Maybe she doesn't speak because living with a mother that overprotective and paranoid (maybe justifiably so, but still) had made her too shy and afraid to?

Jone has not spoken to the Blacksmith, her friend or to her Mother asking her a direct question. She flexed for the Smith to show she was strong enough to help him and he sent her back with a verbal message for her Mother so I think she can speak but doesn't very often. Curiouser and curiouser.

Maybe she can write, and the message is meant to be delivered that way. Which given her social class and species would be pretty odd in and of itself...

It's also possible that she communicates with her mom via sign language or something.

Maybe she was abused into silence.

Or she damaged something biting through balks of firewood.

Oh, and BK? Jone of Orc~Joan of Arc, aka Jeanne d'Arc, actually Jehane la Pucelle.

So does she talk to the angels and fairies and lead a holy war?

Well, since the historical Jehane deserted the realm of her feudal masters (Burgundy) to aid the prince of another realm secure his claim on the throne (specifically making the Dauphin Charles the...VIII, I think), Jone would in this case be leaving the human lands to help Glon become King after Maula is dead and her former liege and his allies were halfway to conquering the Black Mountain.

I'm hoping BK is just riffing, rather than actually using the play book. Although betraying your rescuer to her enemies to be raped, tortured and publicly executed would make a little more sense coming from orcs.

I would say she is a half orc half human given that her mother goes on about distrusting humans and orcs alike. Given that she is strong she could probably be seen in a martial role but the historic Jeanne was also a strategist. Jone does not seem like a leader. Of course, character development and all that, you never know what is in store for her.

She's got foil/female counterpart/possible romantic interest to Glon written all over her .

True but as Lith pointed out, maybe this is the reason we will not see them together for a long time: too predictable.
On the other hand, it would take a lot to transform Jone to someone who could play the part of foil or romantic interest. Unless she hides a secret, like living a double life under the Mountain.
