It always seems to me that raising the dead and necromancy in general hastens decay and decomposition so that folk who died minutes ago suddenly look like they’ve been dead for weeks. It’s the great mystery of necromancy. Maybe it’s done to prevent confusion between raising the dead and resurrection
Or just to move the body, it drains away as much energy what still lingers in the body what it just can to decrease the mana requirement for bringing it back.

Perhaps the negative energy used to reanimate the dead also strips away any lingering trace of life, leaving the corpse looking gaunt and pallid?
Or it could just be artistic license on Rich’s part to show that he’s undead and not just a survivor.
