I officially have a YAFGC patreon!

Ew. That’s blurry. After a rather irritating hard drive failure I’ve had to start reinstalling all my software. And I thought, this time, maybe I’d try NOT putting my ancient Photoshop program back on and instead save resources by using the GIMP instead. Well this is the result of my first attempt. I may get around to fixing it up, we’ll see.

Good to see they made it.
Hmm…does Nike have actual usable hand-equivalents at the ends of those wings? I don’t think I ever realized that before.
Also, unlike Mr. Izquxxisquid, Nike *did* fight in the battle, so she could argue that she earned those scavenging rights.
No, fairly sure no harpy’s have finger-equivalents, those are just feathers designed to *look* like fingers
She did? Can you remember which page showed her in the fight?
And since when did scavengers ‘earn the right’ to scavenge? That’s what makes them scavengers (not saying that that is a *bad* thing, just *a* thing)
It wasn’t so much the fingery-looking feathers as the way, in the final panel of this strip, Nike seemed to use her wingtips quite effectively like hands.
We saw Nike fighting on the anti-Rannite side of this battle in https://www.yafgc.net/comic/3332-the-northrealm-at-war/
And yeah, most scavengers in nature don’t bother to justify their scavenging, to themselves or others. A seagull and a squid just scavenge because they’re a seagull and a squid.
But were you to uplift them both to sapience and give them a multispecies society to interact with — and even more importantly, make them characters in a story written by and for humans — they might start trading awkward excuses like Nike and Mr. Izquxxisquid do here. 🙂
Thank you, had forgotten she was on that page (remembered Sarge and his ‘low blow’ and the fate of the poor Captain)
The harpies certainly seem to have hand equivalents in comic 99, where they’re drawing on the wall.
Ooh, good catch!
I didn’t even realize till now that I’ve always felt vaguely bad for the harpies because they don’t have hands. Granted, functional wings are cool as hell too, but *both* would be better. And as it turns out, there was nothing to worry about!
Still fairly sure they are still just feathers
is it supposed to be blurry? I can’t read what they’re saying. I feel like that meme where the guy is squinting trying to read a very small piece of paper.
Yeah, it is very pale and blurry for me as well. I suspect he is having tech issues.
Same here. I’ve messed with the color curve a bit to make everything much more visible, so while this issue persists this should make for a decent enough stopgap for anyone else having this problem: https://i.imgur.com/d5E0t33.jpg
please read what the author wrote under the image for the details on why the image is blurry.
Yeah, he hadn’t written that yet when I posted. *wry chuckle*
Yeah, I didn’t notice myself until it had been up long enough for Sparrow and Eolhin to have this conversation. My bad.
At least in Squid’s defence, he’s only eating brains from people who’re already dying. Downright honorable for an illithid.
D&D version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nerv is a group of Illithids and instead of fusing everyone’s souls into a giant naked woman to live in space forever (until Shinji screws it up and dooms humanity because he’s a lil’ bitch) they just eat all the brains and collect the entire human race’s knowledge into themselves.
actually… that would make a decent campaign idea… I’m gonna write that down.
Good to see Nike survived, and Mr Ixie (mostly Nike though)
bird tits ftw. love me some birdie girlies.
Could this character drink bleach, please?
Much obliged.
t!
that is quite rude, was it really necessary to say that? there are people in this world with different opinions to you, but that does not mean their opinions hurt you in any way. does the fact that bird women are appealing to me affect your life in any meaningful way? does this knowledge somehow cause you debilitating pain that makes it difficult to feed your family? am I not allowed to find things appealing unless you do as well?
well if people are only allowed to be attracted to the same thing you are attracted to then doesn’t that mean every person in the world should try to sleep with your significant other? that is not a healthy view of the world, nor is it a healthy way to act towards others. hatred only breeds more hatred, I believe we should strive to achieve a peaceful world where everyone can live together in harmony, I believe we should strive for a better world for future generations to inherit.
please consider how your words affect those around you, not just the ones they are directed at, but also the ones who hear them later down the line. would you be proud to tell your children that you posted this? would you be proud to tell them that you tried to entice someone into suicide? and what if I had taken your advice, what if I didn’t know what drinking bleach would do, what if I was a child who thought drinking bleach would make me better like the people of the internet? would you feel proud explaining to whoever judges your soul in the end how you killed a child with your words?
you are lucky, for on this day you encountered someone with the knowledge to see through this plot, someone with enough self love to not take these thoughts into consideration, but tomorrow you may not be so lucky, tomorrow you may end up with blood on your hands. take this time to reflect on your actions, consider what your words can do to the world, and then consider how to use them for a better tomorrow.
and to any children who may be reading this person’s comment in the future… do not drink bleach, it’s bad for you. yes the bleach anime has cool swords in it, but anime is not real and if you drink bleach you will never wake up and your family will be very sad.
Yeah, look… I’m with t! and Rancourt here. Though, Rancourt is a lot more sympathetic than I am.
Your roleplay experiments are neither endearing nor amusing. I don’t care whether you get off on bird people or not, but t! didn’t insult any REAL person by your own admission. I don’t like being tricked into interacting with fictional characters and I don’t appreciate your extensive use of sarcasm to deflect your butthurt feelings.
(And please spare me the bullshit reminder that your characters are real to you. I heard it before and it’s irrelevant.)
While Rancourt in his kind heartedness sees you as someone needing help, I am not your therapist.
So please knock it off or I’ll ban you.
this isn’t me roleplaying, this is just how I respond to people telling me to commit suicide. I can’t help it if I talk a lot. I didn’t use any sarcasm in this either, drinking bleach is bad, I knew a girl in elementary school who used to drink bleach because she thought it was good for you. most of the time when someone hurls inflammatory remarks it leads to a poop flinging competition and everyone walks away salty, it’s better to talk things out civilly. if we can have a calm discussion about acceptance instead of death threats then why shouldn’t we go that route? what’s wrong with trying to dissuade toxic hate speech like this? why are you supporting the person who wants to kill people for their opinions whilst simultaneously putting down the person who is trying to warn children about the dangers of drinking bleach? do you want children to die? I don’t want children to die, too many have died already, too many people have been lost to internet bullying. I was bullied my entire life, I was beaten, I was thrown down stairs, I was almost raped/kidnapped, and I was hunted through the woods like a fox chased by dogs. insults are only the beginning of bullying, hateful thoughts can turn a person vile and wicked if left to fester and steep. it’s important to stand up to bullies early, tell them what they’re doing is wrong, tell them how their actions can hurt people. if they see the damage they could do then they may stop before they do it, they might be saved before they cross the line. I just want to protect the future from hatred, racism, homophobia, and xenophobia. these things have spurred countless acts of violence, countless deaths, and they could all have been prevented if we stopped sowing the seeds of hatred in the youth. let the hate die with the generation that created it, don’t let it spread to the innocent, help create a peaceful world for everyone. there are riots in the streets, wars breaking out for pointless conflicts, a plague is sweeping the world, and the only way we’ll get through this hell we’ve created is by standing together united as one. we have the power to end hatred, the power to end pollution, the power to end homelessness and starvation, but we can’t agree to work together. why should any more children be kicked out of their homes for disagreeing with their parents? how many more need to be laughed out of school for something they can’t help about themselves? why should anyone be forced to kill themselves just because they care about something harmless?
bullying is never okay, suicide is never the answer, unfounded hatred is never acceptable in a civilised society. I only want to stop the pain.
Yeah. You should really give Rancourt’s posts a good read. Because the poor beleaguered soul who’s pitifully been kidnapped and hunted through the forests and is just trying to save the world from violence does not jive well with the asshole who makes dude-bro remarks about girls’ boobs. I don’t have the patience to deal with or read your bullshit, Sparrow. I’m very very close to blocking your stupid ass.
but it’s true, I was almost kidnapped twice, and almost killed 3 times, I had to sleep in the dirt inside an old storage shed while hiding from the group of people my mom pissed off, probably stole drugs or something. we only survived because she started a fire on the other side of the farm so we had time to steal a truck and escape (I was like 6 so don’t call the cops on me)
just because I like boobs doesn’t mean people haven’t tried to kill me, also how does liking boobs mean I don’t care about society and the environment? I guarantee at least half of the US presidents liked boobs and they lead a country.
Oh my god you complete and utter fool. I just don’t have enough spoons to waste on you and I don’t want any more of my comment space sucked up by you.
Nobody wants your fucking origin story. Nobody asked to hear about your sad childhood or the over the top backstory you probably cribbed from a video game. All I wanted was for you to stop pretending you’re a D&D character in my comments pages and to stop behaving like a dumbass. Clearly this is beyond your ability.
Rich, I’m sorry. I tried, in good faith.
I’m literally telling the truth though, none of my D&D characters have tragic backstories. every word of this is me being genuine and honest, I haven’t roleplayed even once on this page. stop saying I’m lying when I’m telling the truth, I lost my pet frog because we couldn’t go back for him, it was a traumatic experience for me.
Goodness, it’s a remarkably grandiose and self-centered world you and your army of characters live in. I’ve never heard a non-sarcastic "think of the children" argument used in quite this way before, and mind you, I taught philosophy to young adults for a while. I’m noting a certain hubris in comparing your own hurt feelings to responsibility for a child’s death, or at very least, a certain critical failure of scope to the comparison.
By all means, you keep doing you, Sparrow, if you must, but it saddens me that you clearly desperately want engagement with others, but can’t quite leave the safety and security of the arms of a world you completely control, ideologically and fictionally, to do it. I think you may be shooting yourself in the foot with this sort of grandstanding and surprisingly myopic and spectacle-grade self-pity, but obviously, only time will tell. I am not a seer, only a weatherman…and weathermen are not infallible, and should not purport to be.
It feels quite strange to observe this. I had imagined myself to me the biggest reality-avoidant Walter Mitty type here in YAFGC’s comments area, the most fragile, the most needy and insecure, the most dependent upon fantasy and fiction to function as a human being, even provisionally. I’m not sure it’s a much-coveted honor, but for what it’s worth, I yield that title without contest.
t!, my friend, I may be the man of too many words about every subject…but here? I’ve got nothin’, brother. The rest, as Shakespeare said, is silence.
I saw a girl drink Bleach in elementary school because nobody told her it was wrong. I’m not being sarcastic here, it’s very possible for a child to read these sorts of things with how accessible the internet is, and they need to know when something said on here is wrong. as for my feelings being hurt it simply is not the case, I usually keep my emotions in check so that when responding to someone I can stay calm and level headed. if i sound overly preachy it is likely the result of being raised in a fairly religious family, I was forced to go to church many times, and while I don’t go there anymore the values and mannerisms may have stuck with me to some extent. your other observation about me craving engagement is right on the money though. I love talking with people, I love having debates on matter of philosophy and such. hearing someone else’s point of view is always so interesting, but it pains me to see healthy debates turn into mud slinging and insults. a person told me to commit suicide, one of the cruelest things you can do to your loved ones, over the fact that I find bird women attractive. I consider myself to be a member of the furry community (though I’d never be caught dead in one of those big sweaty suits) and I have heard many death threats and all manner of horrible things. I find that the best way to combat belligerent hate is with logic and reason, if you lay out your argument in a calm fashion it makes it difficult for them to come up with a response. it can’t possibly be easy to create a well constructed argument for why someone should end their own life, especially over something so petty, upon attempting to rationalize these thoughts I’d like to believe that most people would realise that their hatred is unfounded, and that the person they are trying to kill hasn’t actually done anything that deserves death as a punishment. now obviously there are those in this world who will cling to their hatred, people who refuse to see reason and will fight it off with a hammer of ignorance and bigotry, but I should hope they exist as a minority amongst what can be considered the smartest species on the planet. I do appreciate your response, seeing an analysis of my personality through the eyes of another was very enlightening. the only problem is that things like tone and sarcasm don’t really carry well in written medium. as such, when I’m being sarcastic I usually try to italicize my words, and when I am telling a joke I’ll typically bold the font. unfortunately this comment section doesn’t have that option readily available so i can see why it’s difficult to make that distinction. I also find it very interesting that you’re a meteorologist, it must be fascinating to watch the movements of weather patterns, i always loved seeing the strange paths tropical storms would take, being moved by wind currents and air temperature, very cool occupation. it’s also quite admirable that you work towards teaching the youth, I personally never liked school much, most of my teachers would just read from the textbooks and didn’t do much to engage me, but I still understand that their role in society was of vital importance. if we’re going to make a better future the first step is having a well educated population.
Telling anyone, fictional or otherwise, to basically ‘kys’ is, at best, rude, specially over something as minor as the likening of fictional bird breasts
Put a sock in it, Guesticus. You’re still not my favorite person around here.
And lest it needs be cleared up, t! suggested to a REAL person that his FICTION CHARACTER should FICTIONALLY drink FICTIONAL bleach. As a way of saying “could you please stop talking in the voice of an asshole character we all hate.” but less unnecessarily politely.
Forgive the intrusion, Rich. This has been gnawing at me all day, and with your blessing — feel free to delete this post if you so desire — I’d like to add the following thoughts at this juncture.
Sparrow, I’d have an easier time believing the whole "this is a character and I take roleplaying seriously" claim if I actually saw any evidence of, you know, *roleplaying* happening. I’m not saying that would necessarily be appropriate here, mind you, but at least it would suggest sincerity in the claim made in the comments of strip #3384. There’s a tiny bit of in-character talk there ("Steve the door…barf up black puddings"), but other than that?
Well, we have "You just got pranked, bro!" Ranna from #3375, pining for nudity on #3374, "talk about their mother" on #3373, a few random observations on #3371, then #3369’s episode of "using reverse psychology on the GM," #3368’s "divine turducken" remark, #3365’s reference to DM and "faulty dice" juxtaposed with heavy disrespect to the strip ("boy toy," "sexy bone daddy," etc.), #3364’s "god booty" and "Cthulhu do be kinda thicc," #3363’s "rocks fall everyone dies," #3359’s "seven mile spanking machine," and then, finally, on #3358, we have the next example of anything remotely like "roleplaying"…
…only, it’s not. Quote: "do I look like the type of person who reads? obviously I’m a martial class and int is my dump stat. I leave the reading to our dragonborn song singer, I just focus on squishing the zombies and breaking the robots. if you want a nerdy reader type you’ll have to talk to my goblin alchemist character."
"Talk to my goblin alchemist character" is not a statement made in character; it’s a statement made from the perspective of the character’s creator. I’d just like to point out that took crawling back a few dozen strips to even find this tangential a reference to the whole "I’m IC" thing, too.
Listen, there’s no crime in being meta-IC, in itself. But if you’re going to be meta-IC at best, you can’t play the "serious ac-tor" card as a defense of unpopular behavior, because no, in point of fact, you’ve *never* actually been "in character," here. You’ve been talking *about* your character, yes, but if this is your idea of "roleplaying," fair enough, to each their own, but you’ve lost the ability to credibly play the "blame the character" card. You’re not actually in character.
I used to be an actor, Sparrow. I have stage and a couple screen credits on my CV. (Small stuff, stuff nobody’s seen. Never said I was a relevant or successful actor.) I’ve been a DM for decades. (Rich has played in campaigns of mine!) I have many, *many* characters with unpopular perspectives.
The only time I’ve "entered character" here was when Rich more or less directly invited me to do so, answering a question he didn’t feel able to answer, about Trevor Larkin. Because, put simply, this isn’t a place where anyone comes to see *me* roleplaying. It’s a place where we all come to listen to *Rich* tell stories. My being "in character" does not serve this goal. If I speak, here, it ought to serve the goal of amplifying and celebrating Rich’s work. This is his "living room," and I am a guest in it. I don’t bring the horde of positively disgusting imaginary yugoloths in my brain to this comments area, because this would not serve to celebrate YAFGC.
So, let’s look at the last handful of months of your interactions with YAFGC, Sparrow. You tend to make one of four types of posts:
* Talking about your characters, including that sort of meta-not-quite-roleplaying I mentioned.
* Random frat-boy-style sexual innuendos. ("loves the sound of spanking"/"spanking machine," "do be thicc," "birdie girlies," etc.)
* Complaints disguised as "commentary," often using dismissive language that serves to diminish the material you’re "commenting" upon, taking it out of a context where the material is treated with respect ("divine turducken," "sexy bone daddy," etc.).
* Sudden hard-swerves to righteous indignation, when you, personally, feel attacked.
Let’s look at a few trends here:
* YAFGC gets dismissive, marginalizing, not-taking-it-seriously language from you. When this is criticized, you cite that you’re "roleplaying" a character who talks this way, and take roleplaying "very seriously." However, you don’t take maintaining a respectful tone toward the material we’re all here to see very seriously. Yes, you could argue that you shouldn’t be required to maintain someone else’s idea of ‘respectful tone,’ but for the record, this is contributing to why many people dislike your presence here.
* There’s a level of solemnity and reverence you uphold, when your own hurt feelings are on the line, that contrasts dramatically to the level of flippancy and disrespectful language you use when talking about YAFGC itself. I would, personally, characterize your "think of the children" grandstand as almost comically overserious, and your "sexy bone daddy" type talk as shockingly flippant and dismissive, in contrast. Again, tone is a choice, but the message you’re putting across here is ‘My feelings: SERIOUS BUSINESS! YAFGC: lulz!’ That may not be the most enlightened stance to take…in the YAFGC comments area. This space is for celebrating and uplifting YAFGC, not your feelings.
* You spend surprisingly little time discussing your characters, for someone who claims to be all about the characters. That’s probably a wise idea — similarly, I don’t spend time discussing Michael Voss here, because the characters we’re here to celebrate are Rich’s and YAFGC’s, not our own — but it makes it really questionable to double down on the "I’m all about the RP here." No. No, you aren’t, no, you haven’t actually been RPing, and that’s an appropriate thing to not-be-doing here…but it means you really aren’t fooling anybody with this ‘it’s my character, don’t blame me’ malarkey.
* When you’re not dismissing YAFGC themes with flippancy, taking yourself too seriously, or metadiscussing your characters, you’re spending an awful lot of time slipping clues about your sexuality into your comments. Speaking as someone who finds a number of YAFGC characters quite attractive myself — dude? This is just not the vector of YAFGC-appreciation that most folks here wish to bond with you on, especially in any great detail.
These factors strongly contribute to why folks don’t really like you much, here…and most importantly, why you’re getting on Rich’s nerves. Rich is *the reason we’re here*.
Rich, and Rich’s creation YAFGC, is the entire point of this space. It’s true, Rich is a mortal human being, imperfect, perspectivally bound as all of us are, and sometimes, there may be cases of his opinion and preferences versus our own, where it’s hard to argue for one objectively "right" course through differing opinions.
In these cases, we defer to him, here. It’s his home, his strip, and we’re guests here, here to admire his work, celebrate his work, enjoy his work. If and when we disagree, we do so from the courtesy and perspective of guests to host. I happen to be completely down with his priorities and the culture he’s cultivating here…but if, hypothetically, I weren’t, I’d shut up, politely agree to disagree, and either defer to his lead or quietly, politely withdraw.
He’s proven open, even receptive, to criticism…honestly, he’s more so than I, personally, am. I don’t think anyone can sincerely accuse him to not welcoming different voices, here. This isn’t about disagreeing with him; you get to do that. It’s about the posture you take, when disagreeing, and the level of sensitivity you demonstrate to the notion that your voice, and your needs, are one of many. There’s a humility, and a respect, that one demonstrates when disagreeing respectfully…and between the grandstanding "think of the children" stuff, the "I’m a serious actor" puffery, and the contrasting flippancy toward the content itself…you’re not really displaying that sort of respect. It’s not that Rich isn’t receptive to disagreement; it’s that you’re approaching the discourse with behaviors that draw your sincerity and motives into question. It’s hard to trust your goodwill…and yes, trust is earned, like that or not.
The way you’re choosing to "enjoy" his work is making it a little harder for a nontrivial number of people, here, to enjoy it themselves, and most of all, it’s making the guy we’re all here to see less comfortable, too. What ultimately matters more, here — the guy we’re here to celebrate, or your need to ‘do you,’ damn the torpedoes and damn the grumbles of others? This is an exceedingly poor battlefield for your own individual ‘right to be you,’ as to ‘stand your ground,’ it needs to be ‘your ground’ in the first place.
I’ve had a few "come to Ch’Thier" talks here before, and this one boils down to the same fundamental point: whatever you believe your rights and social priorities to be, however you may differ ideologically from our host:
* This is his space. We’re guests in it.
* This is literally a party honoring him and his creation, YAFGC. That’s why we’re here and that’s what we’re here to do.
* Some people, our host most significantly, find your behavior a distraction from the enjoyment of YAFGC.
* When we disagree on how to get along here, his opinion carries a little more weight than ours.
I’ve been witness to a number of folks who chose to make this comments area the hill they died upon, over the years. I can’t stop them, obviously, but I always wonder why they came *here* to do that, why they didn’t simply choose to either "play nice" with the prevailing culture, or accept that differences are irreconcilable and amicably part ways. The single most selfish thing one can do here is to presume our own feelings, agendas, and selfish need for validation and vindication are more important, in this very finite and purpose-specific space, than YAFGC is.
I am here to love YAFGC. I am beholden to do so in ways that are conducive to our host enjoying them, because acting at cross purposes to his enjoyment of YAFGC in his own space is profoundly disrespectful to him, and to YAFGC. I am beholden to do so in ways that are compatible with others’ enjoyment of YAFGC, because this is a gathering place for YAFGC fans, and I am merely one of many of those. YAFGC is more important than me, here. The interests of YAFGC, and harmony in its fan space, are more important than any individual needs I may have to self-express in my own way. I have other spaces in which to ‘do me’ — *this* space is for ‘doing YAFGC fandom,’ and that’s my priority, here.
Are you here to love YAFGC? Do you love YAFGC enough to set aside your need to self-express in ways that might be proving to be a distraction to others? Is your time, here in the YAFGC comments area, ultimately about YAFGC, or about yourself?
I’ve never seen anyone double down on ‘I gotta be me’ in the face of knowing that they were getting on the nerves of Rich with their behavior, here, and have it turn out well for them. You know you’re taking actions that are controversial: you wouldn’t be making excuses and frantically defending your actions if you believed they didn’t beg justification. The real question is simple: do you want to get along harmoniously, here? Do you want to be well-received and feel actively welcome?
Do you want this story to end with a ban? It doesn’t have to.
Think about it.
the only time I’m really roleplaying is when I’m talking about myself as the characters I portray. me talking about booty and such is just me being a pervert, it’s one of my greatest flaws, I just love porn so much. i don’t remember what I was talking about with the "divine turducken" comment, but the imagery it invokes is hilarious and I thank you for reminding me of it. as for the rest of your comment… well I must admit my reading comprehension has deteriorated since leaving school, I simply can’t remember all the points you made. I will say that I do apologise for upsetting Rich, I don’t intend to, it’s simply that I have an… abnormal personality, so i have a hard time getting along with others. when I’m speaking to someone it’s a lot easier to tell when I’m joking or when I’m being serious, but in text based conversations it is very difficult to get a read on these sort of fine details. I must commend you though, for your ability to write such a long comment, I tend to become long winded and go off topic when I write for long periods of time, it’s extremely difficult to stay focused on achieving a certain point, thanks in no small part thanks to my ADHD and autism. I appreciate the dedication it must have taken to go through all my past comments and categorise them the way you did, it reminds me of the old days when I wasn’t fat and girls would try stalking me, i wish i had stayed in contact with them, aside from the group that literally tried to kidnap me they were an interesting bunch to interact with. thanks for helping me relive my crazy youth 🙂
Mr. Izquxxisquid’s Winnie-the-Pooh-like eyes get me, every time. I admit that I can’t shake the mental image of his voice sounding like Sterling Holloway…with otherworldly, subtle yet cavernous reverb, a very dark, harmonic-suppressing reverb with long, irregular, non-Euclidean reflections.
I absolutely adore this ‘image’ of Mr. Izquxxisquid’s voice. Sterling was such a unique performer, and his voice perfectly suits. <3
“The Mountains of Oh Botherness.”
Okay, now I’m picturing Tigger as Nyarlathotep, and damn you, foxpookah! 😉
My work here is done. Now to reward myself with a raid on the chicken coo…..er to see how the chickens are doing! 😉
"And the most wonderful thing about Nyarlanthoteps is Iiiiiiiii’m the only one!"
All three of you get brookies…
I started making brownies but they ended up cookies…
Yum! Thank you, Fang FanGirl.
You are most kind, Mrs. Fang! And enjoy your chicken tonight, T-Chall!
if you like the squid boi I suggest you check out the comic Steve Lichman, the character Flay is very similar.
Instead of using GIMP, check out Krita (krita.org). It’s another free/open source option, but more suited to illustration, whereas GIMP focuses primarily on image manipulation. Better brush engine and brushes, plus useful things like non-destructive canvas rotation and mirroring (rotate and flip on a keypress for easier drawing).
I’ve also heard Photoshop users say it’s more comfortable/familiar too, but I don’t know how true that is, since I haven’t used Photoshop in ages.
GIMP is fine in a pinch (and I’m all for it, since I support opensource software and linux-native apps) but …it’s not on the same level as Photoshop, and likely never will be. At least future versions will add some interesting features.
Yep. I tried it once, but I am sticking to either Pixelmator or Affinity Photo, as both do everything I did with Photoshop. I also use Affinity Designer to replace Illustrator. GIMP is just not workflow-friendly.
GIMP may have lot of features but the learning curve is really steep …
Yeah, Gimp will do the job, and is useful, but the learning curve is annoying, particularly to former Photoshop users. It does have an extension to be able to use Photoshop plugins though, which really helps with some things. I am not sure how something looked fine in Gimp, but ended up this bad though. That might be an exporting problem, with too high a compression value. With Gimp when you hit save, it only saves in the Gimp-native lossless format, and you have to choose export and set a bunch of parameters to get a jpg or png. The default compression can be way too high. I always check the resulting image after exporting, and they are usually fine though, with the right settings.
I loved dear old Photoshop, but I am NOT paying every month, and putting my stuff in the cloud, or having a requirement to be on line to use the program, that is just insane. So anything after Photoshop shifted to that is right out.
Actually, that may have changed. I haven’t updated my Gimp in a while. I really need to do that. So thanks for the reminder. 🙂
Pot and kettle as they say…
I’ve always loved the way YAFGC uses ‘fictional’ species to depict universal Human foibles/truths.
t!
I don’t see it.
Harvesting flesh from corpses is just making use of resources, it may be culturally insensitive if done to people who have burial customs, but otherwise it’s not bad in any way.
Sucking the brains out of still living people may be less bad if done to these dying already, but it’still murder (I assume he doesn’t ask).
I played a bit with color ramps and contrast and other things to try to make it a bit less blurry. I think the text will have to be in a bigger font size, though.

Glad to see these two back!
Tech issues aside–which is all part of a learning curve–it’s a good strip. Funny–and perfectly in character for the pair of them!
I second the idea of Izquxxisquid’s voice being that of the late Sterling Holloway, suitably altered. "Oh bother." 😀
(Suppose we could get Jim Cummings if we absolutely had to. If you’ve never seen it on YouTube, his Winnie-the-Pooh reading of Darth Vader’s lines in *Star Wars* is hilarious.)
Hearing Darth Vader’s lines in Winnie-the-Pooh’s voice was exactly the kind of start I needed for my Monday morning. Thank you.
Has anyone played a rpg where you don’t kill things and loot to bodies for treasure? To the survivors go the spoils!
Yeah, this is basically the YAFGC version of "The Sewers / Dog Eats Dog" from Les Miz.
A lot funnier, of course.
t!
t! gets brookies for the Les Miz reference
It’s a funny version of the entire history of humans (and monsters.)
"the living but terminally wounded"
How much you wanna bet there’s a *gulf* of difference between Mr. Izquxxisquid’s definition of "terminally wounded" and that of Cpt. Benjamin Franklin Pierce?
t!
Oh, absolutely.
But Hawkeye would also understand the difference between ‘on the operating table’ and ‘battlefield triage’.
"What do you mean he would have recovered? His tentacles were sheared clean off!"
"Humans don’t HAVE tentacles!"
"Can you really call that living, then?"
To be fair, Pierce would be considered an impressively high level cleric.
mucat, I love you.
Seconded.
t!
Awww. You folks are awesome. 🙂
Oh… how I missed Nike!
Hey, Rich,
Have you ever looked at Clip Studio? Not sure how much use you’d have for all the features, but it really is fun to play with, and in my case, does a lot of comic-related stuff that Photoshop just can’t do.
Man, it’s been forever since we’ve seen ‘Squid.
Is THAT who that is?
It's not so much blurry as it is too pale. Panel five though, I'm not sure I'm reading Nike's expression right; it looks like she is really happy, not shocked.
