The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who is rapidly approaching, and it's time for the Beeb to come up with something special.

My thought is this: Most of the previous Doctors are dead or quite old. Too old to play the parts again in some "Eleven Doctors" special... So why not do it animated?

That would require the BBC to start fairly soon, since animation takes awhile. Personally, I think some variation of Rich's "Ten Doctors" would make a smashing animation special, but then I'm rather partial to quality and Rich's story and art have that in spades.

I imagine that Tom Baker would be great reprising 4 in animated form, and someone could easily impersonate the first three Doctors and Nicholas Courtney. Plus think of all the Doctors interacting in their prime; something the various specials over the years have NEVER been able to accomplish.

So what do you all think?

If they hired me to write it, it'd be AWESOME!

I gotta admit, I can only invisige the 50th special as an adaptation of Rich's 10 Docs to 11 too, but then again would love to see it in live action, bringing trickiness to the scenarios of finding reliable 1, 2 & 3 replacements and, as 11 described Jo, 'baked' earlier Doctors and companions. Still, I'm open-minded as to what they do: the first 50th anniversary planning meeting took place at the beeb last year, so its gonna be biiiig! :D

Oh, and do a repeat of the Longleat 83' event, I would've loved that!

I'd love to see BBC hire Rich to do an 11 Doctor special - it would be incredible to watch.

I'm puzzled by this thread? Do people really LIKE multi-Doctor stories? They're all just boring, self-indulgent, embarrassing, fanwanky rubbish. (e.g. The Ten Doctors was by far the worst of Rich's DW stories. Thankfully, he's now moved on to telling proper stories instead.)

I'd far rather the anniversary celebrated everything we love about about DW: good, imaginative, creative stories that are told well with a nice mix of comedy and thrills (rather like Rich's later stories) instead of trying to squeeze in as many old faces as possible for the sake of it.

I'm afraid I rather do like multi-Doctor stories as long as they're written WELL ("The Two Doctors" and "Dimensions in Time" sucked). Also as long as they're only done occasionally. Otherwise you fall into the "Homestar Runner" trap in which you rely so much on your own injokes that you quickly become totally inaccessable to new viewers.

As for "The Ten Doctors", whether you enjoyed it or not, the point of it was to be as self-indulgently fanwanky as possible. So it was a success. :D

Glad you're still reading anyway. :)

Yes, there are plenty of us who love multi-Doctor stories. The Ten Doctors happens to be my favorite of BK's stories so far (not that the others have been lacking!). However, BK makes some excellent points about them needing to be infrequent and well-written. That's what makes them special.

As long as they are well written, I'll take any multi-doc story. And if they are well written, well, then there aren't too many of them.

While I agree Dimensions in Time stank, tho it had an interesting idea .. sadly not much of a thread to follow, but an interesting idea - I disagree about the Two Doctors. It's my favorite 6th Doctor story, and the first one where I saw him do likable things, care about a companion more than a guilt reflex, and also the first time I saw the 2nd Doctor really strut his stuff and show off his comic genius. I love the Andregon(sp) Doctor scene, strolling off to town, arm in arm. After that I was more interested in finding 2nd Doctor stories and viewing them.

I imagine a good 11 Doctor story will do the same for a lot of the newer fans, give them something fun about less familiar Doctors and interest them in finding more old eps. The Ten Doctors story certainly did that for a considerable amount of readers, and while it may have started out as indulgent fandom, it quickly grew into an amazing story that gripped the reader and had more depth and twists than many episodes. With lots of indulgent fandom stuff thrown in, but that was just the icing on a well baked dessert.

Fanwank is not necessarily a bad thing. As long as it's GOOD faanwank. The Ten Doctors is an excellent example of this. The various Doctors are there with their companions but it's a GOOD STORY! And that's all fanwank really needs to rise above the genre, much in the same way that The Three Doctors did.
