      You had to be pretty wise if *your job* is to get the king to laugh at what you say about him instead of getting beheaded.

        Actually, by law, Jesters were immune to being executed for making fun of the nobility. It was a "remember to be humble" sort of thing, so the kings and such wouldn’t take themselves too seriously.

          Not all kings were noble & good. Of those who weren’t, such a "law" has no jurisdiction or meaning for them.

          But even them had some limits – it wasn't a rare occurence that with one of their jokes on the royal house they go too bold, which leaded them branded as traitors of the throne. Even their "immunity" doesn't defend them from death in those cases.
