Ya know, for a supposedly all-seeing & and all-knowing creature just short of being a demigod, Beholder King isn't too bright :? That said, I find Lewie's grumbling rather amusing.

Bright? No. Completely insane? Signs point to 'yes'.

Well, really, who else would they send down there when the Beholder King is this ticked off? ^^ Hee hee. It's actually rather nice to finally see some of what he's capable of!

The insanity of the Beholder king does not mean that he is dumb. He may be just applying his intelligence the wrong way. However, he supposedly can see the future (or maybe even is omniscient?), and that's why the fact that Yapp managed to convince him that the queens insulted him is rather strange. The only explanation I can think of is that Beholder king is extremely stupid, which is unlikely too.

Beholders are typically vain.

Read back to the Rise of Lewie part of Lich of the Rings. The King can occasionally see pieces of the future==not all of it.

Unlike our Beholder King, who sees all and knows all. :D

Also keep in mind that as Beholders are Aberrations they're not native to the material plane at all, i believe at some point they were revealed to have been the offspring of a godlike monstrosity from the Far Realm that snuck in somehow way back during the time of creation.

The point i'm trying to get at here is whatever the hell goes on inside a Beholder's mind does not even remotely resemble anything that goes on inside any real creature's mind as they are fundamentally alien not just to the world but to the entire plane of existence itself.

Bob and the Beholder King together? I remember that the BK stated Bob would succeed him as King, and that he (BK) would kill Bob if ever he saw him before that time.

And what have the other dungeon inhabitants done in the meantime? I'm primarily interested in seeing how the harpies have reacted to that powerplay. (Who am I kidding - I just like the harpies, period.)

The King knows a Beholder named Bob will one day succeed him; he does not know what this Bob looks like, and he cut off Bob before he could introduce himself.

So the King gets general glimpses of the future, not specific details, and he does not seem to feel that the future is immutable; he did say he would kill his successor if he met him before the appointed time of succession, if I recall correctly.
And hey, it may not even be 'our' Bob Beholder who gets the job. Remember that his baby brother has the exact same name, and he's already powerful enough to knock out an adult of his own species.

So the 'Great Mother', the race goddess of the Beholder race, could be from the Far Realms originally? Makes sense when you consider the nature of her Abyssal layer. Creepy place.

I don't think Wizards ever published anything that officially confirmed the Great Mother's origins, but a few hints are dropped that she's probably some kind of protean Far Realm Elder God thing.

Is there some significance between the Beholders with their eyes on stalks (like the emissary) versus the ones embedded in the orb (like BK)?
Is it just age, or is there something else?

It may be different beholder breeds, as they are quite mutable.

Well seeing as the Beholder King is the only Beholder seen thus far who has eyes not on stalks (as far as i remember, i could be wrong) it's probably either the result of age or simply variant mutation. Every individual Beholder is unique and even amongst true Beholders there's quite a lot of physical disparity.

Alternately Rich just didn't want to draw 8+ eyestalks waving around all the time.

Whatever the reason is for those eyes not to be on eyestalks, they have very poor angles of vision in directions other than up and therefore are nearly useless.
