"Royal", which is a multi-pun, since Neph is of royal blood, is thought to be aiming for the throne and the term is used (at least over here) for anything big, bloated and uncomfortable.

She's the queen's niece, and apparently in the line of succession. Ergo, she's of royal blood.

Oooh, i did not remember the niece part. Well, it makes Mah'ri's claims pretty well founded then. Even true.

Nephilia is queen's niece. Queen looks old (although Anancy stated that she's still not too old) and has no direct heir. I guess that Nephilia was expected to become the queen in the not very distant future. Why need a coup?

I don't think it's 'old' so much as 'ugly'. At a mere 83, the queen is probably about what we would consider college years.

They don't, or at least I don't think so. Mahr'i was lying. Nephilia is the natural choice, and her mother just sucked up to Lolth to ensure that she would be chosen. The priestesses don't need to cause a civil war that would disrupt their society, only a little patience.

I don't think Anancy would believe in such an obvious lie. But there still exists a possible explanation -- the queen is expected to libe much longer and Nephilia is too impatient (maybe in Mah'ri's accusations only).

Mahr'i used slow attrition to undermine Anancy's trust (such as it was) in Nephilia, and set up the right opportunity to crack it completely, i.e., the Scorpii and Nephilia lapping up all the égards wafted her way.
