We have always been a male dominated troupe (12 males, three females) but i have played with all female parties too. Generally i see more boys than girls taking the game seriously (reading the books and thinking about the character as opposed to just showing up). Still i do not think it is a male oriented game (bikini chainmails aside). It can be that like attracts like: if all you see inside a hobby store is guys, you tend to think of it as a guy game.

I'm thinking back over my experiences in gaming (mind you, I never experienced an RPG of any sort until 1993), and the only genre where I noticed any sort of real gender bias was the infernal/World of Darkness. And there, I tended to find many more women than men, for one of two reasons: 1) If you were a super(natural critter), gender didn't matter so much as what powers your particular beastie had (thus nullifying any perceived weakness to the sex), or 2) if you were human, you made more attractive bait for the male supers.

But in everything else I've dabbled in (PBeM or mu*, Star Trek, D&D, Marvel Comics, Star Wars, Rifts), I've really found there to be a pretty good balance in player-gender. Sure, you get a few boys-playing-girls, but just as often, I see girls-playing-boys (myself, on occasion, playing the son of one of Dusty's and my characters). And that's made things more entertaining for me at times!

I think World of Darkness attracts more females because of it's atmosphere, too. Especially Vampire.

<-- currently dating a lady who plays. She doesn't play a lot, but when asked she would probably say yes to joining in on any geeking-out session

its actually awesome to date someone where you can actually talk to or share your experiences with them, and their actually interested!

*shocked*

geeking out i find i do very shyly, mostly because some level of rejection is out there waiting and hiding in the infinite rolls of social behavior, but once your able to let go and get it out with someone who understands, its pretty damn refreshing

Excellent. So the others have expressed interest in Pirates, must make a time to get together for character generation!

(Mathius is part of our local gaming group - we've been discussing a Pirates of the Spanish Main campaign lately.)

Does this mean you'll be playing Giovanna again?

I just did some informal polling at the RA meeting for handling Homecoming issues (Not my job or even department, buuuut....) and none of them even knew of any RPG groups in the dorms. This town really is going downhill. :(

I might - it depends on what the rest of them decide. I've got a new PC in mind that I haven't used yet (a chinese pirate), but there would have to be a very good reason for her to be cruising around with a boatload of Europeans. If I do roll out Gia again it'll be a reboot, with her starting as a shipmate/cannoneer again instead of Captain.

Spanish pirates. I am jealous.

On the other hand, this is why women SHOULD be more attracted to gaming. It gives you a chance to be the heroine (or anti-heroine) in the fantasy world, instead of the maid in distress.

GDC 2011 marks the third year of the Women in Gaming Awards, a reception hosted by Microsoft and the IGDA Women In Games special interest group that recognizes leading ladies in the gaming industry who have played key roles in development across all genres and platforms. The event held at the Great Room in the W Hotel in San Francisco this afternoon honored women in the following categories: Art, Audio, Business, Design, Engineering, Production, plus a special Rising Star Award. Check out the full list of nominees and winner bios.

Art Category Nominees

Lydia Choy, Senior Tech Artist at Double Fine
Magdalena Dadela, Character Artist at Ubisoft Montreal
Melanie Tremblay, Graphics Team Lead at Ubisoft Montreal
Christine Phelan, Animator at Valve Software
Tasha Harris, Animator at Double Fine
Tasha Harris was born on Christmas Day and has loved gaming ever since she received her Atari 2600 at age 8. She has also enjoyed drawing her whole life, and got introduced to animation through a high school summer program. After studying traditional 2D animation at Cal Arts, she worked at Pixar for nine years before coming to Double Fine in 2006, where she was lead animator on Brütal Legend. Following Brütal Legend, Tasha took on the role of project lead and conceived the Halloween-themed RPG, Costume Quest, which was released on XBLA and PSN in October of 2010. She also draws an autobiographical comic on Double Fine’s website.
