Right, he should grab 3 or four of the the snake-hair to resist twisting. Double C-C bonds are much more resistant to rotation than single C-C bonds, and triples are even more resistant. I often tutor high school students in chemistry, so this is the example that came to mind.
I was right there with you David, the moment you said "Double C-C". Amazing how much of my mental processing is built around my chemistry degree and earlier studies. Despite the 20+ years since.
I just want to say this page has so much awesome going on! Nike is always a treat. Plundercheeks and his kobold minions who aren’t being entirely a joke for once. Yapp with a gorgon head. The poor Drostdary infantry commander. The return of Sarge in action! Not to mention the Chimera and all of the other things! I’m sure there’s details that I’ve missed, but this page is incredible!
WOW!!! just what i needed, some action, and great action too! stupendous seeing familiar but missed friends- especially chimera. So agree with above comments 😀
Yeah, the dog-kobolds are an earlier D&D tradition. I’ve always loved the reptilian variety though… lovable losers that like to think they’re kin to the dragons. I’ve played a few too… like the mighty and magnificent sorcerer, Volkarion Brightflame.
For that matter, my group have usually loved them too… we’ve had many kobold encounters over the years and campaigns, and a surprising number of them have gone peacefully. Of course, that might also be because nobody wants to risk fighting the devious little bastards on their home ground… 🙂
Yeah, my players enthusiastically befriended a tribe of kobolds, who became their devoted if sometimes inconvenient allies.
"I KNOW the elven ambassador is a jerk, Fizzle, but tunneling under the podium and collapsing it in the middle of his speech doesn’t help."
"Was on talk his but went hours interminable for! Have everyone would starved we intervened if hadn’t!"
(The kobolds’ chief mining engineer considered herself a scholar of the PCs’ language, and loved learning new words, but had no patience for syntax. Essentially she would throw all the words in her sentence into a sack and pull them out in whatever order whim dictated. They got very good at understanding Fizzle-speak when she was leading them past all the intricate traps in the kobolds’ home tunnels.)
Not quite. Yoda’s speech patterns are idiosycratic but consistent. Fizzle would just chirp out a rapid-fire string of words that contained every word in her intended sentence, but in utterly random order.
But only when speaking mammalian languages. In Draconic, her diction was impeccable.
First kobold I ever saw was in one of the cutscenes in Baldur’s Gate. They were dogs back then. Easy to kill on their own but sometimes could cut you down in large groups.
Ah, I see. It looks like it could be one of these:
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/zombie/images/2/2c/Heavy-Flanged-Mace.jpg
Does both crushing and some minor cutting damage. Nasty!
I love the fact that the captain comes back after a solitary appearance 13 tears ago to be killed (or at least he is gonna need a tetanus shot) in this climactic battle!
Thought he was a random new character, checked Master Layne (who turned out to be the elf) thinking it was him, and then didn’t bother to check if the Captain had appeared before
Well, hopefully Chimera is doing damage to Ranna’s army. But it’s dragon-head who’s in charge of the fire-breathing, so it’s anyone’s guess what he’s aiming at.
I’m also very happy too, to see so many old friends! It is good to know, that they made it out alive from the Explosion, and I hope they make it out alive from this mess too!
I’m especially happy to see Nike and Chimera. They always belonged to my favorite charackters. Though, there are quite a few about whom I could tell the same…
Oddly enough, I think a lot of these folks are happy as clams now.
Chimera is there! Yay!
Also love the looks of the kobolds on panel 3. They’re certainly enjoying themselves!
And good on Yapp for knowing about using a severed gorgon’s head against Ranna’s soldiers!
But be careful with that thing, Yapp. One jarring move, and the snake he’s holding will become an axle for the head to twist around on…

Yeah, I am getting on in years, but due to my associates in Chemistry (from long ago), I immediately understood your reference. 🙂
Awwww! The kobolds are just happy to be invited to the party!

I’ve never really liked it when people drew kobolds as dog like, I’ve always seen them as funky little lizards.
Some of us are old enough to remember the hairy dog-like kobolds

Not saying there is anything wrong with the scaley kobolds, just that I’m from the time of the hairy version
The legend of Tucker’s Kobolds extends across universes….
Yeah, my players enthusiastically befriended a tribe of kobolds, who became their devoted if sometimes inconvenient allies.

Heh, amusing story Mudcat, thanks. *chuckle*
Fizzle related to Yoda, she was?
Not quite. Yoda’s speech patterns are idiosycratic but consistent. Fizzle would just chirp out a rapid-fire string of words that contained every word in her intended sentence, but in utterly random order.

She still sounds like a fun character 😀
D&D kobolds were never hairy! Even when they were yappy dog-like, they still had scales and horns!
…sorry, pet peeve.
Yeah, I get peeved too when I go to pet a scaly kobold and it’s fluffy! Lol
So enjoying all the observations and jokes on here- ty all 🙂

Yeah, pretty accurate description: if you see one, you are fine, if you see many, it’s too late for you 😛
Remember Ko-na’mi, the kobold monk? Got punted off a cliff
Except that sometimes when you find one, it turns out to be a god-level NPC. Like say, Captain Fang.
A.L., aren’t you old enough to have played Wizardry?
t!
Yes, but for some reason that one slipped me by. Looks like it was pretty popular in the 80s when I was more of a bike fiend 😀
Dogs with scales.
Both seem wrong to me, a kobold should look like a kabauter, leprechaun or klabauter.
p.s.
Klabauter are also known as as ship kobolds, so I guess kabauter like Dave the Gnome could be called wood Kobolds.
p.p.s.
Dave the Gnome isn’t, never was and never will be a Gnome.
Good to see Master Layne after almost five years (even better that he knows when to keep his eyes wide shut 😀 )
As for Sarge: low blow! 😛
To be fair all his blows are likely to be low.
And he made it look so satisfying. Cruuunch!
Not so much ‘Cruuunch!’ as ‘Squinch!’ (well, more of a wet sound than a dry one)
And, if it was a bludgeoning weapon, she would probably enjoy it 😛
After she recovers, weakly: "Again! Hit me there again!!"
Ah, I see. It looks like it could be one of these:

Yup. That’s the one.
Glad to see Nike is doing well.
Is that….is it,….by the 9 gods it is!. PLundercheeks!
I know this is to be expected on a battlefield but things are getting intensely chaotic.
Loving all the cameos.
I admit Slurr was one of the last ones I would have expected.
At first I thought it was Ken, but remembered he’s a *neo*-otyugh–and also trapped under the mountain, right?
Hope most of them make it through.
Well, King Eric will be needing a Captain when this is all over, plenty of opportunities for someone to earn a promotion though
Correction: what’s left of the Black Mountain. 😉
I love the fact that the captain comes back after a solitary appearance 13 tears ago to be killed (or at least he is gonna need a tetanus shot) in this climactic battle!

This is fantastic. Conveys the chaos, while also making it clear what is happening with each individual.
t!
Fantastic job, Rich! Such great action shots in each panel, and a treat to see so many familiar faces from the early days of YAFGC again.
Best of all was the seeing Chimera in the last panel, alive and well, and doing severe damage to Ranna’s army.
Now I just hope Master Lane, in panel 4, will keep his eyes shut tight, and manage to spear that gorgon!
Hopefully the two ‘allies’ near him will deal with the Gorgon
Hmmm … in general, it seems that Ranna is losing. Unless it’s just this page and next page will have opposite panels …
Well, hopefully Chimera is doing damage to Ranna’s army. But it’s dragon-head who’s in charge of the fire-breathing, so it’s anyone’s guess what he’s aiming at.
Dragon can focus when necessary.
And that’s when you’re *really* in trouble.

On a side note, I really love Yapp’s expression.
Ah their’s the chimera and alot of characters I Didn’t ever think I’d see again in the comic. But am very glad I did.
I hope someone thought to get in touch with Gram the Alchemist, the guy with the potion that can reverse the gorgon’s stone gaze.
I am hearing Howard Shore frantically composing the score for these scenes
I’d love to say something intelligent here, but it’s difficult to speak while holding one’s breath and staring wide-eyed. Wow!
Chimera is my favourite character, always good to see those guys.
Hith!
It is great to see Chimera and Nike again, given that they both lived in the upper reaches of the mountain I was worried that we wouldn't.
