He's crying. o_o Arachne never did anything nice for him that I can recall, Mahr'i is giving him everything he ever wanted, and he - is - crying. What the Abyss?

Basically, Wolf has a dilemma. Barring any kind of interruptions or sudden apperances of destructive beings, there's only two ways this can play out for him:

Anger Mahr'i by not killing Arachne = Lose everything he's gained so far, including his love, and spend the rest of his hopefully short life being tortured and broken

Anger Lloth by killing Arachne = Lose everything he's gained so far, including his love, and spend the rest of his life AND afterlife being tortured and broken...

Yeah. To be honest, I'd be a bit sad if I was him, too.

To me it seems like he has decided. I do not know what his decision is -kill Arachne or turn around and kill Mah'ri- but he is definitely getting reconciled to loosing something important.

Well, we do not always choose who is our friend or who we fall for. Common sense and emotions do not always go hand in hand. If Arachne is a friend of his, being ordered to take her head is not going to be easy.

By the way, this is a brand new side of Wolf, isn't it?

Yes, indeed...
He never showed any open and strong emotion, even when 'Bith had stripped him of his acquired ranks and status and made him a slave...

Perhaps they are brother and sister?

Love? What's all this love crap got to do with anything?

I really want to know more about the Order of the Spider. Wolf seems to care about it a lot - possibly more than his loyalty to the Queen, despite what all she's promised him (or at least enough to make him question). I think Archane's ties there may be more important than his personal feelings towards her.

However I also wonder what Arachne is up to, since Lolth seems to think the war is cool. Unless Lolth is just being as shortsighted as everyone else? Guess we'll see :3

Is anyone else getting a "Snow White" vibe from this?

Evil queen sending the royal huntsman to kill the fair maiden, huntsman having qualms... hard not to see parallels between that and what we've got here.

Of course there are important differences, like "evil queen" being the Drow beau ideal of a ruler, and Arachne being anything but a helpless innocent... I'm getting the sense that Rich is deliberately riffing on that fairy tale, though, and am looking forward to seeing just how he goes about subverting it.

Well, if we're talking fairytales, it also has a splash of Red Riding Hood. Sittica (who I'm sure we all still remember from when she was very little) went to see the great-grandmother of all Drow (Lolth), and the big bad Wolf came after her - in time. Of course by that point, it's all been jumbled up.
