Things get spoilery from here on out:

Notice at the end, the woman says "He will knock four times" after that "It is returning through the dark" stuff. I know this can be a leap, but in the 'The Sound of Drums', the drums The Master was hearing and using to control was rhythmically 4 beats of 4 notes.

Edit::.

I also love it that after the Doctor learns that Malcolm read all of his files that he asks him about the giant robot from the 4th Doctor's first serial.

Here's some of the theories I have come up with/heard so far...

I personally think this is the return of the unnamed creature from Midnight. I'd actually like that, since I found it to be (strictly IMO) a rather forgettable episode, and certainly unnecissary (sp?) for the show as a whole. I know a lot of people like it, but I never did, I think mostly because it puts humans in a really bad light. However, if that creature is coming back, it would give the episode meaning, and I would like the episode more.

Anyway...some people have speculated that it is the Master, mostly because his drums were always in sets of four *dun-dun-DUN-dun, dun-dun-DUN-dun*, and because there have been reported sightings of Simms at shooting locations.

I also heard some people speculate that the 'it' she talks about is Gallifrey, and the 'he' knocking is 11 somehow. That would be an interesting one, and I for one would LOVE Gallifrey to come back.

However, the theory I support whole-heartedly (mostly because I thought of it independantly, lol) is the mysterious critter from Midnight. I can't wait to find out the truth!

I'm just wondering with the next special being called "The Waters of Mars," if the Ice Warriors will make an appearance?

I liked Midnight as a show, but as a recurring monster like thing, I don't think that would be big enough to bring Donna back because technically she wasn't even a part of it. The Gallifrey theory would be awesome, but a little too early if it were to happen, IMO I think they should bring back Gallifrey at the end of the Doctor's life cycle and grant him more regenerations as a reward for keeping the universe in balance while they were "gone". Seems more in line with what they would do, hide out while there is trouble and pop back in when the dust clears.

As much as I would like to see an Ice Warrior or a few in the new Who, that preview doesn't really hold any justice with that theory. They "look" like mutated humans but could actually be an organism that infects people a la "The Seeds of Doom". Apparently they also like to spray people with their "water", which I'm gonna guess is also what infects people.

EDIT::.

All these black boxes remind me of government released documents of controversial nature.

Maybe it could be something the Ice Warriors left behind to attack people who tried tomb-robbing some of their artifacts, or, harking back to Pyramids of Mars, Osiran tech left from when the Eye of Horus was being protected; The Doctor & SJS did find a few deadly boobytraps.
It would be a bit neglegent of RTD not to mention, in passing, DW's mars-linked adventures.

Did anyone else have a problem with how Planet of the dead ended?

Lady christina is a thief, she stole from the museum, and the doctor is ok with it. He allowed her to get off scott-free, in fact he actually freed her from the police and let her get away in the flying bus. What happened to the days when the doctor had a moral code? Or does it not apply to hot girls?

Aside from that it was an ok episode.

Well, she did help save everybody's life, including his by stopping the Swarm creature from coming up the shaft on her ascent, after she also risked her's by getting the anti-grav generator from the engines. Only one person (and two bugs) died in this adventure, so the Doctor 'owed her one.'

Plus, the Doctor mentioned that he himself had stolen a blue box and wasn't one to throw stones.

Anyway... I'm voting for more aristocratic catburglar companions for the Doctor.

As much as I would love to see Donna back, I don't think the returning and the knocking had anything at all to do with her (now watch me be dead wrong, lol), so I don't understand how she made it into your rebuttal of my Midnight critter argument. So that theory still holds (plus, I'm not letting that one go until I'm proved wrong by cannon, heh heh...).

Anyway, bringing Gallifrey back would make sense now from a certain perspective (tilting your head and squinting slightly), since Moffat is taking over, and a new Doctor, too. Since the Doctor is dying at the end of these specials, he can give his life to bring Gallifrey back, even if it isn't his last regeneration. I don't know...

Is it just me, or do the water-people kinda remind you of the sun-people, from the ep 42? Except now it's water instead of fire. No? Just me then...

I personally found it a very good episode, with all the ordinary people on the bus. Christina was great, thought Malcolm was funny (K1 reference with that), and sorry for those poor old Tritovores. I think it's quite obvious four beats indicate the Master IMO.

And remember water makes ice; perhaps ice warriors are throwing the idea of seed pods out the window and using a new terraforming strategy.

Yes, there are. And I (have) use(d) them. That's why I said, "Hooray for [said ways]!" earlier in the thread. :) I'm very glad I can add my :2cents: to the discussion now.

I took the "he" there to be a less specific Grim Reaper kind of reference... Maybe I just don't have enough imagination. :) I think perhaps I got that feeling from that Radio Times article someone posted earlier... Somehow, connecting that with The Master's mental drums seems a bit of a stretch, but it's plausible enough if Simms has really been on set. Though at that point one has to wonder why the same actor would be playing The Master after he died and refused to regenerate...?

I thought it sounded suspiciously like the early part of Series 4 (or, for that matter, Torchwood...). I mean, a reference to "the dark"? Haven't we heard that a lot lately? Of course, that doesn't make a lick of sense, because then "it" would mean Davros, which would have been "he," so the grammar's all wrong for that scenario. I guess I'm back to having to wait for other good theories. (Not that yours isn't good, Serosis! That might have come out wrong... I just mean that I like to have a bunch to choose from! I would also love to see Gallifrey in the new series, though I agree with kittystitcher that if it happens, it'll be connected to the next regeneration.)

Oh, yes. And I thought the bit where she said his song was ending was really nice. Lovely reference back to Planet of the Ood.

Hate to extremely spoil it but...

http://planetgallifrey.blogspot.com/200 ... 00409.html

Tate, Simm, and Sladen all in one go.
Now my speculation is that Donna is gonna "accidentally" marry (there are also scenes of Tate in a wedding dress) the Master and then the Doctor gets involved and all the who ha that follows.

Gah!!! I had this all typed up, and then the computer kicked me off!!! Ok, trying to reproduce what I had...it was so good, too! :crybaby: *sob, sob*

Ok, I already knew that they were all coming back (even heard rumors of Rose and Martha, not too sure that Rose is possible, but Martha might be fun...) When I said that thing about Donna (As much as I would love to see Donna back, I don't think the returning and the knocking had anything at all to do with her), I meant that I think she's coming back independently of the knocking, that that thing is something else altogether. And thanks for the link, I had seen some screenshots of Luke and I knew the Doctor saved him from the car, but there's just something about a video that makes it all real...

Anyway. I think that the knocking is something else besides the Master, and I think that he's a bit of a red herring, sort of.

What follows is rabid fan speculation, and a crack theory of possibly epic proportions :D

Wait, hear me out! I realize he's coming back for sure, but he is not the thing referenced by the knocking. It's too simple, to obvious. It's got to be some other big scary thing, one the Doctor has faced before to go by Voodoo-Woman's prediction. Wouldn't it be fun if the Doctor and the Master were forced to fight the whatever-it-is together? And then at the last second, the Master turns on the Doctor and kills him! But there are explosions or something, and he's forced to escape before he can find out that he didn't kill the Doctor as well as he'd hoped.
(Doctor:Ah, curse your sudden but inevidible betrayal!
Master: Mine is an evil laugh!
Doctor: Yeah, for all you say that, I really don't hear you laughing all that much...lighten up, wouldja?
Master: *kills ju*
Doctor: *dies D:* *sneakily regenerates*
Master: kthxbi! *scarpers*)

Funnily enough, I recently read a crack!macro that showed the Master marrying Donna, in an attempt to stop her from ever meeting 10...didn't work, though, and now he's got to pay alimony, lol!

Yeah...I'm done now :D
I think I got all the main points I hit in my last attempt at posting, yay!

OK, maybe I'm just being a big cranky-pants here, but shouldn't some of this stuff be in its own "Upcoming Specials" thread instead of one about Planet of the Dead? I've been reading everything inside the spoiler tags - because hey, I've seen PotD now - but have been reading some stuff about upcoming specials I didn't quite want to know yet. (Of course, now that I've read it, I'm doing my own rabid speculating. Silly brain...)
Granted, some of it is relevant, as speculation about what the prophecy means. Maybe they just need some lead-in besides the "spoiler" tag, or even just the note that it's going to be a big spoiler, like this will be a big spoiler about future episodes... That way people like me can decide which spoilers to read and which not to. :\
Or maybe big cranky-pants(es?) like me just need to suck up and deal. :)
