2915 A Glimpse Into The Future

Chapter: Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Crossover
Location: Gloombelt Mountains, The Ancient Ruins
YAFGC is now entering a new era, though it’s not going go quite as …astray… as this strip (and the new storyline) seem to be implying.
This story’s going to be a bit of an experiment, a diversion, but once its done we’ll go back to more formula YAFGC. (I’m not going all Doctor Who in YAFGC -again- promise.)
Art by me, of course, with some art by Ron Bender… more on that next time.

What we have here is a 4-4-0 locomotive. Something from the 1860s. Though the cars are from a much later date. Wonder if it is a boxcar full of munitions, and a car load of troops. Or it could be a load of clueless tourists on a weekend excursion.
If that train contains the equivalent of American Civil War soldiers I will be a very happy reader.
When I saw this strip, I immediately compared this train with the train from CameoComics. Looked different. Well, today there is new CameoComics refering YAFGC. So, yes, it WILL be crossover.
… or was I comparing it to how it looked on Magical Misfits or something?
Oh great now there is another web comic that I have to become addicted to! Thanks hkmaly. What many does that make? About 30 that I have bookmarked. Starting to read CameoComics now. he he he
There actually were 4-4-0s still in use up until the 1920s on branch lines laid with light rail that hadn’t been upgraded for decades. The boxcar, though, does look more appropriate for the 1950s-1960s. The heavyweight passenger car could still be a match for the 1920s.
Doctor Brown? Doctor Emmett Brown to the white courtesy phone, please…
If this site supported upvotes, I’d give as many as I could to you, you glorious bastard. 😀
That’s what I was thinking!
And now for something completely different
"After which it went into a bit of a decline." – sounds like a big part of the magic disappeared at approximately this time of the main story. Did Ranna "drink" that, I wonder. Or maybe it was used up by both sides.
Was the fourth age when Ranna and her sister went to sleep? If so they’re definitely the cause of the magic back and forth.
… damn. Another comics which we know will end badly. Although at least it’s not as bad as not having ANY magic left and stopping to believe it existed.
From the casual way he’s talking about spell breakdown, magical bursts and dimensional portals, I guess in the future era magic is alive and kicking, and familiar to the viewers of a general historical/educational/entertainment TV show. Perhaps just not quite as generous and ubiquitous as in the present era.
And that is 1500 to 2000 years of a ‘bit’ of a decline. So far the comic has taken 10 years to cover… what, the same time in-universe?
So we’ve probably got at *least* another 100 years or so before the world as portrayed in the comic changes drastically to an industrial/magical one. Probably more like 1,000.
I’m sure Rich Morris will get us there eventually, though 😉
A bit more than ten years, when we went back to see "What happened to Dewcup?" we rewound from the "present" by thirteen years.
All hail the immortal Rich-ghost-in-the-shell-Morris!
Casey Jones, you’re on the wrong track!
Incoooooming! 😮
A steam engine that travels through dimensions, quite a Misfit in the YAFGC comic world
Nice Time Team references. Man, I used to love that programme.
Oh lordy….are the wood elves going to use this technology to go all steampunk? Ridiculously fast advancement, coming out of the forest!
Also is that digger half orc? Good to see the loss of magic doesn’t mean humans become the only species around.
Thought you meant the machine in panel three at first 😛
Actually, I suspect that it’s a halfling.
Halflings don’t have pointed ears in this comic I thought? Plus the nose seems more orcish.
No, that’s his actual nose in real life, all Rich did was give him the ears
Yay! I loved that TV show. 🙂 this is brilliant XD
So ranna destroying the mountain was the literal end of the 7th age?
Shades of "Time Team."
You have my faith, Rich. I’ll ride this pony through any vortex and over any Astral Rainbow you care to lead ….
Feel free to throw a kitchen sink through a Stargate at any point, just to see what happens. 😉
Gen. Hammond: Colonel, what do you think you are doing?!
Col. O’Neill: On my back-swing?!
Can you have this kind of reality breakdown without a certain Timelord turning up to help fix the problem ?
After the last time he showed up? He ain’t going back _ever_ 😛
When was this?
*totally no memory*
http://yafgc.net/comic/1039-arachne-who/
Shouldn’t there be a landscape archaeologist arguing with the official arcaeological dowsers about exactly where to place a trench somewhere?
Totally recognized Baldrick and the rest of his team 😀
Nice one Rich 🙂
Bra-vo!
Down the rabbit hole we go.
Ridin’ that train… high on arcane…
PC Jones you need a… natch twenty!
Do you hear that whistle down the line?
I figure that it’s Engine Number 49
She’s the only one that’ll sound that way
On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe
(sorry, the lyrics got stuck in my head from watching Harvey Girls last night, and this was just too well timed XD; )
The world will be saved by Steam POWER!!!!!!!
As Arte Johnson used to say on "Laugh-In," "Verrrrrrrrry interesting." 🙂
Rich, if that’s the train from Harry Potter…
*remembers Din-Sea Princess arc*
I’m going to be very interested in where this is going.
Not a Harry Potter train, not the right type of engine or engine number
Found your webcomic in a post about the 10 year anniversary. Congratulations!
The plots are really good and when read through without pauses, one can definitely see, how you set up a story arc months ahead.
I love how you let those kids grow up and get their own storys, when they seemed like filler comics at the beginning.
One thing makes me wonder though….did Lucas forget about the curse? Or is it no longer aplicable because of the promotion?
Hmm, not so sure I’m liking the turn of events or the direction things appear to be going, but 10 years of awesome has bought some leeway, so I’ll definitely be sticking around for a while to see how it turns out. I’m just not too optimistic at the moment.
TIME TEAM! I learned so much from those twenty years.
Weeeeeererrrrr
Sure hope most of the residents of the Black Mountain were outside when this happened.
Still, it looks like a number of our favorite characters are pretty much dead after this story.
That was a pretty big blast. Assuming some realism, I would sadly expect most people near the mountain also died, although I hope *some* were lucky (perhaps they were shielded behind some other rocks.) Then again, characters in this comic don’t always die realistically.
For a moment I was thinking "at least the beholder king had to survive so Bob can usurp him" – but then I checked, and the prophecy just said Bob would succeed him, and it was just the king who sort of assumed there’d be a fight. Perhaps Bob or Bob2 is now the king because they are the *only* surviving beholders.
I suspect that at some point this timeline will cease to be.
Assuming any kind of realism whatsoever, a significant chunk of the continent would have been leveled. The closest real-world equivalents to this kind of kaboom I can think of would be the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, which utterly obliterated all life on several islands, the 1815 eruption of Tambora (which caused the Year Without Summer a continent away) and (yep, another volcano) the so-called Minoan Eruption, the event that turned the island of Thera into the ring of far smaller islands now known as Santorin and which may have been one of the main inspirations for the myth of Atlantis (because it almost certainly wiped out a major civilization of the time).
This wasn’t a volcanic explosion, though. The mountain was blasted apart from outside.
What about Mount St. Helens? o_O
St. Helens wasn’t in the same category as the ones I listed. For one thing, the mountain’s still there :P.
(There is such a thing as a Volcanic Explosivity Index. What this would be equivalent to is a type 6-7. Mt. St. Helens was a 5, comparable in effective kaboom to the eruption of Vesuvius that wiped out Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Yellowstone caldera’s last big eruption, by the way, was an 8.)
In any case…I know this wasn’t a volcanic eruption, but it still applied enough energy to effectively wipe a mountain from the map. Where this energy came from, above or below, isn’t particularly important (well, possibly the attack from above would cause even more collateral damage due to more energy being needed to achieve the same result from that angle).
It didn’t remove a mountain from the map. Reread the second panel. There was a mountain range there 15 centuries ago. So the explosion wiped out an area comparable to, say, the Grand Tetons or the Black Hills (since you mentioned the Yellowstone Caldera).
I think we’re looking at a pretty definite 7.
Well, "mountain range" is a bit ambiguous, and can cover a wide variety of sizes. Yes, it could be on the scale of the Tetons, or we could be talking something as small as the Sutter Buttes (to give you an idea, you can bike a loop around the whole range in a few hours).

Well, consider how far into the future this page is, doubt anyone but the drow characters would still be alive 😛
Or maybe Bob, if the senile Beholder King was any indication
Does this mean Bob and Gren, the two very first to characters, are dead?
Bob may still be alive, but Gren would be long gone (goblins are lucky if they die of old age around 70, maybe 200)
I don’t think the questions about who’s dead refer to the time of the broadcast. Anyway, in the "present" time Bob and Gren were last seen with Meegs, far from the mountain: http://yafgc.net/comic/2855-haulback/
Oh right, forgot about that (and it was just a joke, putting things in perspective, still hoping they will come to a door, knock on it only to have Mr Ix open the door for another foul-tasting snack 😀 )
I know where this is going (sort of). I’m friends with Ron Bender IRL.
This is going to be SO cool!!
There are still going to be lots of boobies, right?? Elvish, dark gray Drow, Human, Harpy… or just sentient Frank Cho style floating boobies, right?
Ooh Look! Boobies!
https://db.tt/6KizqHPV
I vote in favor of bare boobies. Add Sphynx, Orc, Goblin. Firm and perky.
Now arriving at station.
I love that opening, the way it frames the context and almost tragically reminds us that everything dies.
t!
Where they came from, they didn’t need roads. Although it looks like this first trip, they still needed train tracks…
😉
My gosh! Has it been a year already since this happened?!
The archive.org link, which has a larger and more legible version: https://web.archive.org/web/20180304091427/http://yafgc.net/comic/2915-a-glimpse-into-the-future/
The carts are surprisingly intact for a derailed train. I smell plot armor
