I heard the TARDIS exterior would be changed back to Hartnell-era specs.

I also think Moffat is likely to go for a more classic-series white style interior, though perhaps that concept would be updated and more sleek.

I can actually picture that. That would be really awesome, actually. ><

I've seen a lot but not all of the Classic episodes, so I'm not sure about this - did they ever (always/never?) give an explanation for a change in interior? (I get the impression there wasn't ever one except for the "alternate" wood-paneled control room during Four's era.)

I ask because it feels to me like a change from the current interior to something reminiscent of One's era would be drastic enough to warrant at least a toss-off comment... ("I've got a new lease on life! Let's redecorate!")

So here's my little challenge to all of you (who are probably more creative than I anyway):

  • Describe the new interior you envision (either what you wish it would be or what you predict it will some day be).
  • Give the dialogue that will explain the change.

I can't wait to see what everybody comes up with!

At the beginning of "The Five Doctors" which introduced the digital console with the monitors on it, it is apparent that the Doctor has been doing some remodling. He wipes down the console and Tegan seems impressed, though skeptical that the change will improve his ability to navigate.

Excellent! I've only seen that once, so missed that nuance. Thanks, Rich.

Just a small addition to that discussion: he had to rebuild the console because the old one blew up in Enlightenment.
I have no idea how he flew it to 13th century England for The King's Demons, or from there to the Eye of Orion.
(I've had a chance to revisit some Classic Who serials since the early 90s, but TKD is not one of them.)

Edit: I could be wrong about that. Enlightenment and Resurrection of the Daleks are both serials I have been able to revisit. It may have blown up in Resurrection. My memory's a little fuzzy.
Anyway, it blew up at some point not long before The Five Doctors.

Beholder King, Just a Wanderer: I seem to recall the Cybermen somehow getting around the temporal grace circuits and shooting the console with one of their guns?

MRFranklin:

As I said, what I think they'll do is an updated sleeker version of the classic white.

What I would do is a big round console room with a mostly black console, white walls, and blue underlighting (with blue light from the roundels in the walls and also from the rotor). The rotor would, as is the case now, extend into the ceiling, but also, the console would be attached to the rotor and nothing else. No arches, no direct contact with the floor. And show some more of the TARDIS, fer crying out loud! And at least once, show us a glimpse of those alien, incomprehensible Gallifreyan engines!

But I'd be thrilled to get the TVM console back, too. Basically anything would be better than what we currently have.

I think Time Crash's "desktop theme" line covers it fairly well.

How do you think the change would be "explained"?

Like I said, I think the line from Time Crash about the "Desktop Theme" covers it pretty well.

I hate that, myself. How about "internal restructuring circuit" to go along with the rest of the TARDIS terminology?

The 1980 Doctor Who annual had a great little story ("Sweet Flower of Uthe") where the TARDIS has landed and actually kicked the Doctor and Romana out so that it can do some internal maintenance. If one were to adopt this as part of the mythology, maybe it just happens randomly once in a while and the Doctor just takes what he gets?

I like that idea. :) Kind of like the way he arrives at a destination... ;)

Just a reminder that while any speculation is welcome, any spoiler info about changes to the interior from unaired eps [Ex "I heard ________________"] should be put in spoiler format so that the spoiler phobes can continue to read the thread.
