My Kobolds are mainly mammalian with scaley patches. When I started playing D&D (Basic when I was a kid), the Kobolds were described as hairless doglike humanoids. And that's what's stuck with me. This proto-dragonkin stuff is all new to me.

Maybe they are like the platypus. A hybrid of 2 distinct species types as well as a mammal that lays eggs.

I am thinking about the Duck Billed Platypus a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Looks like a beaver with a ducks bill and it lays eggs and has milk for its young. The species is still alive and well today.
