Actually they're scimitars. If they were engaged in piratical activity and if they were outlaws, they'd be corsairs.

see thats the problem here! and then there is bukaneers too etc etc! its just so confusing, so anyone with a ship and clearly not a mere trader is a pirate!
just about as any undead with some rotting flesh is a zombie for most, even if they are actually ghouls :p

Bucaneers refers to the sailors who also hunted boar on the island of Hispanola, if that helps. Gotta be working the Caribbean for that.
