And Rich, I know not everything is a direct homage, but the last three panels reminded *me* of the end of The Hobbit (book) when Bilbo was knocked unconscious wearing the Ring, and almost gets stepped on. 😉

That’da been awesome. But I’m glad you didn’t, actually. Without funny SFX, left on its own, the scene looks pretty vicious, warfare as ugly efficiency.

If I were Cadugan, at this point I would be tentatively assuming that every freckled stranger I meet is a sibling.
Once again, Cadugan is indirectly introduced to another of his maternal half-sibling by fate.
There’s a SHovel-Knight joke in here some where but I can’t be bothered to dig it up.
Reminds me of the start of the game "Dungeon Siege", the main character is a farmer whose main weapon is a either a shovel or a rake (can’t remember), do remember the moves were spectacular
Madeline the paladin from Rusty and Company also fights with gardening tools – and very effectively.
Or Tika Waylan from Dragonlance with frying pans (well before Rapunzel)
In the old chinese TV show ‘Monkey’ (a favourite of British school kids of my age) Pigsy fought with a muck rake

Shame about what happened to the actress who played Tripitaka 🙁 (yes, the male monk was played by a female)

There have been attempts to remake that show several times, none come even close to the original
I had a character in AD&D who used a shovel as his primary weapon. His name was "Croak, the Man Doomed to Die" as I had a horrible streak of characters dying.
Of course he never did.

I must say the first panel had an "Indiana Jones" feel to it. Must be the hat.
Seeing this action makes me think of Nethack, for a halfling archaeologist. Standard weapons are the whip and shovel, which is also useful for getting through dirt walls, collapsed tunnels, locked wooden doors, etc. Very much inspired by Dr. Henry Jones, Jr.
