Interesting. The first cut must be by the victim to hide the book. Who and why made the 2nd one? Since it seems to be close to the 1st, the perpetrator must have seen it. It also kind of rules Maula out. She wouldn’t be caught dead with an improperly sharpened blade.
Except that neither cut, especially the first one, seems to be long enough to fit a book through, unless it was a very small one…a condensed gnu edition ?
If the two cuts are contiguous — and it’s just for the reader’s benefit that they don’t quite appear to meet on the page — then one hypothesis could be "Taurenil hid something small in the mattress, and the later interloper enlarged the cut so people would assume the hidden object had been her book."
When trying to be witty about cuts and things like that, I realised an organisation like the King’s Swords needs a quartermaster skilled in the upkeep of the blades used by Runtherd’s praetorians. Such a position would be held in esteem, not only for the work done but the mentoring and teaching the warriors proper field maintenance.
Oh, and I am now thinking about where Sulaaf got her knowledge about tears. I suspect she was promoted to the position after showing skill and bravery in the field. Improvising by ripping linen into field dressings in a heavy downpour. Not as knowledgeable then, the bandages frayed and were not as good, ruined by the shower. A bittersweet memory.

Then the Captain would just claim that the victim made the rougher cut first, and Maula made the sharper-edged one after, unfortunately.
The first cut is the deepest…
I now expect lots of cutting remarks about why someone would attempt such subterfuge.
The knife and accuracy prophecies of Sulaaf al’Shamshir, kingsword
Oh, goodness, now that is funny.

They got to watch out for her sharp tongue.

I like that theory.
Well that’s not a worrying statement in the slightest
A friendly warning or a sincere menace?

A true edge lord, you could say.

All gone now, like tears in the rain.
How much time has elapsed at the abby since Lucas and company arrived? My guess is 1-2 hours so far plus a few days since the first strip.
You’re correct for the time at the Abbey; I’d have to defer to Rich for the geography and overland speed.

Not big enough for a book, but a page or book mark would fit easily…
