Yeah... it wasn't that sort of a game. And besides, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun had Ipsquike looked at Oul and said "Hey, you're evil. Jail time now." We all had fun, and nobody got backstabbed. Besides, using the black/white detect evil solution kind of sucks a lot of the fun of intrigue out of the game IMO.

If the game was meant to be silly or short it is a good idea to allow one of the players to be evil or have different goals than the rest of the party. We played the 2nd ed adventure where you rescue Waukeen from the Abyss. When we encountered a badly beaten, thirsty NPC paladin lost in the forest of snakes she kept insisting while we nursed her that one person in our group was evil; but since she herself had admitted she had failed her given mission and was seeking atonement...and considering this was the abyss...we thought her at best half mad, at worst or a liar. It mattered little in the end because despite our ministrations, she died in our hands.

In the end it was one of our group who had done her in, mixing the potion we gave her with poison, as he was indeed evil and an agent of Mask. We lost valuable information which she was meant to give us, got confused in a thousand different ways, (why are our potions useless here? was she an illusion? Have we been detected? Is helping Waukeen evil in itself?) but it made the game much more realistic (and the DM made sure we weren't screwed because of her death). I would not recommend it for long campaigns, but it is worth it as long as the player has an incentive to remain close with the group.

I guess what i am really trying to say is: a gnomish paladin? Gosh!

Yeah, Ipsquike was an odd guy. And for the sake of all things good in the world don't accidentally call him 'Pipsqueak' :P

This just in...
in our Unnaproachable East campaign, Iseldra, a proud spirit folk ranger, and Khan, a misogynistic Tuigan barbarian, managed to fight within 5 seconds of meeting each other. In their first battle together, while standing side by side against undead, Iseldra managed to roll '1' thrice in a round (her two attacks and her dancing whip), and all her hits landed on the barbarian who, given the amount of friendly fire he had taken, was dead after a slap from his undead foes.
Iseldra was down soon afterwards, as she was left to face the undead alone, so the party had to resurrect them both. Next session, Iseldra and Araghar, a sorcerer, try to hide in shadows to creep past their foes. Iseldra makes it, Araghar remains visible, so Khan throws him a stone to warn him that has not hidden himself well enough. He rolls a natural '1', and the stone hits Iseldra. Iseldra, who until then was one with the night, concludes she is not hidden well enough, rerolls to hide better, fails completely, the enemies see her and she is shot down with flaming arrows.

Khan unwillingly got his revenge, and i am afraid of my dice now.

I don't even want those in the same time zone as me.

I concur.

Then again I have dice that roll above 5 only once or twice a session. And on skill checks I could retry with no consequence. -_-

Natural '1's make for the most fun sequences in both DnD and WoD. I had a vampire game where the player accidentally fed on a changeling after a botched roll, and somehow the whole thing evolved into a romance developed over one on one sessions, a huge storyline involving all the other players, and even players getting together in real life.
On the other hand i have a player who grumbles so badly over dice rolls, i declared i am counting his results in reverse: a 3 is a 17, an 18 is a 2. Now that he is a rogue and the player's lives depend on him regularly, it was the only way out.

An outtake from a friend's game this weekend.

As the dawn breaks after the storm, you can see just how close you came to the coast. A huge mountain seems to glare ominously before you.

"A mountain hey? Maybe we should ask the captain if there's anybody lootable around here."

The captain tells you that's the blackest mountain about. The Steel Maiden herself went in, and never came back.

"On second thought, let's get back to trying to head off the ransom ship."

HAHAHAHA! AWSOME! W000t! The Gamer parody world makes its first peek into a Game. I love it when these things come full circle.
