Great now I want Greek food. The problem is to get any decent Greek I have to travel an hour to Orlando.

Mincemeat is perhaps the most misunderstood delicacy, mostly b/c it involves zero meat. I'm actually kinda surprised the Pecan is the favorite here. Most people go straight for Chocolate Cream. On a related note, how does one classify Cheesecake? It's called a cake yes, but is more akin to pie in form and composition. Much as I love Peach for being the best all-around pie, a good slice of Cheesecake makes for a wonderful snack :eat:

Unfortunately, maark, i cannot e-mail you some food, though being Greek-Cypriot i love stuffing people with delicacies (not in a cannibalistic way, oK?).

DM, donair (doner) is the turkish word for a foodstuff we are also very fond of. We call it gyros though, it is roast meat (usually pork, chicken is popular too now) and as unhealthy as it gets. Students in Greece literally live on gyros during their first year :D .

Heh - and here I thought it was a local fake-out food. I'd never heard of donairs before moving to Nova Scotia, though I have seen gyros - here, they have this really dubious-looking cone of meat that they slice into a pita and cover with sweet sauce. It's highly suspect! I asked once what was in it (oh, innocence...) and the following conversation took place...

Me: "so what kind of meat is in a donair?"

Shopkeep, looking at me like I'm dumb: "Donair meat."

Me: "Yes, but what kind of meat? Chicken? Lamb?"

Shopkeep: "... donair meat."

Me: "... a donair isn't an animal. What kind of animal was this, when it was alive?"

Shopkeep, immensely frustrated with me: "It's donair meat. Are you buying one or not?"

Me: "... :undecided: ... not."

A translation for the Americans - what you call Kraft Mac & Cheese is called "Kraft Dinner" up here. Same blue box, same safety-orange radioactive "cheez," different name.

And yes, I lived on KD + cottage cheese and ramen + egg for a few months in there. :D

I thought as much, but I really wasn't sure. I was just going to say ramen, but the mac and cheese wanted to come out and play too, apparently. :D I personally lived on pasta, beef jerky, sweets and buffets.

It is funny how many people have no idea what is in the donair they sell. if you ask here they just say its Gyro meat or loaf. The really bad part is that people tend not to know what is in anything they sell or eat for that mater. Also I have been told that in the US the most popular donair meat is a lamb/beef mixture.

I haven't heard of donair before, but I've often come across gyro. I've always assumed gyro was lamb. I probably ought to be a bit more discerning...

My favorite application will forever be... (wait for it!) gyro pizza.

Hell I am assuming (yes, I know that assuming is not a good thing) that donair is the Turkish word for Gyro Loaf.

And I have had Gyro pizza. A little shop in South Florida had it and many other special pies

(I always figured that this forum would be good for my love of sociology)

You're right - that's one that didn't make the list, either: pizza pie! :D

Gyro pizza was actually the specialty of two pizza places in the small town where I went to college. The story goes that Greek brothers started one, and after some shenanigans and a falling out, they each ended up owning one... Since there were two colleges, they both stayed in business.

Hmmm... How to arrange a trip back there, now? *drools at the thought*

Oh God. I apologize on behalf of the Greek Nation :o .
Gyro Pizza sounds like assisted suicide to me.

It is but the place I went to only used the meat not the tzatziki sauce or vegetables so it was not as bad as it sounds. Besides it is not like the Greek nation didnt come up with the wonderful and non hangover forming Ouzo.

I thought gyro was lamb. Whatever it is, it's good if made right. (I have a few Greek restaurants near me)
