Well, that’s going to be mix feelings all around. Column A, it’s wonderful you’re here to help us and your family and all. Column B, you’re bein here means we are in for a serious shitstorm worse than any before. And what’s happened up to now…
Hmm… Well I had to look up "Doom Slayer" and my research lead me to a sequel/reboot or something of the videogame Doom. So if this is what you’re referring to, I hope it’s just you and I can’t imagine why you’re getting that vibe.
Yep, that’s the one – in the 2016 "reboot" they made the doom guy an ancient warrior that’s cursed/blessed/chose to fight the demons in hell for a few eons, and he’s so proficient, angry and cruel at it that he near wiped them out, and became a boogeyman to them – the demons themselves dubbed him "Doom Slayer".
They only defeated him by setting a trap, dropping a mountain on him, and turning it into a tomb/temple where he’s "trapped in eternal suffering", and stuck up warning signs so a group of horny teenage demons don’t accidentally set him free… But a new dimension of humans find the temple and dig up your sarcophagus.
The game starts with you waking up still chained to the just opened sarcophagus, ANGRY and surrounded by zombie cultists. After smashing a few skulls you quickly learn there’s a new hell invasion, and tens of thousands have already perished.
Angry intensifies.
So they’re both ancient warriors of legend, both wake up ANGRY on/under their monument, and both wake up in the middle of world ending evil cultist shit storm that they have to clean up. Those vibes.
Not try to imply that you’re coping the Doom Slayer "character" in any way, apologies if it came across that way.
And while I have your attention – love your work man, been reading since the days when Glon still thought he was a half elf.
Oh no no offence taken. I was just totally baffled at the connection. I get a /lot/ of people making connections with things they’ve experienced but of which I know absolutely nothing and asking me if I took inspiration from them or if I was paying homage to them or -if they’re being really belligerent- saying things like: "Looks like BK’s been watching a little too much GoT!" And to be fair, yes this comic pays a lot of homage to things that /I/ grew up with or loved, but the context is completely internal. So I get confused a lot, especially when people assume I know what they’re talking about.
"Oh, hey BK, did you base this whole plotline on the JKLW32 series? It’s just like when Piff the Skewk jumped on Polliwaker from behind and clicked the dingler four times, isn’t it?"
I’m old and stupid and my references are often old and stupid. Please be kind. Back in my day television was free and you watched whatever they fed you between commercials, so we were all on the same page. But now you pick and choose what you watch or play individually and you have to pay ridiculous amounts for it, so our experience varies a LOT from person to person.
And thanks for sticking around that long, OrbyBird! Glad you still find something to enjoy in YAFGC after all these years!
I loved watching the tv repairman fiddle with the vacuum tubes when the tv was on the fritz. I was only 7, but he ~saw me, showed me the tubes, and how to seat them better. (Ours were loose. Imagine ~~that!! Lol) So, at age 7, I’d repair that tv before mom would give up, call the guy.
Not much difference from the kids nowadays "fixing" devices, hmm?
And yes! Thanks for this gift you give us so often… and have been gifting us for a very long time. ❤️
Hahahah, I hadn’t thought of that! Actually those are a series of nicknames Eric (I) was given during his Crusade against the evil god Abynn. He was the first to take up arms against the god and the leader of the party. He lead them in their Quest to find the 13 artifacts that would be needed to send Abynn back to his evil realm and he was the last to obtain an artifact (The Sword, "Courage"). He was also the first King of Drostardy, but obviously not the last. In that context yeah, it’s a pretty awful name! Hahah
Oh I’m so glad you explained. I was afraid the prophecy being fulfilled was the first king is also the last because he comes back & takes over, but whether or not he wins, the kingdom gets destroyed so he’s the last king because no more kingdom after that. Another longtime reader, since around the time Bob and Gren got their own lair. Ah, lighthearted days, eh?
This is NOT how you use a prophecy. If you’re the living king, you want to work your ass off to keep the dead one from needing to wake up and take your job back. You keep the revenant in reserve, so he gets up when you can’t win… not because you didn’t bother to deal with things and now he HAS to.
I must say, this is an interesting twist and an ingenous (eventual) solution to the Ranna-arc. I mean, our heroes had some succes, but the situation still did look rather grim. Now we just see here the second person appearing, who has been prophesied to lead and win the battle against a great darkness. 🙂
Had to look closely, only really one modificationing: "First King of Drostardy", originally it was "First King" "of Drostardy", now it’s "First King of" "Drostardy"
The extra lines on the plaque could be passed off as simply being cut off in the original
He is mad because he hit the bottom of the statue at first
You would think, if he was foretold to rise and all that, that they would have given him a nice tomb/mausoleum with a door.
Does this mean he’ll get paid more?
Huh. Well. That’s gonna be a fun surprise for his grandson.
Might be considerably further ago then ‘grandson’, if there were any descendants not named ‘Eric’ in between!
Y’know. I never considered that.
SSSSSHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTT!
Seriously, great strip!

Oh, crud puppies! It just got real people! (As real as you can get in a Fantasy Gamer comic, that is…)
-shiiiiiiit
You had to jinx it
Well, would you look at that. And he doesn’t even look like a zombie.
And ya know, he does NOT look happy to be awake in the slightest…
Grandpa is AWAKE! And he is PISSED!
Aaaaand…. the shit hits the fan.
Anybody else getting Doom Slayer vibes, or is it just me?

Did you have to get up and change the channel as well? I had that burden as well, growing up.
And the rabbit ears that had to be adjusted every time a heavy vehicle passed outside

Eric: WHAT IN THE CINNAMON FRENCH FRICK IS GOING ON?!
"The First and the Last"? o_O
Yeah, that don’t sound good for a dynasty, at least, not one you hope would last

Any chance we’ll ever see more of these events? 🙂
I was reminded of the US Army Pathfinder School: "first in, last out".
I was reminded of my father-in-law’s motto "first out the taxi…last at the bar"
Oh I’m so glad you explained. I was afraid the prophecy being fulfilled was the first king is also the last because he comes back & takes over, but whether or not he wins, the kingdom gets destroyed so he’s the last king because no more kingdom after that. Is it just me, or does it seem like Lil Eric ‘sees’ more than he should?
Li’l Eric is wise beyond his years, as his mum and auntie can attest.
"Gods drat it–I was having such a nice dream!"
His grandpa had risen from hell after his son said the incantation.
No beard?! Tch, he has just lost a lot of charisma points XD
He’s really angry because of the capital H in "who" on his tombstone. He’s going to have a word with the stonecarver…. or his grandkids anyway.
Can’t you damn kids keep the world in one piece without me?
Exactly what I was thinking. Rich captured the face of a guy who was forced to break off his vacation because of a phone call
Oh! Wow!
Revenant Ahoy! It’s about to get real!
Worthy opponent to Jone? 😉
I was thinking that!
t!
Anybody else perk up when Runtherd was listed among the ‘good people’?
t!
It made me feel a bit sad, given Turg’s furious denouncement of Runt, to be honest… 🙁
Has enough time passed so they would know if Runt survived or not, or even that he went to save her? *fingers crossed*
Figuring it was around about the same time, same with Lewie and Ata
This is NOT how you use a prophecy. If you’re the living king, you want to work your ass off to keep the dead one from needing to wake up and take your job back. You keep the revenant in reserve, so he gets up when you can’t win… not because you didn’t bother to deal with things and now he HAS to.
he looks pretty good for a corpse.
Eric I was also known as HE WHO MOISTURIZES,but there wasn’t room for it on the monument.
t!
t! wins. I can’t top that.
Eric I had a goodly supply of Oil of O-Laid-to-Rest moisturizer with him.
Thank you T-Chall! I knew someone would run away with it!
At least now they’ll definitely know they’re in danger.
And hey, he kept his promise to return…!
I wonder whether he was in stasis and Ranna’s devouring magical energy is what ended the spell and woke him up.
Lets just hope he okay with his line being mixed with the blood of hobbits.
I must say, this is an interesting twist and an ingenous (eventual) solution to the Ranna-arc. I mean, our heroes had some succes, but the situation still did look rather grim. Now we just see here the second person appearing, who has been prophesied to lead and win the battle against a great darkness. 🙂
AND he’s a god-slayer. And probably not scared of death.
Well, at least the prophecy was accurate.
Cold comfort, I’m sure.
Brilliant costumes there from Lucas and Cadugan. I have no idea how I figured out it wasn’t really Bob and Gren!
I’d also love to see Bob and Gren dressed as Lucas and Cadugan lol 😀
Happy Halloween to you too Rich, and everybody else!! 🙂
DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUN!
Since noone said it yet:
"My grandpa’s back and you’re gonna be in trouble"
"Hey-la-day-la, my grandpa’s back!"
Let’s just hope he slept well or his back might give him problems
Takes two steps, doubles up in pain as his back cracks, and not in a good way 😛
"Now it’s your turn, Grandpa." Took him a while, but he’s here!
His tomb has been slightly modified, though: https://yafgc.net/comic/0297-the-return-of-the-king-no-appologies-to-the-tolkien-estate/
Had to look closely, only really one modificationing: "First King of Drostardy", originally it was "First King" "of Drostardy", now it’s "First King of" "Drostardy"
The extra lines on the plaque could be passed off as simply being cut off in the original
No, the extra lines wouldn't fit on the older version; you can clearly see the bottom corners of the plaque, and there isn't room.
I love the Halloween picture! Thanks Rich!
As if on cue…

OMIGOD THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING!
And so your old D&D character finally appears in the strip …
