3397 Fatinah Lives
on October 28, 2020
Chapter: Conclusions
Characters: Fatinah, Prince Kassim Ibn Tambid Al Umbril
Location: Elegrost Fields
Look who’s joining us for Halloween this year! It’s [most of] Bob! Well a Beholder at least. Or it will be when we get around to finishing it.
<3
As in ". . . for a few minutes more", or ". . . as some kind of dessicated elf"?
Because if it’s the latter, they can make it work.
From Kassim’s look of sheer joy and relief in the last panel, I would guess she’s not just clinging to life for a few poignant last words, but that she’s showing signs of improvement. How complete the recovery will be and how long it will take are open questions, but good news is good news!
Her arm seems a bit… limp, in the last panel though
"Hey, I’m tired over here. And arms are HEAVY!"
She’s alive, but in what condition?
Well, she’s an elf, so she’s probably *still* going to outlive Kassim, even if he dies of old age
I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Also, she might be blind.
Elves are very long lived, baring an(other) incident, she would naturally outlive *any* human
Gonna be a loooong recovery.
I’ve forgotten who these people are, but good for them I guess.
Tomb of the Sphinx/Umbril storyline. Prince Kassim is of Umbril’s royal family, and Fatinah was the servant of the evil warlock.

The start of the storyline "Turg’s Saga".
Just soak her for a bit!
Afraid there is no magic for reversing curses and rejuvenate casts even…
The perfect to prince Kassim i said
Looks undead to me. Particualarly with the stumbling ‘zombie’ type speech
If she *is* a zombie, Kassim is lifting her head up conveniently close to his throat.
"You’re…so…considerate…" *chomp*
D’awww!!
Somebody seems to be chopping onions around here or something……
She’s alive. ALLLIVVEEEEE!!!
(With Hallowe’en, and considering how mostly/potentially un-deadish she looks, I thought a Frankenstein reference appropriate.
This does not alter this strip’s shot straight to my feels. Yay!!!)
Maybe Fatinah acted like a battery and is holding in all the magic that aged her.
I don’t think Kassim threw magic at Fatinah to age her; he was in magical-suction mode at the time. He pulled the magic/life energy *out* of her, at a rate that would have killed her had Kassim not broken the connection.
Until this strip I’d figured he did so too late for anything other than an exchange of a few last words, but now it seems hat she might pull through. 🙂
*that
I’d feel a lot better if her eyes had pupils; the "dead eye" look is never good.
Kurassa, not Kassim.
Erm…yes, exactly. I need coffee before I try to type!
I wish the hearts weren’t there in that final panel.
The rest of the art tells the story on its own (as do the word balloons), and the overall effect feels too Archie Comics for the bittersweet relief of love discovered on a battlefield.
t!
That’s a good point. I seem to recall the feeling that I didn’t want to leave any doubt, but I guess I underestimated the drawing as it stands.
I think they are good as is, they make the moment slightly light-hearted for us.
They’re not hearts. They’re affection moths. Endemic to the yafgc world, and they can actually be a real annoyance. You’re trying to share a heartwarming scene with your lover, and you both keep having to shoo away these damned bugs…
They’re either distant cousins of those bluebirds that show up when a princess sings, or just an example of convergent evolution. Biology is strange in that world, especially when wayward gods and goddesses decide it could use more guidance, so nobody is quite sure.
> They’re affection moths.
Do they eat carrion?
t!
Moths? Thought they were flutter-by’s, just as annoying as moths, but only show up during the day in fields
Love the beholder-going-to-be!
Holy— that’s one impressive beholder!
That beholder is brilliant! And with some of the necessary distance built in for these weird times already, too! 🙂
Turns out beholders are immune to Covid, but they live in abject *dread* of conjunctivitis.
How much did the peoples of this world rely on magic for everyday activities? With magic gone. or at least severely depleted, what new classes of specialists will arise to replace the now redundant, and powerless, magic users?
I suspect the answers to these questions will be significant themes in the upcoming arcs, and best answered within the context of the narrative, "show not tell." I greatly look forward to finding out!
Spending the morning cleaning up after Hurricane Zeta. I kind of know how all the characters are feeling now. Big mess on the Gulf Coast.
Jonathon, sending lots of good wishes to you and everyone in Zeta’s path. I hope you and all your family are okay.
Yard is cleaned up and power is back on. Now to have roof inspected and see just how much damage there is. Good thing this was such a late season storm or it could have been much worse. The morning after, everyone was outside checking on neighbors, helping clear debris and those with generators were running extension cords to those without. You’d almost think there wasn’t an election next week.
Those are great neighbors.
Rich, your Bob is coming along great. This will put a whole new spin on “Bobbing” for apples.
Dammit, that pun is heinous and awful and I wish I’d thought of it!
I hope we get to see a picture of Bob when he is finished. 🙂 We aren’t decorating or handing out candy this year (too dangerous) so I won’t get to see many costumes.
Love the beholder!
Huh, usually it’s the elf who still loves their aged human partner. A flip!
