I've just read reports that Elisabeth Sladen has died today.

What the hell is going on around here?! She could've lasted another twenty years at least! She still had so much more to do!

Not fair...

This is a bit surreal. I kept trying to find evidence this was a hoax of some sort ... I was prepared for the death of Brigadier/Nicholas, but the idea of Elisabeth Sladen just being gone ... is something I need to wrap my head around. I don't know how to tell my little niece.

Condolences to her family and friends who knew her. I hope she was with them at the end.

Bummer.

I wonder if people in the UK were more aware of what was happening with her, health-wise, than we here in the US. It took me off-guard when I saw the headline at the BBC, but I know that's because I don't follow the news abroad as much as I should.

As someone from the UK I didn't know that Elizabeth so, so poorly. This is just awful news. It feels as though a part of my childhood has been lost forever.

I'm stunned at this. I had such a crush on her.

From what I've read she had cancer -- it's come as a shock to a lot of people, apparently she wasn't at all public about it.

Wow, I'll miss her!

I met her once at a convention in Atlanta in the 1980's. She was much like Sarah Jane: spunky, cute, and utterly charming.

Some friends and I went to her autograph signing and we were last in line, so since her panel didn't start for awhile, she sat in the now empty room and chatted with the four of us. Three of us were being typical rude fanboys. We joked and kidded with her and she gave just as good as she got, enjoying the chance to spar instead of answering the same questions over and over. One of us (Mr. Shy & Quiet, now a bigwig at Coca Cola) just stood there and smiled. Finally, she looked at him and said "You're too nice to be hanging out with this lot!" and we all laughed ourselves silly. She was a classy, intelligent woman and we're all the poorer for her departure.

Doctor Who News put all the Doctor's tributes to her on one page. Tom's is shortened but they put a link to his blog so you can read the entire page and see some of his pics he put up.

I was without my internet connection for about 24 hours from yesterday morning, but one of my friends who happened to be over for a Who-viewing gave me the news last night. I'm just crushed...

As ericinwisconsin demonstrated with his anecdote, everything I've ever read about her seems to indicate she was a lot like Sarah Jane, and an all-around lovely person - just a joy to be around. I haven't been really clued in to the Whoniverse for very long myself (only about 3 yrs), but I still feel (as I imagine many fans feel) like I've lost a dear friend.

Too soon. RIP, Lis...

p.s. Thanks for the link, M'reen.

As corny as it sounds, I like to think that she and Courtney and dear Jon Pertwee are together, having a ball.

Did anyone read Tom Baker's tribute? Coming from Baker, it's remarkably sincere. Not knocking Baker (he's my favorite Doctor, just barely edging out Tennant), but he often comes off as vain in interviews and was always reported to have been very rude during his time with the show. (A fact which Baker himself admits to.) In the tribute we see another side of TB. He seemed genuinely saddened by her death and the anecdotes he told showed that he had a lot of respect for her. I was glad to read that.

Not to get too much off topic, but the only person Tom was known for being rude to on a regular basis was Louise Jameson who played Leela. Myths since that time have grown amazingly, but whatever it was about, they're both over that nowadays.

He and Elisabeth Sladen got along famously and in interviews when she was asked who was her favorite Doctor was, she said Tom.

I was pleased he had so many pics of her to include in his blog, it was good to see her looking so wonderful and happy. While her life was short, she seemed to make the most and the best of all her times and made friends everywhere.
