While I agree that, when faced with the army on the other end, Jone is the better option, she’s standing right next to the portcullis of a gate that allows maybe 5 people to exit side-by-side, and her sword has a rather massive range. It’s bound to be a meat grinder anyway.
Something I never understood is why the clothes get turned to stone too. Shouldn’t it just be the target? And what would happen if a medusa stared into a camera? They did a thing for old fashioned ones in Harry Potter with the Basalisk, where it petrified instead of killing, but what about a digital one?
Probably depends on the type. If you're using a simple viewfinding lens, then I expect you'd get stoned same as normal, if you're using a screen as a preview I doubt anything would happen, and if using a DSLR then you're looking at it through a mirror. Which is safe.

On here own Jone cannot kill hundreds of people. She can only attack one at once. If they all swarm past her, only a few will get killed.
Swarming her with the best orc warriors didn’t work when Gruumsh tried it, though…
