Seeing how Runt set out to rescue Alaria, I thought it was stupid and foolhardy, but I have to admit that he had very good reasons to try to rescue her despite everybody’s advice.
If he listened, it wouldn’t have changed anything, she would still be rescued by Thomas*, but if it was Runt to rescue her, it’s Runt she would be grateful to.
Now that he tried, there’s a chance to eliminate Vivay (not necessarily claim Castle Elegrost), which is significant since she won’t have any legitimate claim to the throne (however deranged she is).
But boy, Runt is really unlucky in love. Unless that last panel in the previous comic was a joke, but it was categorically stated it’s not.
Even though he’s not the rightful king of Elegrost, I’m almost sympathetic with him now, he really went through a lot of troubles in his life, and I’m really hoping for a happy ending for him.
It is debatable who is the rightful king of Elegrost. If we say, Eddie has more right to determine it than anybody else, and assume that his spell on the axe did work as it was intented, than Fang is the rightful king. If we say, the entire nobility of Elegrost has more weight in the decesion making than Eddie alone, than Karak was the rightful king (which would make his wife, eventually Hogga the rightful ruler now). But in the end, it will be the people who decide. Not many did follow Karak, and even less would have followed Fang. There are no kings, where people don’t let themselves to be ruled. Runtherd united the elves and the humans, than led a rebellion against the actual tyrant/king. He earned the crown not by magic or turnier, but by his heroic actions. The people of Elegrost are willing to follow him, not because Eddie told them so, but because of Runtherd himself. That gives him more right to rule than Karak or Fang ever had.
If by "people" you mean "soldiers", then yes. Ordinary people didn’t have that much say in history about who rules them. However, no king lasted long without support of army.
"Soldiers" weren't really a thing in the medieval period. After the fall of the roman empire and before the military reforms of the renaissance, during wartime the common men of the kingdoms were levied to fight when it was needed.
Turg is heroic and won’t pass up a chance to show off. And he’s not evil as such, I don’t think there was ever a moment in the comic where he would be doing something actively evil.
Just pointing out here that Turg has no real truck with the whole Rannite/Ch’Their thing. He lives in an isolated pyramid in the desert with the love of his life and his kids. He’s only here because some old friends needed a taxi.
Nope, didn’t see t!’s comment, wasn’t there yet when I left mine. I get what they / you meant, admittedly.
That leaves the point of Vivay being disgustingly handsy, and showing how EVIL someone is by making them a molester is still a bit… well, hammy. Not to say it’s out of place, though. Seems very in-character with the way we’ve seen her behave in earlier arcs.
Oh okay. Just that this particular wording: "showing how EVIL someone is by making them a molester is still a bit… well, hammy." Sounded like you were trying to call me out, rather than the character herself. If that’s the case than, I agree. She’s a real moustache twirler that one. But if you’re calling me a ham well….. you haven’t seen me on stage yet, YAFGC is positively SUBTLE.
Hahahah, I like that. But, going back over it…. does it retroactively still look chaotic? Or does it make sense? (It makes perfect sense to me, for the record.)
Somewhat I get the feeling, Turg is not necessarily there to rescue Runtherd. Turg might not be ‘evil’, but he is not exactly ‘good’ either. And Runt did take his son to a highly dangerous place…
@Rich
I don’t know what did you put up earlier, this strip or the last panel of the previous one, but I think that picture could have made a strip of its own. It wouldn’t have been the first one-panel strip, so it could have been the one for today, or Monday/Wednesday/etc, depending on where would it have broken the flow of the comic and where not. Obviously I don’t know what you have in store, and whether would have been a better point to upload it; it was just a thought I had.
I put the additional panel up yesterday before this one was posted. I considered putting it up today instead of this one, but decided that I didn’t actually want to break it up.
Sorry if you got them in the wrong order, but anyone going through on a reading blitz will get them they way they were intended.
Oh, I don’t think the order of that panel and this strip really matters, storywise it is not confusing regardless which one one reads first. As I said, it was just a thought I had, what in fact, I had only after reading the comments. It seemed to eventually cause other kinds of misunderstandings, that might could have been avoided. I know you already cleared that, but I can’t tell what others think or did think, so after some hesitation I decided to share the idea. It was a "might not be necessary, but won’t do any harm" comment. At least, it was meant like that. ^^
Vivay is so calm discussing her plans on some bad thing happen to her own child… not actually threat to her powerlust but little baby she could just take and raise him to be obeying and loyal.
It isn’t too evil even for her, is it?
Well, we don’t know that Vivay actually intends any harm to the kid. We do know that she takes pleasure in making Runt THINK she means the kid harm, and likely intends Runt to die knowing he failed to do a damned thing about it.
And THAT is perfectly in character for our dear Lady Vivay.
A good lie is one of yes-that-sure-could-happen type. Pretenting to be too evil to be true is less scary and effective.
But… oh yes, it is Runt. There is no actual reason to play carefully, it’s ok to just relax and have fun!
"And furthermore, dear brother-in-law, I will go back in time and retroactively change this wondrous utopia in which we currently live into a blasted warscape under dire seige by Ranna and her minions."
"Oh no! Vivay is going to retroactively change….AAAAH! Sweet Ch’thier, she already DID!"
"A minotaur’s here and you’re gonna be in trouble!"
Hmm, doesn’t really scan. And, Tehrasha, "Kentucky Fried Movie" is one of my favorites (especially for "A Fistful of Yen").
I don’t ink these. The old old strips were done in black pencil and scanned in as is. I later learned how to fiddle with levels in Photoshop to give it a cleaner effect. Now I do the roughs in red pencil, darken the good lines in black pencil and use Photoshop to deepen the contrast. So they do look inked-ish, but at no point do I trace over the lines in either ink or digital line.
That… isn't how inheritance works, and it wouldn't matter even if it was. With the Rannites in charge, it's whoever is on top in *their* power structure that matters. What's not clear is if that is indeed her, if she *is* high up in the Rannite ranks, or if the Rannites are having some fun with her; I don't see anything snakey about her, and there's no reason to think that they wouldn't play their evil mind games on her just because she's evil too.
Taurus ex machina!
He probably didn’t come down on a machine.
But he is Comin’ Down Hard.
t!
Okay then, Taurus ex fore confrigendo.
That sounded awesome even before I looked it up.
t!
So more like Taurus en Murrina Emporia?
My first thought after seeing Turg was that he had been standing there the whole time and at that moment decided to raise his hands and BLAM
And who knows what might happen next! Why what if something terrible were to happen to me? Why… I wouldn’t become Queen Regnant!
OH YEAH!!!! Coming in like the Kool-aid Man.
Good choice.
I was thinking BA:
"These men promptly escaped from a castle dungeon to the Elegrost underground. Today, still wanted by the Rannites… "
Vivay’s plan is *not* coming together.
t!
you literally made my day with this reference.
now all I see is Fang playing Maddog to Turg’s BA
Ah, yes! And playing Hannibal we would have…well, that is…erm. Yeah.
I think I see why this world is always in so much trouble. Pity the fools.
Like a bull in a …torture chamber
That was my first impression as well.
Uh-OH!
SOMEbody’s in TROUBLE!!
Angry Turg is Angry
To paraphrase a 70’s TV show, "Lady Vivay, don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry."
Yes let out all your plans and then die…
She’s doing a monologue. Classic villain mistake. Turg has nice timing.
It’s a mistake if you’re delaying a kill.
All she was killing here was time, waiting for something she didn’t know was not on its way.
t!
Keep dreaming, Vivay.

Why is it ‘unlucky’ that the woman Runt set out to rescue has escaped from the Ranites? I’d call that good luck on her part.
I think that is the point. Lucky for Alaria. Unlucky for Runt.
Sure. But it still makes Runt unlucky in love. She was rescued by Thomas who had a heartbreaking crush on her and is now her fiancé.
I really wonder who Runt will end up with and whether he actually will end up with anyone or if this becomes a running gag.
Actually, I’m kind of surprised that Turg didn’t just take his kid and just leave Runt behind.
Long as we’re here, might as well re-take the castle.
If anyone could do it single-handedly, Turg would be the one.
t!
"If I don’t rescue king-boy while I’m here, then some idiot back at the temple will probably convince one of my OTHER kids to come do it."
In Germany one could say now:
"Oh scheiße, die Bullen!"
:’D Made my day, einfach weil es so unglaublich flach war.
Flachwitze sind meine Spezialität 😀
"While we’re waiting, why don’t I monologue like the worst cliché villain about my upcoming atrocities, all the while being uncomfortably hands-on with you? That fine with you? Perfect."
Did you see t!’s comment above? I’ll paraphrase/quote it for you.
"It’s a [cliche] if you’re delaying a kill.
All she was killing here was time, waiting for something she didn’t know was not on its way.
t!"
Nope, didn’t see t!’s comment, wasn’t there yet when I left mine. I get what they / you meant, admittedly.

You’re saying I’m a ham, then? Or that you object to my evil character being handsy? I’m not sure what you’re trying to tell me.
No, I’m saying Vivay is a ham. And I’m not objecting to anything.
Oh okay. Just that this particular wording: "showing how EVIL someone is by making them a molester is still a bit… well, hammy." Sounded like you were trying to call me out, rather than the character herself. If that’s the case than, I agree. She’s a real moustache twirler that one. Taurus, too soon! Let the kid have some torture to build character before you rescue him.
(I’m not even kidding; stupidity on that scale deserves a harsh, visceral lesson when the subject will be responsible for a whole friggin’ kingdom.)
Hold that thought, Archangel.
Hey T-Chall – how d’you like that arm in Panel 1?
t!
It’s in the way! ?
Perhaps Turg will tear it off for you.
t!
Nah, it doesn’t have to be that drastic. A "gentle" shove will be fine.
One thing I’ve learned here, this plot is much like a football bouncing around, you never really know where it will bounce off to next.
Hahahah, I like that. But, going back over it…. does it retroactively still look chaotic? Or does it make sense? (It makes perfect sense to me, for the record.)
Could someone please direct me to the strip that shows Thomas rescuing Alaria? I can’t seem to find it.
https://yafgc.net/comic/3264-shut-the-back-door/
Last strip is the only reference to it. You haven’t missed anything. It all happened ‘offscreen’ as it were.
Maybe he missed the last panel, just like I did.
Thanks for the clarification!
Zill: "On the bright side, the boss has more to worry about right now than who let Alaria escape."
Somewhat I get the feeling, Turg is not necessarily there to rescue Runtherd. Turg might not be ‘evil’, but he is not exactly ‘good’ either. And Runt did take his son to a highly dangerous place…

Oh sure, no problem. 🙂
Or a Minotaur could bust in.
Who knows?
Aw, c’mon, let’s stay realistic here.
Reinforcement has arrived & Vivay, worst mother ever.
To quote the old 80’s Data East fighting/wrestling game *Mutant Fighter* (*Death Brade* in Japan): "KNOW THE AUTHORITY OF MY HORNS!"
Go Turg!
Vivay is so calm discussing her plans on some bad thing happen to her own child… not actually threat to her powerlust but little baby she could just take and raise him to be obeying and loyal.

Hah! Interesting plan!
"Big Jim Slade!" [/obscure]
Ummmmm, signs look like the answer is no.
A very painful and likely a very final no.
"A minotaur’s here and you’re gonna be in trouble!"
Hmm, doesn’t really scan. And, Tehrasha, "Kentucky Fried Movie" is one of my favorites (especially for "A Fistful of Yen").
pfffft XD
Are those wiggle/movement lines around his crotch in panel 2?
XD XD
Hahah, kinda looks like that.. but then, tied down like that there isn’t a lot else he can move!
Perhaps I’m a dumbass, but I just noticed someone inked this.
I remember reading you saying no inks for more productivity. What happened?
If you mean the lines under the finished product, that’s his distinctive style, it has always been there
I don’t ink these. The old old strips were done in black pencil and scanned in as is. I later learned how to fiddle with levels in Photoshop to give it a cleaner effect. God this is amazing. I love this so much. Sorry I cant give actual criticism. I’m just so happy to be reading again!
