Chapter: Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Crossover
Characters: Handler, Maula Bloodhand
Location: The Black Mountain
Scale, Hank, Handler and Gertrude are all visiting us from “Cowboys and Crossovers”
http://cowboysandcrossovers.thecomicseries.com/comics/
Drawn by Ron Bender (Well, when they aren’t being drawn by me, that is…)
Yeah, didn’t seem likely that Maula was going to go for the whole "sit back, rest, and let everyone else save the world".
I don’t think it’s even about saving the world. I’m gettimng more of a ‘Bitches blew up my mountain!’ vibe.
Daughter-in-law in danger, blew up the her home, tried to depose her, tortured her… and there is ass kicking to do.
Stay out of her way, girl be pissed.
There shall be an accounting made & Maula is the tax collector.
"Tried to torture her" is so true.
They failed so miserably, their ‘victim’ fell asleep
And Maula ain’t missing none of that.
Her hair has turned completely white from that stylish black from early years.
Yeah, when did that happen? Was there a story, or is she just getting older?
It’s been like sixteen years in-universe since the comic began. (Most webcomics run *slower* than real time! Rich just has to be different. 😀 )
Actually it’s a well kept secret that…. she um…. she used to dye her hair. Once she became a grandmother -and y’know QUEEN- she felt comfortable letting her true colours known.
Handler just told Maula that there’s a fight… and she wasn’t invited…
Don’t know who to feel sorriest for. The Rannites or the Heroes.
Why would she have left her armor? Was it too dented from many blunt objects (e.g. bits of mountain and assorted rocks)?
I guess after an explosion and a Mountain crushing on it, her armor would not be in a great shape anymore- would it?
And Maula is great in getting the most out of people. When our party of heroes wanted to travel fast, no one thought of Handler. Not even Handler himself 😉
Panel 3: "And they didn’t invite me?"
Panels 3.1-3.9: Maula interrogates Handler on what a "pooka" is, learns he can transform/shapeshift, has him demonstrate a bit, then picks the fastest mount she knows and takes off.
Personally, I think she should have gone with a giant peregrine falcon for dive speed, or a dragon for additional breath weapon and heated seats.
I believe in the legends, a Pooka can only take on shapes with hair or fur…not feathers or scales. The Dinosaur thing was probably a borderline case of weirdness…heh
Handler is from A little more humiliation by JR McCool. in that universe flying polkas are kinda rare. It’s an instinct the polkas have trouble duplicating. Boo and 5 of nine can do. But 5 of 9 has assumed a bird form and rarely if ever returns to Pooka form. 5 of 9 has some issues.
That look… is AWESOME. Because it can mean so many things, but none of them good for people she intends to harm.
I need that panel on a t-shirt.
t!
I can make you a print of it. 🙂
I’ll put it on the fridge when I’m dieting!
t!
Yeah, Handler, you show ’em how it’s done, pooka!
If Scale "Knew Best" she would have adviced Handler on NOT to tell Mr. B she was loosing out on a battle, especially one involving revenger… instead she should have him say "Oh! They went away for blankets and cookies…"
… this is way more fun to watch though! 😀
Panel 3 is awesome
"A furry Pookha with the speed of light.
A hearty Hi Yo Handler
It’s the Lone Orc!"
Yep. Gonna need me one-a them Pookas. (Pookae? Pookata?)
Plural of Pooka is Pookas.
It’s ‘Púca’ (pronounced, ‘PHOO-ka’ at least if it’s the Irish Fae version. (Pooka’s a perfectly good Anglican spelling, though). They’re considered generally benevolent as far as yōkai go. On Samhain, they were said to change to monstrous forms to scare people, but they did no real harm. Those humans bold enough to get on their backs were promised a ‘wild ride.’
There wasn’t any specific limitations in the legends AFAIK, though they very often appeared in tales as goats, hares, or horses with golden eyes. Handler apparently prefers a sheep-ish default. 🙂
But I bet he has a lot of fun as a Warg.
Especially the killer cutsy wargs as bred by Gren’s Uncle Vesch
The púca (Gaelic for spirit/ghost), pooka, phouka, phooka, phooca, puca or púka is primarily a creature of Celtic folklore. Considered to be bringers both of good and bad fortune, they could either help or hinder rural and marine communities. The creatures were said to be shape changers which could take the appearance of black horses, goats and hares. They may also take a human form, which includes various animal features, such as ears or a tail.
Like several Irish Fae, dealing with a pooka depends on the nature of the pooka, though they all do enjoy confusing and terrifying people regardless.
Handler apparently is one of the friendlier pooka. Your *typical* pooka (as in out of many of the Celtic legends) would probably have just eaten Mike when he got mouthy. ^.^
But we may be about to see a more, ahem, traditional side to Handler, now that he’s a Warg and riding the Queen of the Horde into battle!
Just discovered this comic two days ago, binged the entire thing nonstop. i freaking love this comic, i can’t believe given the amount of fantasy comics i read that i haven’t discovered this before now. keep up the excellent work
Thank you!!! And welcome to the readership gang. I hope that I’m still able to keep it funny after 10 years. 🙂
Honestly? it reminds me of a 6 year long D&D campaign i ran when i was a kid. I just hope it doesn’t end the same way…. with the world going up in flames as the fallen goddess kills the world thanks to a main party members betrayal.
Well, considering the way things have been going here lately…
I agree, I hope it doesn’t end that way. But if it’s any comfort at all, this chapter started with a glimpse into YAFGC’s distant future where archaeologists are looking into the remains of the Black Mountain. And I’m keeping track of my history. So much so, in fact, that I’ve got a timeline that reads as far back as the creation of the world and extends way off into a space age future and doesn’t actually have an end. So I’m projecting a whole lot of YAFGC.
I’m getting some big Princess Mononoke vibes from the final panel and I’m all for it.
