Rex tried, but did not have enough time to be a jerk. jus say'n.

I thought the story of Angelo was pretty interesting, and carried the ep. They tried to make Jack more "The Doctor" in this ep - did you notice in the 'break in the warehouse' scene the Torchwood music had a bit of that nautical sound that season 3 of Doctor Who had in it? And then the 'run' line, and the way Jack blames his companions for his heartbreak (okay, Angelo really did let him down, but after all those Christ scenes and even Angelo bathing Jack's feet, Angelo thought Jack would forgive him)

Question - giant blood stain on the alley where Jack chose to die again (you'd think the recent experience would have put him off that escape, but I guess the urge to make Angelo feel guilty was higher) - why would Jack put on his nice clean coat first? Shouldn't he have carried it to use to cover up his recently new and bloodied shirt?

Interestingly - I raised the question of when Jack met Angelo in another forum - as he has knowledge that Jack who was stuck on Earth, working for Torchwood at that time didn't have till 2007~ how he was stuck in time, - and the stuck Jack was without his WWII coat till WWII came around again, and we came to the conclusion that he is post 2010 Jack.

Jack got his wrist vortex manipulator working in Stolen Earth/Journey, and he was investigating time traveling aliens (they knew Roosevelt's future) - all suggesting this adventure was post Children of Earth, his time away from Earth, hanging around space bars till he met Alonzo and found a reason to try again. So then he starts adventuring and hanging out on his own, and the adventure with Angelo happens.

Which makes his history with Angelo more recent to Jack than his history with Gwen. He only popped up in this time because some alarm triggered off the search for Torchwood happening, byCIA and other governments agencies.

Ooh! That's an interesting observation. I'll have to think about that more...

On a completely different note, can anyone tell me from where I know the actress who played the woman at the very end? It's driving me nuts that I can't figure it out.

Also, is it just me, or does having actors you know from elsewhere make this series/season a completely different viewing experience for you (anyone), too? (That's actually a question I asked on my blog.) Is this what Doctor Who is like for Brits - "oh yeah, I remember that person from [whatever]"?

I's been a while since you watched Voyager, huh?

That's where you know her from, she had the ridges on her nose then <g>

She's been here and there in sci fi since, but I don't know when the last time I saw her was. It's been a while (I'm sure she was doing other stuff, and raising her kid, but I don't watch much that isn't sci fi/fantasy :smart: )

No, it's not different to me because Doctor Who tends to reuse cast (Gwen of Torchwood was Gwendolyn of Doctor Who in Unquiet Dead, Freyma was Martha 2007+ and 'her cousin' in Doomsday -2006) etc, and most shows I watch from UK TV tend to use the same folks as well. And as I mostly watch science fiction/fantasy, there is certain smaller recycling of the same cast, on a much lower scale both from Hollywood and Canada. (SG1, Sanctuary, a lot of the same actors, even Alpha's has a government no nonsense agent who was no nonsense cop in Dresden Files)
Hollywood tends to want 'name' actors, folks who appeal to fans of the genre, and UK says "We only have so many actors". so it's all the same to me.

I'd say that moving to Starz gave Torchwood a much wider casting pool, but they have obviously enjoyed going for names that had 'previous appeal' for lots of cameos.

I finally figured it out last night, yeah. I was like "OH! DUH!" I think it's the hair that threw me off...

I know there were a couple of reuses in Who, but those were kind of the other way around for me - actors in small roles that switched to prominent ones. Also, I don't watch a lot of TV in general (British or otherwise - though actually, I watch more from Across the Pond than from here at home...), so that probably affects my experience in this case.

So it is just me. Good to know.

Hey, if you really want to experience the recycled actors effect, when you reach Collin Baker as the 6th Doctor in Doctor Who, start watching Blake's 7. between stories. It was a four season series started in 1979 with no budget, so they borrowed props and actors from Doctor Who on regular basis, and vice versa <g>

I've already seen all of Colin Baker's Who stories, but I've never seen Blake's 7 (despite hearing about it a lot). Might have to look into it.

p.s. Wasn't it DS9, rather than Voyager?

*slaps forehead* that was it, DS9! Sorry about that, guess I've sort of merged the two in my memories.

Blake's 7 is a great show. It appeared as mostly fuzz on a PBS channel one Sunday after they stopped showing Doctor Who due to budget cuts (in the 90s) and I happened to catch the first ep. Tho at times I could hardly see most of it, and I had my doubts, listening to the whiny Blake being blackmailed to step outside the rules, that he would make a very interesting main character - I was soon very impressed with what the writers and actors did on their not-even-shoe-string budget.

It was their answer to Star Trek - there was a Federation around with the same symbol that Enterprise crew members had, but it was thousands of years old and gone dark, powerful and paranoid in it's control of it's citizens. Humans were categorized and put in castes of intelligence, treated as slaves in a very feudal way - something barely covered up, but certainly ignored, by the sophisticated and civilized groups in the cities. Going outside the city dome was illegal. Paranoid rantings about government control received little credence by good citizens, who were sure it was at best a few rotten apples in a barrel.

I'm avoiding spoilers, that's all just the background. Enjoy the first ep!
