Holy ground around the temple… the fallen soldiers that defended Ch’Their’s people were probably laid to rest there. And goodness knows they don’t want to be hanging around in the afterlife, with the way things have changed recently.
The Rannites probably thought that the ‘good’ people there would never want to raise the dead, or interact with the undead. But hey, they are desperate, and depending on how many were raised, they may have an unkillable army now. Things are looking up.
All Of History. Back up a few pages to where the resurrection dust was explained … in this city, on these grounds, battles have been fought for centuries, if not millennia. That would include the previous war(s) between Ranna and Ch’their. And, given the location, the majority of the fallen would be defenders of Ch’their and her temple. The VAST majority. And C’rhynne dumped out All Of The Dust.
I am OKay with this situation.
I also note: Captain Torvid Mak. I hope we get a bit of his backstory, possibly even from Trevor. He doesn’t strike me as the type to take this lightly. I’m imagining in terms of the undead army that was beholden to Aragon in The Return Of The King. Ranna is about to have some bad hairs days.
And the Rannites are about to learn that the problem with putting the potential for unleashing chaos into the hands of your victims is they have so much less to lose than you
I know the comic isn’t beholden to D&D rules–but I can’t help viewing some situations through that prism. Which in my case was 1st ed. AD&D. These guys seem to have a lot in common with 1st ed. revenants–intelligent and self-aware undead, not intrinsically evil (with their mention of Ch’Their that’s kind of a given)–and looking for a whole lotta payback.
Indeed, I do not adhere to the rules of D&D. I adhere to what makes me laugh or -at least- what gets me through the story. But you’ve nailed the era. While I am steering away from YAFGC’s close association with D&D, that which still is connected is definitely drawn from my old experiences with 1st and 2nd ed.
I guess now comes the part, in which our heroes invite the undead soldiers for a tea and a chat, and after that they march together to clean up the city, creating the new centre of the resistence forces. OK, I am not so sure about the last part. Or the ones before… 🙂
Happy anniversary! I’m sitting here wondering if it just took this long for people to be comfortable commenting or if the comic wasn’t popular enough until (half a?) year ago.
Hahahah, no, I got lots of comments over the years, but when the strip first went up (on another website) there was no commenting function and people discussed the strips on the Forums (which are active still, though few people use it, please do join and have a look.) Then there was also the time we switched hosts and I had to manually import all the strips. We couldn’t import all the comments so we lost a ton. But the readership and commentary has been active for a long time. Even if evidence doesn’t support that at the moment.
Alrighty, I discovered this comic last summer and had a look around the website once, found the forum and forgot about it, whoops. I remember the commenting feature as long as I’ve been here though, that’s why I was asking. I guess more people move to the comments
I thought the undead soldiers might be benign but confused. I did not expect them to be badasses in their own right.
The Rannites made a miscalculation here.
That. Grin.

I’m just wondering how far back do these soldiers date?

That grin makes her look a lot like Glon, time to add another wife to his collection & fulfill his little boy crush.
It *is* a rather orcish grin, isn’t it? Very much reminds me of Maula, just as she settles in for some good ass-kicking…
Maybe Glon is rubbing off on her 😀
"Hey, wasn’t there some prophecy about the dead rising from their graves to defend the kingdom?"
"Nah, never heard of it."
"Oh. Well, there should have been, since that’s exactly what is happening right now! Run!"
And the Rannites are about to learn that the problem with putting the potential for unleashing chaos into the hands of your victims is they have so much less to lose than you
or to check that grounds do not hold the bodies of dozens of cht’eir’s before giving someone special powder that awakens the dead 😛

Revenants definitely exist in later editions, too.
I am sitting in my cubicle, desperately trying to hold in the guffawing, and hurting my gut very badly.
No regrets.
t!
HEE! Sorry for the discomfort. 🙂
Bull-SHIT you’re sorry!
t!
Busted.
Oh that grin
I hope none of the rannite clerics remember they can Control Undead :P.
Depends on their level relative to the undead, IIRC. Besides, there’s probably a LOT of undead waking up right about now.
On second reading, I am even getting a Sam Vimes vibe from the undead Captain. Which can only be a good thing. (Unless you’re a Rannite.)
There are definite similarities to Graham Higgins.

… I’ve seen less evil and intimidating grins on things that usually lurks in the high grass and pounce on the unsuspecting… 😮
I think we can assume any actions from here on out are with Malyss aforethought–but in this instance, I’m okay with it.
The forces of Good–and I guess small "e" evil/sorta bad–need a win here!
This turned out better than expected.
UNDEAD FOR JUSTICE!
Makes seance that with Ranna screwing up the afterlife not all spirits want to stay there
I like how Glon is blowing that strand of hair off his face.
Remember when she threw the raise dead dust on the ground?
So nice to find someone who, when confused, asks for clarification before they start hurting people.
Probably should mention "which aren’t us" really quickly, or you’re going to get a pike in the gut.
I thought that too but they have their own memories. Maybe the Rannites were around back then too.
If Ch’Their was around then — which she clearly was — then so must have been Ranna, at least in name, in the myths.
Ranna was forgotten for a very long time though. Nobody knew that Ch'Thier had a sister until relatively recently.
Oops.
"An undead army was just raised in your backyard, they really don’t like you. What do you do?"
Also–Happy 12th Anniversary! Here’s to more years of this awesome stuff!
Happy Anniversary!
This batch of Rannites is just so screwed. Good. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch of Chaotic Evils. ^.^

a belated Happy Anniversary!
Just how fast can time fly…
Happy Anniversary!
12 years! They grow up quick 😀
Oh, how I love Glon’s smirk in the last panel! Looks, like he’s got some confidence back!
