Chapter: Conclusions
Characters: C'rhynne, Eddy the Mage, Helen DiPhoenix, Leland, Lord Lewstrom VII King of the Undead "Lewie the Lich", Naomi Phoenix, Princess Ata, Trevor Larkin
Location: Kingdom of Elegrost
I really hope you don’t actually ever update Lewie’s tag beyond adding more and more titles to it "Lord Lewstrom VII king of the undead ‘Lewie the Lich’, Mage of Elegrost". By the end of the comic he could add like "cyborg general" and stuff to it.
"I am the very model of…"
"STOP SINGING!"
Alternatively…
"It is consequently my degrading duty to serve this upstart as First Lord of the Treasury, Lord Chief Justice, Commander-in-Chief, Lord High Admiral, Master of the Buckhounds, Groom of the Back Stairs, Archbishop of Titipu, and Lord Mayor, both acting and elect, all rolled into one. And at a salary! A Lewstrom paid for his services! I a salaried minion! But I do it! It revolts me, but I do it!"
Ooh, i like yours better!
Lovely <3
Gilbert & Sullivan reference brownies
Boy, that would make new readers very confused.
What about the rest of the former Black Mountainites?
Nope, "you can crash at my place" is strictly for apprentices and their sisters.
I don’t think the tower is THAT big anyway …
Was mostly just thinking: how are they going to react to Lewie going to work for the ‘enemy’
And that’s not even how they are going to react to finding out he now has skin!
Ah, then my answer below is a non-sequitur. I thought you meant "Where will the Black Mountain refugees live and what will they do there," rather than "How will they react to Lewstrom’s new gig?"
However, I don’t see why they’d particularly care about his choice. Elegrost is no longer high on any of their sworn-enemies-lists, and the old Black Mountain folks don’t really ask or expect Lewie’s loyalty even if it were.
But yes, Lewie with skin will freak them all out for a while.
What kind of sorry-ass mage tower isn’t an extra-dimensional construct with all the interior space imaginable?
Eddy’s 😛
I dunno it always looked a bit bigger on the inside ?
Are you looking for a one-size-fits-all answer? They’ll each make new lives where and how they want. So far, that looks like Glon and his followers in the Goblin Lands, Nephilia and her subjects in the troglodyte caverns, Nike and her sisters somewhere with sufficient elevation, Bob wherever Gren is, Gren wherever Bob is, the rest of the beholders wherever their King is NOT…and the rest to be determined!
Well, that does answer a question yet unasked, so thank you 😀
I’m kinda hoping that the mountaineers and Elegrost can put their past behind them and join forces permanently, it’d be cool to see the city expand to house all the wayward souls, it could be like a Mecca, anyone is welcome, the ultimate cultural melting pot. even if they don’t all join in I can honestly see some of the monster types becoming "domesticated." the Harpies would be welcome in any city, so long as they are well fed to avoid them eating people they’d be really useful to an army. not only would a flying combat unit be invaluable in a war against ground based enemies, but they’d also help the ground based soldiers relieve stress. if kobolds could be trained like dogs they’d make great infiltration units, being able to tunnel under walls and slip into fortified locations without being spotted. if orc human interbreeding became more common eventually the population of the city would be almost entirely half orc, the nation would be overall better due to having all the strengths of both sides without any of their weaknesses, there’s a reason Gruumsh was so keen on making a perfect version of them. Chimera seems to get along with humans well enough to act as a city guardian/mascot. and trolls… well they’d certainly solve the problem of keeping the harpies well fed. normally you wouldn’t want beholders anywhere near your city, but this setting’s version of them don’t seems to have the same mental weaknesses of the standard variant, being constantly paranoid and murderous at the mere thought of another of their kind. while they probably don’t belong in the city proper I could see them being sentries. just build a tower every thousand feet or so, let the beholders use them as their lairs, they’d make a great invisible wall stopping anyone from entering their territory. then you can have a couple trade routes moving through the beholder’s blind spots. even if some people are able to slip past the beholder wall the simple idea that a kingdom has a weaponized beholder grid set up would be enough to prevent most lesser powers from attempting an invasion. a single beholder could take on 100 normal men in combat, you’d either need a massive army to overwhelm them or you’d need incredibly strong soldiers to over power them, either way, a piddly band of 20 raiders would be stopped dead in their tracks. also a natural wall would start to form from the petrified bodies of their victims, a line of human sized stone pillars would prevent most siege weapons from moving freely even if the beholder was killed. this is starting to sound a bit like a reincarnated as a slime fanfic and it’s giving me incredible ideas for a D&D campaign setting.
Ever heard of an old game series called "Eye of the Beholder"?
it looks interesting, but a bit old for my tastes. if they ever did a remake of it I’d certainly try it.
Point was, the beholder was [spoiler]
Be carefull, he is going to retire and you will have to take care of a lot of stuff, technically…is a trap!!
free house is free house
They’ve both got thousands of years of training in different types of magic, wondering if the tower will only survive because of the magic nerf.
Things finally looking up for Lewie.
…must be a trap.
Eh. A stopped clock is right twice a day. Same for the multiverse, I imagine.
Remember that he was cursed with bad luck after he turned evil, his fate was to have *good* luck if he stayed good.
Eddy obviously missed being a salesman of his list of roles a Mage must undertake
I’ve noticed, Eddy looks more cartoony than most of the other human characters. Usually that indicates monster heritage. Or am I just over thinking it?
You’re overthinking it. In YAFGC I experiment with different styles of design for the characters, partly because it helps to make them unique and distinguishable. When I stick to a lazy generic style the characters get lazily generic and hard to tell apart. After some discussion it’s clear that I need to do this again. Funfact: Kurassa is of the same design style as Eddy.
So, Kurassa is what Eddy would look like after a shave and a haircut?
Not exactly. They’re similar.
Now… there is something very specific about Kurassa’s design that just about everybody missed. And it’s not surprising, ’cause I’m not as subtle an artist as all that.
Back then I was still working on another comic (or… maybe I had just recently finished it? I’m not sure), called "The 10 Doctors" you may have heard of it. It was not unpopular within the Doctor Who fandom and scored me a bunch of guest slots on Podcasts.
In it I was caricaturing all the various incarnations of the Doctor (there were only 10 at the time). Well, when it came time for me to create a Middle Eastern style evil sorcerer, I created Kurassa. Kurassa is a mashup of Koura and Sakura, the evil sorcerers from "7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad". GV’s Koura was played by Tom Baker -aka the 4th Doctor.
Soooo… Kurassa in YAFGC is Tom Baker from "The 10 Doctors" in the GVoS makeup.
Furthering the gag, later when Kurassa and Kassim and the gang from Umbril meet up with a Sha’ir named Waleed, I based him on Patrick Troughton’s character from "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger", a sort of Greek Philosopher/scientist type and used my design for the 2nd Doctor in "The 10 Doctors". So he’s Patrick Troughton from "The 10 Doctors" in S&tEotT makeup.
There’s a very "10 Doctors" scene in YAFGC where Kurassa and Waleed are arguing about which tunnel they should be taking. With Kurassa arguing that it should be the 4th tunnel (4th Doctor) and Waleed arguing that it should be the 2nd (2nd Doctor). It reflects the dialogue I was writing in t10D at the time. Nobody got it, though, and only I was laughing.

Even the strip title hints at my old joke.
Read "The 10 Doctors" years ago
Sometimes I can catch subtle references, and sometimes I miss obvious and deliberate shoutouts
Well not to worry, there’s a comment from you on that page that dates back to last December that hints that you actually caught on to the gag.
(epic facepalm)
I have absolutely no right to have never noticed that.
That… was not me, that was Another Rich
Looking at it again with this new knowledge, can definitely see a bearded Troughton in Waleed, not so much a Baker in Kurassa though, but I would probably need to see a younger pre-Doctor Baker to see it
Can see the semblance between Kurassa and Eddy though: they both have the ‘long neck and no jaw’ look (almost said ‘no chin’, but it’s definitely more of a ‘no jaw’, at least to me)
Oh right! My mistake. Sorry to both of you.
Yay for Lewie!
And hate to be picky, but isn’t his arm a bit pale?
Oops. Yes, I forgot to shade it.
I mean, technically, Ata still has squatter’s rights to the probably-no-longer-cursed city of Ruun…but from her smile in Panel 8, I take it she’s done with that place.
Even if she wanted to go back to Ruun, her desire to stay close by her brother outweighs it by a long shot.
oh hey, that could be the new home of the black mountaineers, I forgot about that.
Very nice to see Lewie find a place in the world along with his sister. A bit amusing that Eddy seems to get along with him much better now that he is no longer skeletal. I guess Ch’Thier un-cursing and restoring him went a long way to making Eddy see him in a new light.
I hope we get to see Glon, Lucas, and their families and forces next. Given Lucas is both a ‘monster’, and considers Glon family, and is also a Duke of Elegrost, I think that will contribute to there being peace between the people formerly of Black Mountain, and the kingdom of Elgrost. After all, they all just fought on the same side. What to do with the remains of Rana’s forces will be an interesting question though.
I also want to see what is happening in the afterlife, specifically the areas and souls Rana had been claiming dominion over, whether they liked it, or not. I know Arachne is dead, but just a glimpse of her there would be… soothing, I suppose?
Thank you for all your stories Rich. 🙂
Especially since Arachne was obviously concerned since she warned that Ranna owns the afterlife, so ppl should be afraid to die. Seeing that fear relieved would be closure and comforting, yes 🙂
Although I just had an amusing image of Arachne making Ranna her bitch…. Definitely closure and comforting lol
Fan-art!!!
Arachne likes torture and pain, I imagine drow hell would be a field of flowers and rainbows.
Drow go to the Demonweb in the Abyss. Not Hell.
I do love how Lewie and Ata have just tacitly decided they’re going to live together for the time being.
Probably got some catching up to do.
t!
They probably talked about it when walking to the fight: namely, would Ata stay with Lich Lewie wherever the Black Mountaineers end up? Or would Lich Lewie stay with Ata wherever she settled (probably the former Ruins of Ruun)?
Wait wait wait, hold the phone, "*potential* sleeping chambers"? You mean, they haven’t actually been used to sleep in before?
And where are the accordions? Did Ben bring one?
Well, there usually only were two residents of the tower, so if there were more than two chambers, the rest would at most have been used as guest rooms… and how often have we seen that tower needing guest rooms?
There re only going to be two living there again, Lewie and Ata, right?
It was the ‘potential’ that threw me off, Eddy could have just said "with sleeping chambers", which should have been implied if they were expected to *live* there
Not a critique on the writing, just a comment on how people speak
Yeah, I noticed that too, and it made me wonder how badly Meg might have trashed the place on her way out… time for another trip through the archives.
I also noticed that the mages are shaking with their LEFT hands. Did I also miss something about the both of them being Left-handed?
But anyways….. THIS scene is great, my idea of a Happy Begining! 😀 😀 😀
I sorta assumed he meant something along the lines of "there are various storage rooms that you can probably put a bed in if you clean them out first." I’m currently staying in a 2 bedroom house with 7 other people, you gotta find sleeping room where you can, I’m on a recliner in the living room currently. it’s been 3 years since I slept in an actual bed, not sure my spine could survive the system shock of sleeping somewhere actually comfortable at this point.
