 Post subject: At what point do Beholders grow extra eyes?

I've always wondered about this. Is there a threshold of age/power when Beholders sprout >4 eyes, or is it random?

Wikipedia states that beholders mutate very often, and there are lots of beholder subspecies. They all have different features and the number of eyes varies between subspecies too.
