Zombies are animate flesh, but they still have fleshy limitations. There’s no intelligence in a deceased brain unless you give it a magical kick (like Lewstrom did), and then you can pretty much ghost-pilot the corpse. Animate skeletons are more magic-based, requiring spellwork to maintain and articulate the joints. They can have much more intelligence, as it is now spell-based, and no longer limited by a fleshy armature.

Cannons means tiny portable cannons. Also can I point out how awesome a character Rosa is!
The pirates and sailors have always had them, it's not clear why firearms have never caught on on land.
