I got pointed to a discussion on another board, where apparently the belief is that Arachne is plot-untouchable because she's a former character of mine. I don't have an account there and I'm not going to get one just to be pedantic, but I do wonder if that's a common belief...

So just for the record: Arachne's not mine. She's entirely a creation of Rich's, and I'm not even all that fond of her. I'm more of a Cadugan and Adwen fangirl. (No, not together.)

Former characters of mine that have appeared in the strip are:

- Vanessa, the Calipha of Umbril (D&D; she was just a priestess when I played her)
- Sidonie, the bimbo falconer (Pendragon)
- Giovanna the pirate (Pirates!)
- Cassandra of the Book, who survived the face-off with Chimera (D&D)

(And Calliope the dancing-girl-turned-Senator's-wife, from House of Paulus.)

And I haven't asked for plot immunity for any of them. The only favour I think I've ever asked for (and Rich was free to say no) was for Sid to wind up happy in love, eventually. She didn't get to marry her prince in-game, so I put my foot down about getting to marry for love in-comic.

And that's it.

/irritated, because being the GM's girlfriend/wife usually just means getting shat on *more* than the rest of the group...

Actually, I think it says something that all three of the DM-crew that appeared in more than one strip are beautiful, capable and more than able to crush someone who attacks them.

I just tried to keep them true to character. DM gets credit for all that.

I've included many of what one might call "other people's charactes" in YAFGC. This includes:

-RPG PCs and NPCs (DM's list above, the crew of the 'Celestial Raven' and all the people who showed up to visit the Halfling pirate Pado, the 'Al Qadim' party that get eaten by Turg just before he meets the Sphynx, Adwen the Cruel, Sir Aeden, Calliope, Midna and Saphia in "House of Paulus", and others)

-SCA personae or LARP characters (Freya, Baron Conrad and Cairn MacAllister, Kazumi the Royal Drow Poisoner)

-Variations of SCA personae (Jewel the Pocket Bard, Lady Marion of Heatherdale)

-Actual people (Thomas the Bard, Frank)

-Variations of actual people (Ben)

-Parodies of celebrities (The Ghosthunters, the American Idol judges)

-Characters from movies (Giacomo the Fool, most of the Barbarians)

-etc.

For the record, I have a 'code' for using other peoples' characters in my comics. I don't do gratuitous nudity or sex scenes with them, kill them off or make them act deliberately out of character. Unless I have (a)express permission or instructions, or (b) it's inherently part of the character (I'm amazed I managed to do a whole "House of Paulus" story WITHOUT getting Saphia into a gratuitous nude or sex scene to be honest)

So all this to say that if you or your favorite character find yourself appearing in a YAFGC comic, rest assured that I won't be deliberately doing anything creepy with you.

plot immunity is always a thing... killing someone for good is never easy, and often its just wasting a lot of good future plots with that character.

I think that a story this long must have some character immunity to remain continuous and funny. For example, if Bob would be killed, say, in strip 2139, it would be legit, but would it be good?
As a side note, character immunity did not save baron Owen and Charlotte, despite them being quite important characters.

Considering they're both still around (or at least something in Charlotte's body crawled out of the rubble), that's not really making your point.

Here you are more prominent examples: Jone and Taidor.

I must say that i find the balance quite convincing: characters stick around for long so they can be developed and help us identify with them and so on, but they are not indestructible, as so many examples have shown, so the storylines involving danger do keep you on your toes.
