It's not all that ambiguous - tho nothing to stop us dedicated fans from speculating <g>- I believe the quote above is missing the word "like" from what Rassilon said.

"The vote is taken. Only two stand against and will stand as monument to their shame, [like] the weeping angels of old."

He lowered his voice so much as to make it near inaudible, but there was a word there and the word like is the one my brain insists it heard the first two times. Now that I go back it seems just a sound <g> but 'like' makes the most sense to me.

I just thought he was inhaling loudly. It takes alot of breath control to be a ham...*cough* dramatic...I mean dramatic. :P I only say that because his lips didn't seem to move like he was speaking at that point. *shrug*

I guess we'll have to wait till they're released on disc, and read the captions! :wink:

U.S. release date for "The Complete Specials" is February 2, 2010. A month isn't bad lag! I'm sure we'll all still be debating various aspects for months yet anyway... :wink:

I really didnt want to wait till Feb to find out so I found the subtitles online and looked it up :mrgreen:

Quote:
526
00:36:46,240 --> 00:36:47,680
The vote is taken.

527
00:36:47,680 --> 00:36:49,840
Only two stand against.

528
00:36:49,840 --> 00:36:52,760
And will stand as monument
to their shame,

529
00:36:52,760 --> 00:36:55,760
like the Weeping Angels of old.

530

And now we know it wasnt just my dramatic intuition interpreting that. :mrgreen: Besides with the 'of old' at the end there, he was clearly making a reference/comparison of them to something else, rather than saying he was making them into creatures to set loose in the shortly to be destroyed universe.

Having my cake and eating it too <g> Perfect

Tho I wouldnt have gone to the trouble if Lassarai hadn't put up the first quote and then M R Franklin brought up the subtitles idea :happy:

Tho the mystery woman mystery isn't so easily solved ....or said repeatedly with a straight face.

I think the cast list said it was the dr's mother. Apparently most people-who never saw any classic series thought so too. And RTD does like to keep things understandable for the mainstream watchers. Personally i thought the woman was Romanna or Susan. Also Io9, a website i read came up with some nice reasoning for that.

Susan-"i was lost so long ago" susan was left on post apocalyptic earth by her grandfather. Also when wilf asks who she is the doctor looks at wilf and donna, showing the common relationship of grandfather and grandaughter.

Romana-"i was lost so long ago" means her time in e-space. And again when wilf asks about her the doctor looks at Donna cause they were both his companions.

Its probably the dr's mom but personally i like the theories and shall be adding them to my "personal canon"
The article also gives a theory for Rassilon who i was having a WTF moment over. Question, wasnt there a theory that Romana was lord president in the time war? Or was that just a trippy dream i had?

I had come up with both of those supporting arguments already myself (with the exception of the Romana-Donna connection), so I'm glad to see I'm on the same wavelength as other folks. :)

I don't know for sure about that one, as I don't read much besides here :D but I thought there was some Eighth Doctor stuff where Romana was Lord President...

Romana came back from E-Space and became President in one of the Virgin New Adventures novels (one of the ones that I didn't read). I haven't read many of the BBC Eighth Doctor novels, but I was under the impression that she stayed President during those.
This is all moot as far as the show is concerned, as they don't consider the novels to be canon.

I think we can knock the 'Doctor's mother' right out of the ballpark - the Doctor's family is all presumed dead before he began his travels- just he and his granddaughter Susan. Now they might still be alive, but frankly that's destroying all the drama of the classic series -which while not so hung up on the lonely Doctor motif, did in fact show, from time to time, that he was a lonely man who missed his lost family and dealt with it by never thinking about them. Susan was the only one alive, and now his daughter Jenny.

(I mean, if his mother was alive, you'd think she'd have made an appearence or three every time her son was named President of Gallifrey :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :frogwink: )
Susan seems most likely - she looked like Susan. Romana, while possible, seems unlikely as she was never the seer type, but the practical clever type. I even thought Romana might be the woman killed in the chamber, but dismissed that as well. If they'd killed off someone as important as Romana, she'd have been named. "Thank you for your opinion, Ex-President Romana!"
That's the same reason I dismiss the council consisting of the immortality seeking coffin people- ex-President Borusa would have been named as the one presenting the seer's Doctor/Master prophecy. (It was just his style to point out such a way to escape death, when others were silent).

Susan was a bit of seer in youth, and I can see her being recalled to fight in the war as it churned on, with her experience driving daleks off 21st century Earth and relationship to the Doctor flagging her to their attention as it dragged on.

Alternately there's just Leela and Ace, who presumably lived their lives on Gallifrey for some time. Tho I have a feeling Gallifrey, as it corrupted itself, may have expelled aliens or sent two such fighters off to deal with battles far away and never recalled them back. They certainly wouldnt have been given a vote tho, as aliens, even if somehow they were back on the doomed planet.

Which makes me wonder if the other dissenter was Andred <g>, but he seemed to be a high council member. Only the woman was dressed differently, no gold on her gown. I hope his identity comes up too, when the Doctor's next story reveals who she was.
