You believe Rancid couldn’t smell her own Sister? Not to mention, last time she was seen was in a pit of burrowing worms (or some nasty critters)
Every other god or goddess was literally eaten by Rancid
Yes, you are completely correct: it is the one goddess who literally has the power to stop her, she managed to escape undetected from her personal hell-cell and has been sneaking around for months
Nobody said she was fully free. As Ranna’s influence diminishes, her power does as well, and her sister’s increases, as such her prison would eb less able to hold all of her.
You could be correct about the ebb and flow about their Power levels, just personally don’t believe that would be enough to allow the sister to get free and hang around! The first chance she’s got, and she will be gone and back in her own body
Just don’t believe Ranna wouldn’t have some sort of personal warning system or ‘forget’ about her sister
When you announced your Grand Departure, you made it abundantly clear that it was the result of what you perceived as poor treatment, most prominently from T-Chall, who had been excruciatingly patient with you, and more than fair.
I…could easier believe accounts of myself being pithy and succinct than I could ever believe an account of T-Chall being anything but gentlemanly, considerate, patient and decent.
Don’t believe have ever had any problems with T-Chall (and it was you was replying to, not him)
By the way, never left (in fact, have been checking at least twice daily), just never commented, or do you believe it was just a co-inky-dinky happened to comment on this page?
Yes, as a matter of fact, Guesticus, you did say you were leaving. Quoting from your comment in strip #2947, βWas waiting for a response from Rich regarding being "too negative or critical", but no response _is_ a response so will be removing this webic from daily read…β
And please continue from that post and re-read Richβs reply. Pay particular attention to where he says, β…I may be offended by your tendancy to insult my characters, make up nasty nicknames for them…β and also, β…Yes, I have vented in a special venting section of the forum about being hurt or annoyed by some comments. Theyβre not hidden from you…β
And your response? βThatβs the thing: donβt believe have ever mocked you, your characters _or_ your storytelling.β
But then on more than one occasion you have done just that, mocked his characters, used nasty nicknames. And when Rich states quite clearly that he has vented his frustration about βbeing hurt or annoyed by some comments,β do you apologize? Do you stop for a moment and think that you had been wrong? Never mind what you thought, you have Rich telling him it did offend him, it did hurt and annoy him.
And now, you show up again, and you havenβt learned a thing. Itβs βRancid,β and βRack Knee!β Yet you say you like Richβs comic, you admire his work, but oh, heaven forbid you should show him some courtesy, some consideration and stop with this crap. Thatβs why I, and t! have both expressed our displeasure with your return.
And before you say that you think Iβm a fan of Ranna or Arachne, let me assure you Iβm not. I am eagerly looking forward to the day when, I hope, Ranna is finally defeated, removed from being the one ruling deity in the YAFGC universe.
As for Arachne, well, I have never been a fan of her cruelty, or callous lack of feeling for anyone, but she was an amazing character. And Rich did a superb job in the way he developed her over the years. As he has with all his characters.
One would hope that somehow you might have reconsidered your past actions, to show some decency toward Rich and all the hard work heβs put into his creation. But, sadly, that seems to be something you just canβt be bothered about.
One thing have never done, is attack or insult another reader
Others have liked, and used, the term ‘Rancid’
As for reading Rich’s comments on the forums: have never been there, and, at that time, possibly didn’t even know there _was_ a forum
No this is true. You haven’t ever attacked or insulted another reader.
What you did do, however, -and I have the entire conversation at my
fingertips here- is get all flouncy and defensive when T-Chall called
you to the floor regarding hurting my feelings.
I didn’t put T-Chall up to this, and in fact dissuaded him from coming
to my rescue a few times, but he and I have become very good friends over
the years and he’s quite protective of those he cares about.
You see, this habit of giving new names to my characters gets on my
nerves. I don’t have a very rational or reasonable reason for getting
annoyed by it, but I do. –And the fact that other readers liked and picked up on some of them made it worse, not better.–
And while I hadn’t ever intended to make it
public that I was annoyed by it, I did vent in what was supposed to
be a safe place (without naming names, but I think it was obvious who
was renaming my characters), and made it clear that no further actions
were to be taken about it.
When it did come up publically -probably because I am occasionally a
big-mouth- you gave this reason for it:
"[I] Have a mental problem where remembering (or even using) names is a
problem, thatβs why a lot of the time come up with an alternate name as
both a way for me to remember who they are and for me to say their name"
So, okay. Whether it’s a mental problem or not its fine -though clearly
since you’re still using your nicknames instead of the actual names, your
technique is flawed and needs some rethinking.
I could also point out that for someone who keeps claiming having trouble
with words and having mental problems with remembering names, you do
comment and recomment an awful lot. Especially since a lot of those
comments are ‘mansplaining’ things to other readers.
However. My point is I’m glad you never left. I didn’t want you to leave
then and I don’t want you to leave now. You’re here and you’re reading
and you’re still enjoying YAFGC, so that’s great news for me. I like that
you comment, and I don’t want you to stop commenting.
However I won’t extend any sympathy, as you clearly flounced and stated:
"it’s time for me to leave, although will be sad not to know the fate of
Charlie [that is, Charlotte] and Arachne and all the residents of Black
Mountain…" (Actual quote from your comment)
Because you wanted us all to know how hurt you were. It’s natural to
assume that anyone who makes a dramatic exit like that will stick around
to see if any other readers miss them or beg for their return. I’m not
accusing you of this but the fact that you didn’t actually leave speaks
volumes.
Just like I’m reasonably sure that Vixen read every last panel of ‘The Little Librarian’ despite her own declaration of boycott.
So any snark you’re recieving now (especially from t! who is the William
Shakespeare of snark and is also one of my best friends ever -long
predating YAFGC) is because of this contradiction in your words and
actions.
If you want to have a civil conversation about this, I’m down with that.
Do you want to take it up privately? I’m good with that too. I can’t
speak for any of the readers, but I personally have no animosity. I just
don’t like the nicknames. You’ve gotta do you.
That was very well said, Rich. You’re right, you are a great friend of mine, and I do care about you, particularly when something you’ve worked so hard creating, is put down with snide little comments. Even more so when after you have said it bothers you, your feelings about it are dismissed so callously.
Thank you very much T-Chall.
Buuuuuuut, it’s important to point out that Guesticus never put down the comic. In fact he’s bent over backwards to compliment it and admire the work I’ve put into it.
He just -quite rightly- points out the stupidity of the characters which in all fairness is actually (usually) part of the joke. That is when they’re not just plot holes and story errors on my part. Guesticus doesn’t attack YAFGC or me. He points his finger and laughs at the dumb inhabitants of the world.
And gives them annoying nicknames.
So while I appreciate your support and protectiveness, I don’t need a posse against anyone in this case. π
It makes me a bit sad that she doesn’t have a gorgon head here which implies that she wasn’t always one and possibly was forcibly turned to one. Which means her soul is more or less "innocent" and not anywhere near deserving this fate. Sadly I doubt there’s much that can be done to avoid things like this when in war with Ranna.
I’d disagree, actually. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt about YAFGC’s "evil" creatures is that even monsters are capable of decent behaviour. Which means that being forcibly turned into a gorgon doesn’t mean your future actions can be explained away as "the monster made me do it" — it may become easier to choose to do evil, but you’re not forced to do evil. You’re still responsible for your actions, and the former gorgon here is hardly innocent.
Yep, that’s the theme here… being a monster has nothing to do with what people look like. If she’d been a good person before getting a snaky hairstyle, she’d have been a good person as a gorgon.
Forgot Meegs also got gorgoned. It’s pretty straight forward that if you’re not a rannite the potion really does make you evil, regardless of who you were. So this person still probably didn’t deserve this fate. But then lots of people in this comic have met pretty horrific fates.
It was shown early on that who she was has no bearing on who she is as a gorgon with Adina’s sister. So far the only created gorgon to keep her own mind that we’ve been made aware of was the one priestess and she was tortured until she converted.
Sahar may have been voluntary. There was a few hints she resented that she’d been forced into the priestess role and we never really got a look into what kind of person she really is.
Except that we’ve very specifically seen that to not be the case when it comes to the created gorgons. Adina’s sister was turned and instantly turned evil. There wasn’t even indoctrinating torture like with the mistress’s, just forced potion and "bam" Rannite.
It might have different effect on the people though. I can well imagine, that it works quicker and more effective on priests/priestesses, especially if their worshipped god/godess is not reachable. As we have seen, Ch’Thier is captured by Ranna, so she couldn’t help Sahar. I am also not sure how much help Lolth could provide at the moment.
Also, if we look at this girl and Celena, they seemed to me to be more content with their evil doings than Meegs, while being more "themselves" than the priestesses who were turned.
I think I remember hearing somewhere that the potion changes a person as much as needed to make them a loyal Rannite. So someone already evil or with evil tendencies won’t change much in outlook, but someone actively good like Sahar would take a drastic 180 to the point it’s arguable if it’s her or Ranna doing a people-puppet deal.
I actually forgot about Meegs. She turned as well. As a gorgon she was fully a Rannite until captured by Grell. Not sure if she was cured, that seemed kind of ambiguous at the end there, but Bob and Grell didn’t mention that she was a gorgon to the queen and the princess… so… maybe it can be cured. It would seem like a major over site to just dump a Rannite gorgon into their custody without warning. Either way, that’s two named "good" people turned to Rannites. It seems pretty straight forward that the potion overwrites who the person was if they aren’t already a Rannite.
I adore how offhand her eating of the head is in Panel Six. It’s not even a thing for her; it’s banal. Makes the ugliness of her evil even more pronounced and disturbing.
Getting a little nit-picky here, but I am interested in this afterlife scene and what is says on a metaphysical level.
Is Ranna torturing, or annihilating her followers? Is it some sort of "swallow your soul" thing? Or more of a Inferno "continuously chewed by the Devil" affair?
I guess more or less the same what happened with the other gods she ate. She absorbs the power of her soul, though it might be a quite insignificant amount. What I would like to know, wheter those aten by her are completly dead, or just kind of "contained" within her, lets say in a similiar fashion as Boo did in DragonBall…
Ranna is not an evil goddess, she is just misunderstood. If everyone obeyed her to the most minute degree, it would be utopia for her. And that is all she wants, her utopia.
What gets me is how Ranna is calling her stupid, even though she’s basically Dilbert’s pointy haired boss combined with all the most condescending, stupid, and self centered employers from the "Not Always Working" website.
"This is all your fault! Everyone’s fault but mine! Stop screwing up!"
I guess it was established in comments and responses, but once she eats you you are dead dead? No more? Permadead? Not like being eaten by Cthulhu where you are digested for eternity?
But there’s also a strong theme of brainwashing in Ranna’s cult — torturing women to break them to Ranna’s service. We don’t know if the woman here was horrid to begin with, chose to become horrid in Ranna’s service as a path to safety or power, or was twisted into it by the torture and conditioning. We don’t know if she deserves this fate (assuming anyone does).
What we do know, or at least can infer, is that Ranna doesn’t CARE about a soul’s guilt or innocence.
Or how the pregnant Metis was eaten by Zeus, only to later have Metis’s fully grown daughter, Athena, pop out when Hephaestus took a wedge to Zeus’s skull to relieve his headaches.
Apologize for bringing back the strife, was just so excited for the possible return of Arachne (yes, can say names, butt, like with using proper personal pronouns, it is very difficult for me)
As for that Overly Dramatic Rage-Quit nonsense from way back when, there is no excuse for it, butt suffer from depression and when readers attack me (yes, what _they_ did was attack) when felt was just having fun like others were, it just really got to me. After you took the time to talk to me, let me know how much it affected you, believe had stopped with the names (at least with Cadugan)
Would like to have civil conversation, butt as explained once before, don’t have a working email
Not sure what ‘mansplaining’ is, or if it’s a good or bad thing
Just want to add, Rich, you have been more than patient and considerate with me
This is your world, and personally should be more considerate with how comments, while not directed at you directly, still affect you
Every day is a struggle for me, manually entering the URL (well, not _fully_ as this browser remembers the rest after just entering ‘y’ π ) and checking for an update (or simply reading the comments) is one of the things that helps π
It’s almost an automatic part of the day for me: login to the games on Hi5.com on main browser, start InPrivate and type in the URL for GrrlPower first and then YAFGC, _everything_ else after this three is an extra
If it wasn’t for the Hi5 games, probably would never want to even wake up, been continuously logging in for nearly 2400 straight days: Chronic Fatigue and depression can be a deadly (literally) combination
Hey Guesticus;
I’m really sorry this became a ‘thing’ but I’m really pleased with the direction it’s taken. I really appreciate that you’ve taken my words to heart and I promise to do the same for you. I don’t understand your condition with the words, but it doesn’t matter, you do what you need to do to get by. Emails are free to create if you use gmail.
Anyway, I wish you the best and hope you’re able to get some help. I’m very pleased to be of help in my small way and I’m sorry I can’t update as often as I’d like. But there’s more coming I promise. π
Don’t worry about not updating as often as you would like, Real Life affects everyone, especially web-artists
Will often take a short-dip in the Archival Pool (and sometimes ‘short dips’ turn into ‘Olympic 800 Meters swims’ π )
reading the comments I can understand that someone would have difficulty remembering spoken names- but surely that would not be a problem with a written text which can always be referred to if uncertian
It’s a combination of not remembering names fullstop (touch of Alzheimer’s) and some weird crap with using names both spoken and written (no idea what the hael that’s about, butt it affects family names as well)
Possibly just a case of getting old and head injuries
Rich, I am sorry that you thought I was boycotting you or your comic, I was not. I was just avoiding this arc, as myself and Rancourt (Justin Carpenter) have had some unpleasant history and I made the personal vow to have nothing to do with anything he did.
I’m sorry if I hurt you with my behaviour.
I never thought you were boycotting me or my comic. You made it abundantly clear why you were going to ‘sit this one out’. Which, incidentally, could have been done to honour your personal vow without a public announcement clearly intended to hurt Justin.
It also raises the question: If you were sitting out this arc, how did you know I mentioned you?
I also said I would check in once a month to see if the arc was finished, I was doing that on the first of each month, scanned the comments and saw the mention of me. I also have friends who read the comic.
Reminds me of Imhotepβs words βDeath is only the beginning.β Or in this case, not.
Has got me wondering about the shadowy figure at the bottom there though.
the identity of the shadowy figure should be fairly clear
Who do you believe it to be?
Now I’m wondering how they got a Gorgon’s head
She WAS the gorgon that they killed in #3730. Now her soul is back in Ranna’s Hell.
Thank you!
One of the Queen’s Guards remove it from her shoulders
RACK KNEE!!!!
Knew we hadn’t seen the last of you! π
Ya think? Gosh, I hope you’re right.
Who else would be freely skulking around Ranna’s Hell? Certainly ain’t Jone
The good goddess that was overpowered by Ranna’s takeover slowly regaining power as Ranna’s influence is removed?
You believe Rancid couldn’t smell her own Sister? Not to mention, last time she was seen was in a pit of burrowing worms (or some nasty critters)
Every other god or goddess was literally eaten by Rancid
Makes more sense than the woman that nearly killed Ranna and stopped her plans getting to wander around free and untortured.

Sadly, we knew the same about you.
t!
Sadly, indeed.
Sadly believed the commenters in this webic were better than that π
That is a baldfaced lie.

Okay, Rich. My main concern has how this might have upset you. This relieves my worry. Thank you.
Surprised the Suspicious Silhouette wasn’t in the "I had to do it to ’em" pose….
I actually had to research what that meant! Heheh… fortunately or unfortunately I’m not nearly that tuned-in.
Well looks like she just got a true death having her soul eaten. But, little by little ehr power will fall
Ranna really should watch her diet a bit better. After all, she might start gaining weight if she deals with stress by showing down on "comfort food."

Kinda said the same thing, butt swearing is not allowed
Basically said that she may not have been a natural gorgon, butt she was always a natural b-word
She enjoyed making C’rhynne scatter the Dust

Lina, Sahar and that Drow Teacher were the only ones we knew about before their conversion, so hardly a viable group for study on the matter
But we do know what it did to Sahar. So even without sizable test groups and proper scientific testing, we know that it can turn people.
Sahar may have been voluntary. There was a few hints she resented that she’d been forced into the priestess role and we never really got a look into what kind of person she really is.

These two comics: https://yafgc.net/comic/2878-failed-warning/ and https://yafgc.net/comic/2880-the-serpents-vengeance/
I think I remember hearing somewhere that the potion changes a person as much as needed to make them a loyal Rannite. t!
In fact, it remember to me the painting "Saturn Devouring His Son" of Francisco Goya. With silhouette and creepiness.
Especially considering that its her soul, so she is effectively erased even from the after life…
Getting a little nit-picky here, but I am interested in this afterlife scene and what is says on a metaphysical level.
Is Ranna torturing, or annihilating her followers? Is it some sort of "swallow your soul" thing? Or more of a Inferno "continuously chewed by the Devil" affair?
Technically, you are not being nit-picky, you are just looking for more inormation
But I still want to know:
What happens to you in Hell after Ranna has bitten your head off?
I guess more or less the same what happened with the other gods she ate. She absorbs the power of her soul, though it might be a quite insignificant amount. What I would like to know, wheter those aten by her are completly dead, or just kind of "contained" within her, lets say in a similiar fashion as Boo did in DragonBall…
Ranna is not an evil goddess, she is just misunderstood. If everyone obeyed her to the most minute degree, it would be utopia for her. And that is all she wants, her utopia.
All Praise Ranna!
I like how her wings are slightly lower in panel 5, expressing her disappointment.
Nice catch!
I didn’t notice because she’s arching her back, too, but yeah – there it is.
t!
No, what Ranna can’t be bothered with, is punishing someone she believes won’t _learn_ from the punishment, and waste her time in the process
Gorgonzolla is still guilty of letting Glon and company steal a second of Ranna’s strongholds
Good help is hard to find.
Even harder when you are an incompetent leader to start with
Besides that, finding *good* help is a lot harder for an *evil* employer…
‘Good’ in this case means ‘competent’, butt you knew that π
"Evil Minion" is pretty much synonymous with "Bottom of the Barrel." I know this all too well.

Is that arachne to the rescue ?
Well, not to the rescue, at least not for Gorgonzolla, butt… may be?
Or how the pregnant Metis was eaten by Zeus, only to later have Metis’s fully grown daughter, Athena, pop out when Hephaestus took a wedge to Zeus’s skull to relieve his headaches.
Woops. This was supposed to be in response to THAT bard, up a few comment chains.
And whom’s that?
You can tell I got a college education….
This is not an excuse, butt an explanation
Just want to add, Rich, you have been more than patient and considerate with me
This is your world, and personally should be more considerate with how comments, while not directed at you directly, still affect you
Thank you for this.
You have no idea how much it means to me.
As far as I’m concerned, we’re square.
t!
Never felt otherwise, which is why your comment hurt
Butt, let’s just focus on enjoying this webic for another 10+ years π
Thank you, Guesticus. This has meant a lot to me, too.
Wishing you all the best, and better days in the future.
T-Chall
Hey Guesticus;
You!
Stop feeding the troll.
Get back to making my comic!
t!
I also said I would check in once a month to see if the arc was finished, I was doing that on the first of each month, scanned the comments and saw the mention of me. I also have friends who read the comic.
See, Ranna? THIS is why you don’t pass out Gorgon heads like candy at Halloween. It’s far too easy for them to be turned against you.
She is best known for being the goddess of cruelty, but she is also a goddess of cutlery.
