Awwww. Bernard was already adorable. The "nnnikkk nnnnikk" sounds from last strip cemented it. And now Bernard and Sibling Re’en have pushed the adorable to lethal levels.
(Hey, maybe Taurenil didn’t die by poison OR piano-crushing. Maybe she was squeeing over Bernard and forgot to breathe.)
Voldemort. The bad guy from Harry Potter. He is pretty much noseless, in order to look more snakelike.
I wonder why the name is Reeeaaawwwen instead of Reawen. I suppose the trebled letters are to show that the name should properly be pronounced by elongating those syllables overly? Probably something specific to whatever race/culture this new character belongs to.
> I suppose the trebled letters are to show that the name should properly be pronounced by elongating those syllables overly?
It’s exactly that: an effort being made by a different culture – and language (probably alphabet as well) – to achieve correct, respectful pronunciation.
First, if the title of this strip was also intended as a pun on "House" (or House M.D. as they called it in non North American markets)–I approve. If not, I’m nicking it. 😉
Bernard’s look in the last panel–yep, that’s adorable.
Otyughs and–whatever/whomever Re’en is–and deaf mice. I love how cosmopolitan and open-minded this place is. Of course, if your focus is games of chance, all that stuff would be a pointless distraction anyway. 😉
House is a medical mystery show starring Hugh Laurie, (with a great cast) who is brilliant at interpreting behaviors and combining them with medical knowledge to bring to light other people’s problems, while pretty much ignoring hospital rules, his own personal issues, and his effect on others. He’s very caustic. He was in an accident at some point in the show that left him with a cane and an addiction to pills. Definitely a role that shows off Laurie’s non-comedic acting talents, and a show that deals with consequences.
I’m looking forward to seeing this character’s effect on the plotline, and how/which aspect will do what. And of course, more of Behrrnaarrrrrdd, who i’ve been squeeeeeing about since his appearance. It’s nice that he’s been rescued. Twice. Lol

It is.

Thanks!

Steal with my compliments!

Likewise, that a lot of the members of the various races are able to get along well is a delightful aspect to YAFGC.
Granted, not everyone is willing to get along with folks outside of their race, or within their race, for that matter. But a good number of people are willing to overlook those things and base their dealings on who the person is on the inside.
It’s also interesting to see that while we don’t know what race Re’een belongs to, it’s clear it’s one known by Lucas and Cadugan, judging from their reaction. This is not at all like the first meeting of Hu-Hu in "The Night Queen" story line.
Well, this is not an Otyugh. Those are… not remotely humanoid. There IS one here, we've been told (on 3472) but his name is Brother Yeecch (who happily cleans the latrines, but does not get many visitors).
If this Sibling Re’en is female, then a big, big thank you for not assuming all females have mammaries! Egg-laying and other species that do not need to nurse their young should have no need of milk glands. Unless, like Harpies, evolution gave them something similar as a way to lure their prey.
But I suspect "Sibling" is a title chosen as the asexual version of "brother" or "sister". Which is also cool, as why should other species conform to our standards? All thoughts which crowd out my normal punning, but that’s okay.
The "mammaries" aren’t the big round bouncing boobies. The mammary glands that produce the milk will produce the same amount regardless of the size of the breasts – which are just lumps of fatty tissue created as a sexual characteristic to attract mates.
It’s a consequence of being bipedal. Quadraped females entice males into mounting them from behind, showing off their rears. A sexually attractive rear is large, round, and firm – indicative of muscle and padding, a healthy mate to bear strong progeny.
So when said quadrapeds evolve into bipedal descendants who interact front-to-front during social interactions, they’re going to need a sexual characteristic that’s close to the face. And which resembles an attractive rear – two full, round, firm mounds.
They’re like the tailfeathers of a male peacock. They do nothing for the milk production, they’re just there to be attractive to potential mates.
That makes sense. So a reptilian biped could well have developed some strange butt-like growths on their necks or chests or shoulders for the same reason.
How wonderfully weird.
Correct me if I’m wrong, as I am no biologist, but this round-rear-thing isn’t specific to mammals? I mean, look at frogs, lizards, or birds, they attract their partners in different ways, like colours, sounds, odours and stuff, right? So for a being that comes from such evolutionary lines (i.e. lizardmen), it still wouldn’t make sense to have big breasts.
As adorable as Bernard and Sibling Re’en are together…I feel compelled to note two things.
1) In a murder case involving a potent and obscure poison, a doctor is a natural suspect.
2) In a hypothetical physical altercation, a brave mouse like Bernard will rush to the rescue of his best friend, even at the risk of someone stepping on his tail.

What race is this Re’en?
She’s a veaul-de-mort, look at her profile in panel 3.
But IS Sibling Re’en a "she?" Given the nongenderness of "Sibling," and not given "Sister?"
Yeah, sounds like a "they" to me.
What is a veaul-de-mort? Google is not being much help.
I don’t know, but it doesn’t sound like someone who would get along well with muggles.

The thing on her head makes her look more Luke Freezer from Dragon Ball
I was thinking it made her look more like Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy but we’d have to see her whistle first 😉
Oldarmourer, that description is anarrowly worded depiction abolt a character.

I’m going to guess doppelganger, since it would complicate the situation.
Nice name.

Ah! I have heard of that show, but under the name "Doktor Haus", which is why I didn’t recognize it. Thank you!
at least we now know she didn’t die from Lupus…it’s never Lupus

How do you know that Harpies are not nursing their young after they hatched from the egg? What more, are you sure that they lay eggs?
Re the "Voldemort" comments above; as all the drawings of Re’en only show what’s above the belt, are there legs below, or a serpent’s tail?
