What was everyone's thoughts on the sontarans when they returned last year? I thought the concepts were brilliant, played (and heighted) as the typical sontaran, and General Staal was easilly my second favourite villain of the series after Davros. The one thing that got me was the armour, it just seemed a bit, well, camp. I don't know if it was cos they were trying to end similarities to the Judoon, but all that layered blue didn't really suit them.

Hated the purple. The main Sontaran was great, but his second-in-command was really poor!

I liked them, up until the point where they started clapping and chanting 'son-ta-rah'. It was too much.

Oh, yeah. The "Sontar Ha!" thing was just awful. Give me "Two Doctors" Sontarans over those chants any day!

They were okay - my only quibble was that they didn't have the scene where they lift off the round helmet to reveal the head of the same shape... the joke just wasnt the same with the Stargate style disappearing helmets.
(tho the Sontar-ha was overly silly ...but they are billed as the silliest badies in the universe)

They made up for the helmet moment with the Doctor putting on the gasmask and asking "Are you my mummy?"

Didn't the first Sontaran take off his helmet in "Sontaran Stratagem". I only recall the vanishing business with Kaagh in SJA?

I also want the tongue back :(

I actually found the 'Sontar-Ha' thing quite good, I admit to joining in second viewing. :hehe:

And I think there was a bit in The Poison Sky where Skorr did a Sontaran tounge.

I guess it's good because 1) war-obsessed aliens need a war chant and 2) it's something for the kids, but I hated it because it's reduced another of my favourite villains to having a catchphrase. I know Daleks and Cybermen always had them, but did it really need to be thrown in? The episode would've still worked without "Sontar Ha!"

>And I think there was a bit in The Poison Sky where Skorr did a Sontaran tounge.<

Fair enough, but we need more of it! :D

You could be right about them including it in the first ep, but the vanishing helmet in SJA was very annoying. Why ruin a classic joke?

The only thing I didn't like is their height. Why make them so short? The leader in The Two Doctors was giant from what I remember. And in The Time Warrior! And The Sontaran Experiment! What up with that?

Sontarans are generally seen as short; indeed, Linx and Styre were quite small, and the Third Doctor famouslly described them as "Nasty, Brutish and Short". And to be honest, Sontarans look quite awkward as tall characters IMO.

hm- yeah, esp as a they are all clones, tall ones look out of place. There was some fan speculation about a mistake with growth hormones resulting in a bad batch of tall clones after Two Doctors  , but they are supposed to be around 5 feet or so.

Don't forget the bad batch clone that Styre (Sontaran Experiment) was from, where they they were grown with four fingers and a thumb instead of the usual two.
Also is it Sontarans or Sonteruns (as per Donna)?

Huh. I always got the impression they were quite tall. I guess it's just that dastardly The Two Doctors getting the better of me. My bad.
