You know your cause has a long way left to go when your sympathizers miss the point.
The central conceit of the marriage equality movement is of course that there are no differences between gay marriages and traditional ones and thus if a traditional marriage would fit the parameters of the curse….
but…if it was a change of title they’d have solved this years go, even renaming the damned castle to "spin on it witch" would fix that. baron "spin on it witch"
You’re giving my characters too much credit for intelligence. That plus the fact that you’re dealing with generations of people who probably don’t take the curse seriously until it happens to them. You can’t teach your children to learn from all your mistakes.
It's weird that Greyfort would be a duchy now. Normally, Lucas would still be Baron of Greyfort while holding the duchy but then he is the Duke of Greyfort now, not of whatever duchy Greyfort belonged to. So I guess that the Baron of Greyfort was a direct vassal to the king, not to any count/earl/whatever or duke and Lucas either was made a (mostly) titular duke with Greyfort being converted into a very small duchy or Greyfort was supplemented with land from different baronies, counties and duchies and converted into a "proper" duchy. Both should normally still mean that the Barony of Greyfort would be the core holding of Lucas' duchy, meaning Lucas would still be Baron (as well as Duke) of Greyfort.
So I guess the barony was dissolved and reconstituted in some other form, effectively abolishing the title (for example, merging several baronies and splitting them into different ones) – such a thing would require a major restructuring of the realm and its holdings. I guess much of the nobility being killed off in a really devastating war and a major rebellion would leave enough land unclaimed and old traditions shaken enough to do it.
If the curse specifies WIFE, then this marriage ought to break it…

At first when I saw the art, I thought it was a guest comic, then I saw what it was about, and realized that you must have banged this one out pretty quick after the news, which brings it right back around to awesome.
Yes, not only did I write it somewhat spontaneously -and at a suggestion from Dungeon Master to be honest- but we’re also travelling, so my normal equipment and even font weren’t accessible to me. I really wanted to get it up this weekend though, so here it is!
Robin and Guesticus are right, both, though it’s no coincidence, rather real life reshaping a subplot on the fly. Lucas and Cadugan are as of now, married.
I am surprised we don’t see Glon there. Lucas certainly considers him and Mrs. Bloodhand to be family. Of course, there are things going on under the mountain, but still… I would have expected one of them to go. I hope the messenger with the news about the wedding day didn’t get captured and converted to Ranna! >.<
There weren’t many angles showing the crowd of guests. In fact, we really only see two shots of the guests close enough to discern identities, and one with generic-ish figures behind Cadugan. I think the nicely tunic’d chest to the right of that shot of Cadugan could be Glon’s nicely tunic’d chest.
However, King Runtherd is behind and to the side of the supreme court just…er, the high priestess…and we can only see those to her right (our left, the side Cadugan is standing upon); we cannot see those to her left (our right, the side Lucas is standing upon)…and it would make sense that King Runtherd would be on Cadugan’s side of things since Cadugan kinda manages the forest for the kingdom.
Glon, as a royal prince of the black mountain peoples and thus virtually as highly-ranked as the human king, would have equal place of pride as a guest, but he’d definitely be over on Lucas’ side, so Runtherd is on the other side to help balance things out.
Either way…the Beholder King did an awesome job inking this down and posting it up in essentially a single day. Thank you, our king; may your gaze be ever benevolent upon us…or at least turned away… 😉
Sadly I had neither the time nor panel space to show more of the guests. I do plan to return to this when the main arc catches up. So while Glon, Mrs B and the Orc princesses are not there, you may be surprised by who did turn up!
Somehow Mrs.Bloodhand seems to me like the Kind of Person who will have a very serious (and loud) talk with Lucas about not inviting her to the wedding. after congratulating him of course….but still.
Not really when you think about it. I pondered this for a little while before writing the strip. Remember Lucas wasn’t invited to Glon’s weddings either. And when Mrs B comes to visit Greyfort it’s uaually on the sly. While Elegrost and The Black Mountain aren’t at war, they’re still not public allies. Orcs still raid from time to time. Ogres and Harpies still capture enslave and eat people who get too close. Openly inviting Orc royals to a wedding where lots of important Humans and Elves are gathering isn’t a popular idea.
Hmm, excellent points. I suspect that there will be some private congratulations by the Bloodhands later. 🙂 You are right, there would have been too much glaring and stress between the "good" rulers and the "evil" rulers if they had been invited, and it should be a happy celebration. That is one diverse family they have going. I can’t wait to see who… or what, Lucas adopts as an heir. 😉 And the Ginsburg cameo was a really nice touch.
I can’t remember, do Glon and Mrs. B know yet, about Lucas being a werewolf? If not, their next family gathering will have some interesting conversations. That is one nice thing about that side of the family, Lucas can reliably assume that they won’t have any problems with his ‘condition’. For that matter, someone should eventually ask Lewie if he has any cure for werewolfism that the, er, younger, human mages don’t know about. (It would also be fun to see a peaceful meeting between Eddy and Lewie. *chuckle*)
Wow, this is the quality of art you can do at the last minute? o_O
Just kidding, have enjoyed the ‘rough’ art you have been doing for the last 15 years, it’s kinda your signature style 😀
Très beau, Rich. Great bonus page. I hope you get a chance to revisit this scene later with a few more details (such as reactions from a couple other characters). But, even so, this is a really sweet stand-alone.
I’ve been fighting this fight for over 35 years now. The fight itself isn’t over, but it IS sort of a "Waterloo-shed" event, a major battle won that has likely determined where & how the war will end.
For those who think of this in terms of it being a "gay" rights victory …. you are wrong.
It is, and has always been, a HUMAN rights victory.
This was a wonderful surprise! Congratulations, Lucas and Cadugan, and best wishes for many happy years, together. Thank you, Rich and DM, this was great!
Uh, what about the curse?
Thier situation doesn’t fit the parameters of the original curse. They’re playing the odds.
You know your cause has a long way left to go when your sympathizers miss the point.
The central conceit of the marriage equality movement is of course that there are no differences between gay marriages and traditional ones and thus if a traditional marriage would fit the parameters of the curse….
I suppose it’s the thought that counts.
The original curse falls on the spouse of the one who holds the title "Baron Greyfort." Lucas is a Duke. What were you thinking I meant?
Thought it affected the wife and childbearer
Ah, so that’s what.
For a moment here I was worried Lucas didn’t care enough about Cadugan’s life…
but…if it was a change of title they’d have solved this years go, even renaming the damned castle to "spin on it witch" would fix that. baron "spin on it witch"
You’re giving my characters too much credit for intelligence. That plus the fact that you’re dealing with generations of people who probably don’t take the curse seriously until it happens to them. You can’t teach your children to learn from all your mistakes.
Oooh, better be careful that nobody calls him "Baron" by accident.
The way titles usually work, he’s still Baron, just Duke too and gets called that because it’s a higher rank…
It's weird that Greyfort would be a duchy now. Normally, Lucas would still be Baron of Greyfort while holding the duchy but then he is the Duke of Greyfort now, not of whatever duchy Greyfort belonged to. >no differences
Does Chtier know about "no difference". Priest sad "i declare you married".
If (marriage==true) then wife.curse_start(Cadugan) endif;
After this official marriage, Cadugan became wife(goddess can think so). So curse will work! bad idea!
If the curse specifies WIFE, then this marriage ought to break it…

thank you for this one mate
My pleasure!

Is this canon or just a shout out to #LoveWins?
My money is on both.
Both, just happy coincidence they aligned at the same time
Cad and Luke have always been a couple
Robin and Guesticus are right, both, though it’s no coincidence, rather real life reshaping a subplot on the fly. Lucas and Cadugan are as of now, married.
Would say ‘about time’, but that kinda implies it was rushed, when it’s more a case of ‘finally’ 😀

So do you still plan a return to this so we can see who did show up?
Somehow Mrs.Bloodhand seems to me like the Kind of Person who will have a very serious (and loud) talk with Lucas about not inviting her to the wedding. after congratulating him of course….but still.
She’ll understand.

Wouldn’t stop Arachne, but she wouldn’t be interested in going (unless she heard that D-cups had been sighted and was attending)

Waaaait… That’s a Ginsburg cameo, isn’t it? 😀
It is!
Notorious RBG!
I knew it!!!
Well, she _is_ listed in the cast 😀
Even though I’m straight, I think this is a step in the right direction, For the human race. Maybe we’ll grow up a little more……….
Agreed.
*Squeeeee!* What a great page to wake up to!
😀
This. Full of win. Thank you.
You’re welcome. And thanks. 🙂
Wow, this is the quality of art you can do at the last minute? o_O
Just kidding, have enjoyed the ‘rough’ art you have been doing for the last 15 years, it’s kinda your signature style 😀
This is my first completely digital page….I think…
Wait, is that a uni-bunny on the High Priestess’ cravat? o_O
The Al’mi’raj -unicorn bunny- is the holy symbol of Ch’Thier.
Très beau, Rich. Great bonus page. I hope you get a chance to revisit this scene later with a few more details (such as reactions from a couple other characters). But, even so, this is a really sweet stand-alone.

Thank you, Rich.
Agreed, it is about ALL couples being able to have the same rights to lose half of their belongings in marriage 😛
And it is no business of anyone else who wants to get married
You’re welcome!
Okay, who wants to see a double wedding when this mess with Ranna is dealt with, between Arachne & Jais and Charlie & Lotharia?
Haha, that’s a whole lot of evil and stupid. Could be hilarious.
Both couples would deserve it (if they all survive)
On behalf of the U.S.A., Thanks! The more people who believe in marriage, the better off many couple will be.
Agreed! You’re welcome!
… Elegrost is under the jurisdiction of USA supreme court? Whoa … 🙂
Congratulation to the USA people anyway. May your journey to 21th century continue.
Can see Meegs has a new hat, did she get herself a good replacement for Zora?
<3 <3 <3 !!! Yaaaaaay!
Unrelated to the comic but… Is it just for me that the RSS feed stopped updating?
The comic itself is great!
This was a wonderful surprise! Congratulations, Lucas and Cadugan, and best wishes for many happy years, together. Thank you, Rich and DM, this was great!
Awesome! Timely! Love it.
oh, my gods! I am so glad I saw this, thank you so much! it’s amazing.
Nifty Keen ,.,.,,. Way to cap A great thread! 😉
Been a fan for a long time now, just wanted to say, this is awesome.
Not only that, Lucas is only adopted, not a TRUE Greyfort. The curse will not affect him, our favorite Half-orc on the other hand.
Ooo yeah, you would think Ch’thier and slash or the ghosts would know that…
This is beautiful. Thank you for this comic. It’s really awesome : ) Made my day
Your a wonderful, wonderful human being. 🙂
Excellent!
The official performing the marriage looks familiar…
Read the cast list 😀
Excellent work! This is phenomenal!
(wait, did I miss the part where Glitterbranch escaped the Drow?)
Glitterbranch was never a prisoner, you are thinking of his sister, Dewcup
Yeah, that tale was never relayed… though it will probably be covered in a flashback at some time.
Finally found it. I archived dived too far back. I don’t know how I missed it to begin with.
Have no appropriate words for his, so I’m just gonna cheer a bit if that’s alright. *squeeeeeeee*
… Now the woodland creatures celebrate, especially the four-legged fox…
AWWWWW!!!
