I started out giving more credit to The Fox’s version, but by this point we learn that Niko’s is a first-person account. Fox wasn’t actually present for these events.
Both story must be taken with a grain of salt – one wasn't there, so it based on other's tales, but the other might change what happened because of their viewpoint in the matter is not unbiased. A human mind often adapt their memories to their beliefs, so it's easier to accept them as thruth.

Yeah, when a villain tells you their story, you believe them because it's a first-hand account!
