Hmmm. I suppose there could have been some outside ill-intent that it would be better for Louise to be Louis, like a prophecy or she was born with a mark that was anathema to the locals (but a boy could manage better). Or even–although would benefit Eldwig more–some sort of inheritance.
I should check the archives and see how Eldwig treated Louis; maybe there's a clue there.
He sold both of them to the Rannites, tried to abandon them to save his own skin when Flannet staged a rescue and ignored them while focusing on his own comfort in the wagon on the way to Greyfort. And that's just the first half dozen or so strips.
It seems that dear old Pater did not think highly of those of the feminine persuasion. It was his own way of saying he wanted a son and did not value a daughter.
If these were real people with their needs and what not I'd bet ya that it was really for his Father's own good, but he plays it as "it would benefit you too" even though he never asked Louise what she wanted. E.G. he needed a male heir to get some inheritance, or to ensure a title stayed within the family (and if they happened to be more broke than they show, a male heir would get a dowry, while a daughter would instead be married and a dowry given). It could be something more complex (a curse that affects women in their line) but even then why not just say it outright from the start and let them choose?
Realizing this is a story, the father has been shown to be an irredeemable asshole, and someone we shouldn't dislike, so I bet the reason will be at least as disagreeable as the above. It reeks of the fact that the only sex-reassignment surgeries done on minors ever recorded were on intersex children pushed by binary-cis-gender-only beliefs.
We know he's an unpleasant person, prudish, rigid, cowardly, etc, but it doesn't look we've seen any real interaction between him and Louis in the past, so no clues there. I look forward to any forthcoming explanations.
Hit the road jack, and don't come back no more, no more, no more, no more~
Hit the road jack!
But please wait a few minutes so we can hit you repeatedly with whatever is at hand.
This story has twistability. 😁
"…for your own good."

(And that was supposed to be a stand-alone comment, not a reply. *sigh*)
The comments apparently have twistibility too!

Darn. Hoped for an explanation. And a sound beating. But mostly an explanation.
The mom will probably give it.
Goodbye and good riddance, Eldwig! Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya. No, on second thought, let that door hit ya, and HARD!
I'm thinking groin level doorknob.
Repeatedly.
Oooo!
Made me think of this

Yep, the image is 404 now.
Well, they lost all their goods and money and on the other hand never have to see that man another time.
Fair trade.
It was prophecied that his daughter would beat him, so it was for the kid's own good to not be a daughter.
What a jerk.
And so, realising he was no longer in charge through threat of physical violence, he did what most of his kind do.
And wound up with her money anyway. As too many of his kind do.
t!
Oft the world sucketh.
