Hello mark. I hope you are mistaken... though you did make me wonder where Gilda is.

Hey all,

This is my first post on these forums and although I've been reading the YAFGC for about 4 months, I just discovered these forums last week!!!

In fact, Lolth is probably only feeling safe because she has not come across the most dreaded pirate of the seas, and true heir to the throne, Captain Fang. Tell me this isn't skill; http://yafgc.shipsinker.com/index.php?strip_id=259, but the important part of my post is asking if anyone else thinks hes the perfect example of the fool in tarot.

"The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world. The sun shining behind him represents the divine nature of the Fool's wisdom and exuberance, holy madness or 'crazy wisdom'. On his back are all the possessions he might need. In his hand there is a flower, showing his appreciation of beauty. He is frequently accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes as the call of the "real world", nipping at his heels and distracting him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is standing on a precipice, apparently about to step off."

Fool's description taken from wikipedia.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum! :D
Nice work, i wonder if any other characters fit so well to the tarot cards. And Morgana's image of the good Captain riding a wargi has been corrected now. Now we know the Wargi just follows him around. Much less mental scarring. :cloud9:

Congratulation Morgana, you coined a new euphemism

Thanks Morgana, i realised i needed a new insult after spending half my weekend cussing like a sailor and ran out of things to say*. Needless to say i was horrified. But i prefer biting sarcasm and obscure references to swearing any day, So "Piece of....Kobold" works great.

*I cut my arm while fencing. Whenever anyone asks how i hurt my arm and i reply a sword, they back away veeery slowly.

Lol there isn't anything not to like on Fang; he does whatever he wants and say whatever he wants ALL THE TIME. That guy is the spirit of freedom itself, he can take a stroll on the beach in the midst of a battle. Become enamored of an acorn while taking part in a competition to become king (some might even imply, reasonably, that he only lost because he cared more about the acorn than the competition).

And last what kind of man can be happier than one that when faced with 3 wishes, wishes that his ship become a giant banana!! That shows he really already has everything he needs with him, as per the fool's tarot description.

You are welcome, SecondHeartbeat. Keep practising, as you never know when Fang will sail up to Scotland in his banana sheep and duel you to an annoyance-induced death.

As for Illuien's depiction of Fang as a drunken master, enlightened mad guru, all i have to say is STOP FORCING ME TO APPRECIATE HIM! He sucks :crybaby: .

Aaaaand... The Fang came back,
The very next day,
The Fang came back,
They thought he was a goner,
But the Fang came back,
He just wouldn't stay away...

I would be unsurprised to learn that Fang is the single most difficult character to write in all of YAFGC. The line between creating dialog that sounds whimsically (or simply insanely) nonsensical and just plain idiotic is a tough one to navigate, and every time I see the good Captain, I always find myself wondering if this is going to be the time where he goes from comical to just... off.

So far. So good.

Bravo.

Plus, judging from his crew, he is contagious.

You're absolutely right.
Every line he says has to fit two catagories:
a) It has to be completely unrelated to what's going in the strip.
b) It has to *not* follow on from anything he's said previously. Ever.

As the comic goes on, this gets harder and harder to do. And merchandising ideas! Yeesh! It's really hard to make a line sound like it has nothing to do with anything out of context.

Merchandising ideas?

How about a Tickle-Me-Fang doll?

A non-sequiteur for all occasions.

Hmm, I suppose you could tweak a Markhov Generator and slap a label of "Offical Fang Transation service" - though 'google translate' usually gives the same effect (My Hovercraft is full of eels!).

Or just use some of the text and spelling from typical spammers.

No, it's more complicated than that. Many of his lines are quotes that are familiar to me, and many of them are not. Sometimes he'll sing lines from actual songs, sometimes he's referring to an obscure movie or a personal in-joke.
