"And then there’s my cousin Eric. He’s quite devout now — a priest, in fact — but in his youth he fought for a tribe of berserkers up north. He lost so many limbs and other bits that his entire body ended up replaced, piece by piece, by cast-iron prostheses. He’s known as Eric the barbaric ferric cleric."
That was my sense exactly – conclusion Lucas is WAY behind in fashion sense if he has the same haircut and such a similar style in clothes to someone dead for 139 years( Well 120 or so when we first saw him).
Everyone knows that fashion recycles, Lucas is just ahead of the curve (and now that Eric, and his haircut, has returned, everyone else would be accused of copying π )
Wait, why does he call her his great aunt if she’s just his regular aunt? Unless she just happened to be a fairly great person, which in this family line seems to be the standard.
But the "great aunt" dialogue box actually comes from offscreen…so it could be Eric IV speaking those words. The "my Dad" who Aeric of Fruush is named for could be Eric III as easily as Eric II.
Uhhh…. yy- yes. Eric I’s wife was Alanna (see strip #1112) They had twins (born just shortly before Eric I was taken away). The twins were Eric II and Minati. Eric II married a Half-Elf sorceress who extended his life but was killed tragically without having children some many years later. Eric II married again and had Eric III. Eric III married Clover and had Eric IV.
β¦ I would comment on the royal family’s lack of originality, keeping the same name alive for 130 years per tradition insteadβ¦ but since I’m from a country where the royal family has jumped between two names (Frederik and Christian) for their kings for the last 600 years (adding two queens, both also sharing the same name)β¦ I am not in a position to do so XD
To talk a bit about my ancestors (simple peasants and crafters) from about 300 years ago.
Jean was married and had two children: Jean and Marie.
After his wife died he remarried and had two more children: Jean and Marie (the first two were also alive).
I do not know how much is tradition and how much is unimaginativeness.
Sorry for the confusion–I’m MFerrier that posted above. Been signing myself MDF for years here, then must have forgot the site I was on and put in my last name.
Will (try) to continue using MDF for consistency’s sake in the future.
Does he even know his own prophecy of coming back when the kingdom is in great peril?
Doesn’t look like it.
Eh, why tell him now? He’s obviously got some catching up to do.
Besides, this is a great opportunity for Rich to engage in some exposition…

Brilliant! π
You win the Internet for today, Mucat. <3
That one was epic!
Is it just me, or does anyone else want to know more about Eric III’s mother?
Heheheh…. Eric III’s mother is not Eric II’s first wife! Bwa-haw haw haw!!!
Meant to say "Eric I’s daughter-in-law" π
But then you would say "which one?" π
This just downright ADORABLE… I love this!
Is it only me, or does anybody else think as well that Eric I looks a lot like the young Lucas Greyfort?

Hah! You caught me! I managed to confuse myself with this crazy family line for this one line of dialogue.
But the "great aunt" dialogue box actually comes from offscreen…so it could be Eric IV speaking those words. The "my Dad" who Aeric of Fruush is named for could be Eric III as easily as Eric II.
She would be Eric the Short’s Great-Aunt (they kinda skip the ‘Grand’ stage)

When you have someone as Epically Legendary as Eric I, why wouldn’t you want to honour his legacy by naming each successive first-born after him?

In #1112, Alanna is on the left?
Friday’s flashback seems to confirm that.
This is getting awkward for the original King Eric.
"La-dee-dee, one-two-three… Erics of Drostardy…
A B C D E F G…Erics of Drostardy.
Are these Erics that we see,
Numbered I and IV and III,
Some unrelated coterie?
No! They’re Erics of Drostardy!"
Holy crap that was the BEST!!! I wish I’d made that connection years ago!!!
Just spotted something: if Eric I died before even knowing Eric II, how would he know his first wife extended his life? o_O
Eric 3 is the one with the beard. He’s telling Eric 1. He even says "my father"
Panel two
Yeah, Eric III just finished telling him all that.
Got confused because no question mark at the end
Thanks, Rich! Glad you liked it.
Was originally going to be a line about waiting for "Eric the Half-a-Bee" to show up–then inspiration struck–and it turned out to be much more fun.

The confusion was momentary. I figured it out! π But thanks for the clarification.
"Hi, I’m Eric, and this is my brother, Eric, and this is my other brother Darryl.
/facedesk
Minati should be Eric III’s Aunt, not Great-Aunt
As stated above, yup. I know. Already been pegged.
Maybe she just was/is a very great person?
Portraits the Royal equivalent of getting out the family photo album
"Oh, gods, they’re unlocking ANOTHER gallery?"
The Goldin mentioned. That wouldn’t be the one that had a run in with the goblins and fell for the Oger would it?
Took me a moment to figure out who you were talking about, but no, the one who thought the Ogre was a royal under a curse is younger than Eric III
*Hands mucat & T-Chall the microphones* all y’all drop them, you won again
I’m sitting here, to the point of tears, laughing, and I can’t explain to my family _why_.
The follow up strip would be a darkened set, the lights go up, and we see Bob Newhart in bed. Sleeping next to him is Captain Fang.
I have a pet bee named Eric…
Omg! Loving this plot line Rich! Suspense and intrigue ftw, plus some messianic badassery β€οΈ?
HEATHER!!! AHH! I hope you keep reading, ’cause Lady Marion of Heatherdale’s return is going to be epic.
"So, let me repeat everything you just told me, for the benefit of the readers who didn’t catch it because it was between strips."
The ‘Hi, Eric’ exchange is very cute.
t!
Actually, some people do that for real, it’s not just some exposition clichΓ© made up for TV or comics (could just as easily have had Eric III say that in panel two and Eric the Clean say "OK")
There is another Eric… lives to the north, married a mermaid. We really don’t talk about him much.
Eric III looks super cute in the last panel!
"Hi, Eric!"
The kid knows how to handle this.
Man, Eric sure looks pretty overwhelmed at the news, and I don't think that Eric is helping.
