...and now, for a slightly more in-depth post.
- Loved HHGttG in print; haven't seen the movie, and don't intend to, so no comment on that front.
- Enjoyed the new Trek movie for what it was; looking forward to more.
- Cybus Cybermen are creepy yet flawed, just like a lot of the baddies from both Classic and New; I like 'em.
As for the actual topic of the thread, the
FOX movie had its ups and downs, but was
overall a win.

It's when people who hate the tv movie turn around and praise the new series, when the new series makes the same mistakes and far worse ones....that is what drives me up a wall.
So, um... What do you do with someone like me who likes 'em both?
I can see some of the flaws in both the Movie (by the end, Roberts' Master was over-the-top for my tastes; half-human comment is best ignored) and New Who (overuse of Daleks; everybody's got a catchphrase now; oy! with the Slitheen already). ...and I totally understand Sixislove's point about not caring for things that are wildly popular simply because they're wildly popular, too. (For example, I've sworn never ever ever to read
The Hobbit because a childhood friend of mine kept pushing it on me (we were, like, eight) as the best book ever written.)
However, I find both the Movie and New Who (as well as Classic)
thoroughly enjoyable. I
like the romance angle. *ducks incoming rotten tomatoes* Sure, Eight's choice of paramour could have been better, but I'm willing to overlook it. Rose was my first companion, so I fell in love with the Doctor right along with her. I interpret his extreme attachment to her as the need to cling to the ones he has left, now that his home and his entire people have been (nominally) utterly destroyed (someone else already said that in this thread, but that's been my interpretation since I first started reading objections to her and their relationship).
So, yeah. There are flaws. But it's still good fun. ...and pretty much the best thing I can get on tv (although
So You Think You Can Dance is pretty high up there

).
