Now that I think about it, someone asked in an earlier strip how are there guns, since they was their first appearance.
Given how the years have passed and quite a few things have advanced, it wouldn’t be strange for guns to have been invented slightly before that strip.
Now I wonder how long until we see cannons on land and armour made of Aluminum or newer materials.
Gummer should focus on inventing trains and fuel for them.
Aluminium is tricky. I mean, if you can get it with magic, sure, go ahead. But until electrolysis is invented, non-magical production is extremely difficult/expensive. In the middle of the 19th century, aluminium was more expensive than gold or platinum.
Those are the old, one-shot variety, which takes a lot of time to get loaded and if it get wet, the gunpowder gonna turn unusable, therefor often unreliable. Pirates used as in a close combat it could go through even a knight's armor, but with each pistol they had only one chance to shoot. One injured enemy in a heavy armor still better opponent, than one unharmed and armored one.
