I picked up a couple of the Classic Who books at an exhibition a few days ago, and have enjoyed them. What do you guys think of the old books?

I liked "Amorality Tale" with Three, and I'm half way through "Coldheart" with Eight. One thing I don't get: who exactly is Compassion, and why is she half-human(oid), half-Tardis?

I don't know what series I have; the back of one book has lists of "Eighth Doctor" and "Past Doctor" books, but it doesn't say which Doctor for those books; does anyone know of good Third, Fourth, and maybe Second books?

For details, check out the following (all details are from the Tardis Wikia site)...

Past Doctor Adventures (PDA) http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/BBC_Past_Doctor_Adventures (with a list of each Doctor participating)
Eighth Doctor Adventures (EDA) http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/BBC_Eighth ... Adventures (with list of books Compassion appeared in)
Compassion http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Compassion (complete biography - **contains story spoilers**)

The EDA adventures were produced in long story arcs over a number of books, as opposed to misc Doctor stories with PDA. I gave up during the time D8 got stuck on Earth with amnesia (again!). They tended to get a bit repetitive IMO. Some stories were completely bat-$#!t crazy, too (Scarlet Empress and Beltempest spring to mind). Again I'll state IMO. What I liked, others will hate, vice versa. I did like the early Sam Jones stories and when Fitz turned up (but Fitz's character got screwed up with the big Faction Paradox storyline :( ) A number of the authors have written audio plays for Big Finish since.

The Virgin DW books weren't too bad either, although they tended to be a bit Doctor-lite, just focusing on the companions. And you probably know about Looms by now.

Man, I loves me those books. The Eighth Doctor ones more than the Past Doctor ones, as the former were allowed to carve a path in a new direction while the latter were stranded in an apparently adult "too hot for TV!" state that jarred with my perceptions of the characters.
