Bernard is the murderer!! Also…does cardugan have just spoken to a dead mouse? Talking with animals doesn’t need the animal to hear you? (I have that a bit rusted)
Unless rats understand human language, there must be something else that happens when Cadugan talks to Bernard. If not, may be he speaks much louder that his speech bubble suggests?
I imagine Cadugan is mostly using body language to communicate with Bernard. He’s mirroring the conversation in common tongue so the humans can keep up, and also to focus his own mind (the way someone concentrating on a task might narrate out loud what they’re doing.)
It’s a 3D perspective shot I was going for, with Cadugan close up and Heigh further back. Cadugan’s head takes up half the panel (it should probably have been a third or two-thirds, but I’m doing these fairly quickly). Also he’s low as he inspects Bernard’s tail closely. The fact that his mouth is mostly obscured is unfortunate in that no attention was meant to be drawn to it specifically, it’s just how his face lined up with my hasty staging. But y’know, it kinda works. Makes it quirky.
I took it as sort of Bernard’s point of view, given the angle, and Cadugan being much closer and thus ‘larger’. The mouth being off-image just helps indicate how much larger he appears than Heigh from that perspective. It works for this.
Have Cadugan’s ranger abilities changed since the decrease in magic? I’m assuming his ability to understand Bernard’s squeaks don’t rely on magic.
If he takes Bernard outside the anti-magic bubble would he still be able to heal Bernard’s tail? Would he also be able to give Bernard the ability to hear? Not that he should, because if he does that Bernard would be able to hear the high pitch sound, and the folks in the abbey might not want the little guy to run away.
Thing is, Cadugan’s abilities were never magical. He grew up in the forest and is part nature spirit. He cares for the animals using his knowledge of biology and herbalism and with his natural affinity and empathy with plants and animals. He’s more strongly connected to them than a Human without being fully a part of them like a n elf. It allows him to step back and look in and know what needs to be done.

That, or Bernard has some advanced lipreading skills.

That’s just about exactly it.

Dizney prinzess confirmed.
And this is why Bernard has a character tag. 🙂
maybe he witnessed the the murder
His tail was stepped on…so someone went down there for a damn good reason
Okay, I *gotta* know, Rich –
What is the benefit of staging Cadugan in Panel 3 with his mouth mostly off-panel?
I really like it, but I don’t know *why*.

Ah, got it. Thank you for the info, Rich.
