For those unfamiliar with the story, Raymond was a local fixture of the queer community. He was beaten to death on April 17th, outside a local bar, as he tried to intervene in a gay-bashing. His killer has been arrested and is being tried for second-degree murder, though there are a long series of issues coming into play with the trial prep. Andre Denny, the accused, is deeply mentally ill and had been AWOL from the local psychiatric hospital after an unsupervised leave.
Yesterday was the
International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, and the Halifax rally was also partially a second vigil/memorial for Raymond, and a reclamation of the downtown area as a safe space.
