Nevertheless I never said Kurassa was good or nice.
He may have his interests, he may be selfish, etc.
I just think he may be not cruel enough to be considered as genuinely evil.
So far I didn't see him to smirk maliciously underhand or go "bwahaha!"
He fights with flies and sometimes looks not very bright... He often seems to be at a loss.

let me answer from the end

1. He treed the Caliph... -- now, that's an argument. A strong one, indeed. It's really an evil deed. But so far it's only our presumption, not a direct proof, we didn't see him doing it.
And with Rich's inventivness and aptiness to twist typical (archetypical) plots we can well expect the culprit is somebody else...
