I've got to say that I'm impressed. Of all the characters in YAFGC, I never would have expected that so many people would identify so intensely with Jone.

She was an underdog, people always root for the underdog. Especially since she can't speak she never said the wrong thing so we had to wait for her to flat out do something utterly contemptable.

Well, one of the things that surprised me was how easily people seemed to forget that Jone was essentially Evil from the start.

Except that wasn't obvious when she was being bullied by the mayor's son and Mr Sleazy was trying to exploit her. Her being interested in the smithy could be explained by the fact that the smith was the only human that was nice to her.

Now that we know what she's become, we have the luxury of reinterpreting the interest in weaponry as early evidence of her being an evil embryonic mass murderer.

You're right that people were excusing her strange affilnity to torture, but that wasn't "the start" but when had already interpreted her as poor little put-upon Jone.

Jone was Evil at the outset, most likely, not for what she'd done, but for what she was. Remember Protection From Glon? He was pretty nice guy when we first met him, but he still got zapped every time that Cleric cast Protection from Evil when he was around.

Yes but then you have the nature Vs nurture debate. Goria raised her with human mores so she could fit in. And she never displayed anything different than humanity, which was more than what the humans around her did.
Or to speak in game mechanics, half orcs are not always evil. They get to choose.
As for her not speaking... she had a hugely expressive face and she only displayed anger once, when listening to the Sleaze. The rest of her expressions were happiness, curiosity, fear, but never murderous rage or emptiness.

What i find funny though is how people wished for Goria to snap and kill her tormentors. Well, somebody did snap. Was it supposed to be pretty?

Long-time lurker, first time poster. First, a great many thanks to BK for the entertainment, food for thought, fanservice and the friendly attitude. This seems one of the nicer corners of the internet.

Jone is quite young, and one of the most important things for people their age is to find their calling in life. I was happy for her when the blacksmith offered to take her in as an apprentice because in all seriousness Jone seemed too shy and awkward to take over her mother's trade and her excitement was refreshing.
Unfortunately, her true calling turned out to be wholesale slaughter. Worse, the god-enforced min/maxing takes many options to make it an acceptable career choice out of her hands. I wonder whether she's trying to follow Gruumsh's will, lashing out at a world that has nothing to offer to her unless she goes on a rampage, whether she has a grand plan on her own or whether she's totally lost it.

I never understood why so many people seemed to be convinced that she was a *nice* kid - my sympathy for her had other reasons. Still, since her attack on Goria I don't really know what to make of her.
I'm still hoping she has the ability and inclination to stick it to Gruumsh somehow but... I really don't know what goes on in her head. I still find her story compelling and am eagerly following it.

I don't think anyone was expectingwither of them to snap this far. I'll bet most still don't hold her little hometown rampage against Jone. But there's a big difference between what we see as justified vengence and crazy murder spree, usually the line is drawn where you stop.

Welcome, and you're welcome! Drop on down to the 'Introduce Yourself' thread in Tangency when you get a chance.

On topic, note that my reactions to Jone were heavily coloured by knowing where BK was going with the storyline, so so can't take me as an example of attitude changes. (As a side note, remember the WorldCon photos with Heather Dale reacting to sketchbook spoilers? This is the storyline Rich was showing her. I'll buy a beer at a con for the person who can figure out why he'd be showing her this storyline in particular. ;) )

Easy, Lady Heather of the Dale will be making an appearance.

Keep the beer, it messes with my blood pressure meds.

Not as far as I know! That *would* be a bit of a cop-out answer, wouldn't it?

Well, my other answer was that she's composing an original ballad based on the story arc, and that seemed even more blindingly obvious, O My Queen.

Could it be that Heather Dale has an oh-so-nifty song called "Joan"?

Hm... given the hint she gave, DM owns zerotkatama a lemonade.
Spiked, maybe.

Back to Jone though... i agree with Draconi's reasoning, but i am just pointing that 'snapping' does not come with limits. You do not snap up to the point where it is convenient, restore justice and then go for tea, or wear a nifty cape and play Batman. Jone was the recipient of too much evil, and she became damaged goods. Now she is returning the favor to the world. I do not like what she does, but madness is rarely pretty.
