Or at least I’d like to say JUST ha, but I must pun (though it’s highly appropriate). Really, part of the great delivery is how deadpan the baroness is.
Finally, a ghost interested in being all spooky and vengeful.
BONUS: hopefully now we get to see how the curse worked, if it was one of those freak accident causers or just did a "nothing fancy, just die" illnesses. I’m curious as to how you do it, Rich.
Depending on the specifics of marriage and related laws in the kingdom, a marriage usually ends with death of a partner, annulment (if unconsummated) or divorce. In jurisdictions which allow polygamy, generally only the man is allowed more than one wife, but not a woman allowed more than one husband. So the only person under the death penalty of the curse will be her first surviving husband as any subsequent "husband" is not legally entitled to marry her until the prior marriage is dissolved, one way or another.
Well, that how it works in our world. In the yafgc-world it may be different. Only Rich knows what are the regulations on such matters there, so she might legally has more than one spouse. If that is not the case, than only her "true" spouse will die, I guess. Which could be the first one, but just as well could be the last one. The more interesting situation though, is if all her marriges remained valid… Maybe we are going to hear about a wierd series of fatal accidents in the Kingdom of Elegrost…
She says she was married and that they were never annulled.
She’s probably still divorced (or widowed, but that doesn’t fit with the rest of what she’s saying).
Well, yes. The thing is, one doesn’t need to marry to have kids, and one doesn’t have to have kids, once one is married. So there are definately a few different outcomes here, depending on how the curse works, whom she married before, how the regulations on such matters work here, and what happened with her husbands. Man, Monday is still so far away, I want to know who is trouble…
It was noted that Charles’ father (a fisherman) ran off sometime before Lucas and Cadugan were married. I don’t think anything was said since about a formal/official end to the marriage, including death.
True, and Cadugan specifically said they were married.
But I think if she was still married she’d be saying so. She’s just saying her previous marriages weren’t annulled. She didn’t spell it out, but she’s certainly implying she’s divorced.
I was actually thinking much the same thing. I don’t know the local marriage/etc. laws governing Greyfort and such, but I did wonder if it counted, and if so then also if they have any issues with polyandry (and possibly polygamy, if she has any prior-but-still-current wives).
That’s nowhere near enough to earn a title like "Mad". Unless it was like a hundred men, women, -and- various domestic animals, -then- she might’ve earned it.
When I was submitting to a writing project about a prognositcation device, they were very firm that they would NOT take submissions in which the device was proven fallible. This was before they’d received even one submission – but they knew several people were gonna try it. The device was ALWAYS right.
I loved that about their direction. Firm commitment to the concept.
So I figure we can trust the curse. Also, for some intuitive reason it just seems to me that the Gloom Patrol would know all the rules, on account of having Passed Beyond n’ all.
I know, Helen has no reason to lie and probably wants the werewolves gone, too.
But what if she is wrong and the curse works on elven law or something?
Also, with Cadugan being married to Lucas, what if that broke the curse? I mean, isn’t Cadugan going to die because of said curse? Or maybe the petrification broke it?
Top quality research Helen!
now I wanna play ‘still alive’ from portal
HA! Just HA! Absolutely great delivery.
Or at least I’d like to say JUST ha, but I must pun (though it’s highly appropriate). Really, part of the great delivery is how deadpan the baroness is.
Yes, quite the lifeless delivery.
A good example of deadpan humor.
Well that didn’t end so well for the lot of them now did it?
Finally, a ghost interested in being all spooky and vengeful.

Note that another angle is that Flannet Hunter might married multiple times, but Baroness Flannet Hunter of Greyfort only married once.
The curse would affect the one who made her Baroness, in short, Niko.
She says she was married and that they were never annulled.
She’s probably still divorced (or widowed, but that doesn’t fit with the rest of what she’s saying).
Well, at last check Glitterbranch was still alive. Not so sure about Taidor’s or Charles’ fathers.
True. She only needs one surviving ex-spouse for her concern to make sense. She could be both widowed AND divorced.
Well, yes. The thing is, one doesn’t need to marry to have kids, and one doesn’t have to have kids, once one is married. *who is in trouble…

Plot twist!! And now you have to suffer your wife for all eternity
"Baroness Mad Helen II"… With a name like that, you gotta know people are going to beg for her backstory…
She married and divorced at least one person specifically so the curse would kill them instead of the person she wanted to marry.
She just told you.
That’s mean.
That’s nowhere near enough to earn a title like "Mad". Unless it was like a hundred men, women, -and- various domestic animals, -then- she might’ve earned it.
So…is she the second Mad Helen (that’s fairly scary) or simply the second Helen and she happened to be mad?
I’m rather curious why Owen doesn’t look all sunken and ghoulish like these other ghosts. Is it because he still has too much "life" in him?
Maybe Owen looks less, well, DEAD, due to having been dead the least amount of time?
Just a guess.
Perhaps they already looked like that when they died, while he was still young and goodlooking when he croaked.
I think it depends on what a life they have lived.
They were overally good or neutral -> Owen
They were mostly evil -> Helen II
Or the ghost’s self-image shapes their appearance. Baron Owen and Baroness Helen are drama queens; they HAVE to look sunken and ghoulish.
"Your father has always been a wrinkled old man in his heart. He was just hiding in a younger man’s body most of his life."
– Sara Greenhilt.
He is not the only one who is not ghoulish. Look at these strips:

http://yafgc.net/comic/3092-a-morning-surprise/
Hm, looks like the same guy both times, but he isn’t in the character lists.

t!
inda makes sense that the curse would only count those acknowledged as spouse after the title is conferred.
Wife’s been getting prickly on me eyes!

Lucas was not the baron at the time of their wedding. He was the duke.
The curse specifically targets the spouse of the baron.
