3408 Lolths Funeral
Thank you all so much for the kind birthday wishes yesterday.
I had a great time, my family took care of me and treated me like royalty. I spent much of the day in naval combat in the Caribbean with the family. And while Jenny ultimately was the glorious winner, it wasn’t until after her treasure ship had been sent to Davy Jones’ Locker by her vindictive brother.
51 has started out pretty good.

Oh? I missed Lolth’s death I think…
This is the last time we see her.

Belated congratulations on your big day, Rich!
I wish you as many happy returns in health and prosperity as you want for yourself. ^_^
I love the priestess’s name. 😀
Yeah, not surprised that scorched body gave up the ghost, voluntarily or not. Even if her material body was salvageable, Lolth isn’t the type to endure lengthy and painful rehab just to maintain a presence on the material plane, when she could nip back to her own realm for a fresh body instead.
She MIGHT not be able to do that anymore, with low magic …
She didn’t know that at the time though
Actually we saw her a few strips later in 3348, and she wasn't looking so good. Wasn't clear that her "mortal" form had actually been killed though. I'm a little surprised that gods can survive that.
I just hope, that the child of Wolf was put in a safe place before that. We only know, that it was conceived, but that was pretty long ago.
Nephilia’s smirk reminds me of a line from some of the Warhammer fantasy fluff about the Dark Elf Witch Elves
"Many would die to see the smile on the lips of a Witch Elf (And in fact, many do)"
Oh, belated happy birthday!
Also, when you say like royalty, do you mean you got abandoned to be tortured by an evil goddess cult to be converted to their ranks? ;P
Uh… nope. Like they brought me food and deferred to my preferences all day.
Ah, i understand.
How is the little halfing who save you?
PD: Sorry for the bad joke. I’m afraid don’t understand "deferred". And google translator don’t help any (who says that, eh?)
Heheh, deferred means they let me make the decisions. And it’s in reasonably common usage around here. If perhaps a bit deliberately formal.
At least she didn’t get eaten like all those other gods.
Well, It’s Lloth. How do you know she don’t loves it?
Happy Belated Birthday!
Oh! Belated Happy Birthday!
That… doesn’t really seem to be something Wolf would say, is it?
How do you figure that?
Just figured he was more respectful towards Her, but can also, kinda, see it as trying to bring a little humour in a dark moment
Speaking of ‘dark moments’, is Nephilia still blind?
For a Drow male, Wolf has always played a dangerously open game. He defers to authority, not because he actually considers himself inferior, but because it’s in his own best interest to do so…and he rarely pretends otherwise.
It’s risky, but it’s also a power move: "I’m so good at everything I do that I can afford to flirt with angering you, though you’re still in charge. Here, have a cocky but not-quite-insubordinate smirk." And he walks that tightrope well enough to build an impressive track record of outlasting those who WERE in charge…
I got Wolf down as an opportunist, that sound like a very opportunistic comment.
Opportunist for what though? He is already at the highest position a male could ever *dream* of reaching in a Drow society: not only is he the Queen’s Consort, he has also been tasked with spearheading the repopulation efforts
If you are already at highest position you can reach, you need to elevate the POSITION.
Also, position isn’t everything. You can get opportunities which are not automatically granted by your position.
I had the exact opposite reaction to NotRichard thinking that Wolf is exactly the character who would understand about cynically doing things for others in your own best interest.
Anyone else thought that this was for Arachne? Before reading panel three or the title?
I still miss Silk as well 🙁
Yes, me.
It didn’t occur to me that the funeral could be Arachne’s, simply because I didn’t think they had her body. Though now that you raise the possibility, Drowcup could have led them to it between the end of the battle and now.
What I can’t shake, though, is my misinterpretation of the grave itself. I know the rectangular piece must be the lid to a crypt embedded in the floor…but my brain keeps seeing it as a big flat stone they’ve smashed Lolth under.
"We release thy spirit, great goddess, and send it on swift and sure wings back to your dark domain, for thou art our sovereign, our protector, and our great Mistress, and we your servants now and forevermore. And thy mortal form, O Lolth, we smoosh under this big ol’ rock, because *ew*, spider!"
(Poor Mother Longlegs. Being a drow priestess with arachnophobia is worse than being a giraffe with strep throat.)
Wasn’t seeing it as the entrance to a crypt holding Lolth’s mortal remains, more of a memorial plaque
This might also be know as the great KER-SPLAT!
I love the unisex nature of the prayer.
Clearly ‘we Drow’ does not include the sons – assuming we even acknowledge they exist.
t!
The follow-up line leaves little doubt 😀
I’ll quote my favourite Philosopher Nikary Flare: "Oh! Belated Happy Birthday!"
Not sure how it works with your gods, but if Wolf had been able to impregnate Lolth as planned, would that have ended with the destruction of her physical form, or would the pregnancy (if they’d achieved it) have continued on the spiritual plane?
I don’t follow what pregnancy has to do with destroying her physical form. Most pregnancies I’ve witnessed required a physical form to follow through with.
All I’ll say further on the matter is this: in his timeline, Wolf seduced Lolth three years ago.
Isn’t there a drow demigoddess (courtesy of Wolf) still to be accounted for?
If she exists (I assume it would be a she), she would be an infant, or toddler, depending on the gestation period of drow goddesses. That will be an interesting thread to watch for in the future.
Wouldn’t it be a kicker if the baby was a boy? 😀
Well, the girls have given more play but it’s Richard. You can’t say it be both.
And remember. There are no more gods and goddes. They need news.
Hey, Think this. Drow Demigod is a boy and crossing paths with Jone (some near of that).
It’s an idea.
Happy birthday, Rich – best wishes for your next hemicentennium!
How more i read this last strips more i though this is a really ending.
Later i think how many stories have to tell and i’m happy again.
Happy belated birthday to one who entered the world a mere 21 days after I did!
Or 20, rather, now that I look at the strip date…
Happy belated birthday!
t!
Yes, a happy very belated bday- hope it was great! 😀
That the Drow have a ceremony for this makes me wonder how many times this has happened before to Lolth.
It might be improvised ceremony.
Possibly a few times?
"Oh Great Lloth, we consign your mortal remains to the darkness, so you may recover from the bender you had Arachne last night and couldn’t survive the 25th round of Green Fairy and curried Carrion Crawler. We beseech that you do not take out the resulting hangover on your worshippers, but turn your wrath towards someone more fitting like the orcs or goblins or someone who isn’t us."
had with*
I need to proofread my replies more often…
I didn’t bring this up when it first happened because there was a lot going on but how did Lolth regain her physical form? The focusing crystal was smashed? Or did her retreat from the Beholder King allow her to keep the one she was using?
She might still had her old one. She didn’t leave a body behind after all…

Gotta say, those two make an excellent team. I hope it turns out to be worth the wait… for both of them.
…. at first I thought I was seeing Arachne’s funeral, but I geuss Drew-something had to take care of that herself.
BTW- just had a thought; Drow as wanderers…. or mabye not. I tried to think of a historical parallel to explain what it wouild be like… and there just isn’t any.
Nomadic, nocturnal Elves with attitudes, yet without any sense of urgency or a quest to guide them.
Huh.
Maybe I should start writing again, myself.
FYI: Your link to #2886 only showed empty panels
Check the date of that page, and view it through a working light bulb (the old fashioned kind, has to be pre-2016 bulb, non-eco), all will be revealed
Got it! Next time I’ll read the comments!
Comments are part of the experience of this comic 🙂
Hope you didn’t mind me playing a bit of a prank on you
Not at all; it was a good gag!
Happy belated birthday, Rich!
Love the hand gesture of Mother Longlegs in panel 3: The Sign of The Spider.
It’s an interesting detail that adds to the world building.
Many belatedly happy returns!
What a nice funeral service for our favourite spider goddess…and Wolf with the snark at the end.
Speaking of the service, is Mother Longlegs doing the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" hand gestures in panel 3? If so, that would be awesome.
Possibly, spreading fingers like that does give the impression of a spiders’ eight legs, with the thumbs being the mouth-parts (palps?)
Happy Birthday, Rich.
not to be that guy or anything… but I don’t think that’s how you spell cemetery.
Spelled that way for added secrecy. Lewie would have looted the place ages ago, but he always got 404 errors when he scried "Sacred Drow Cemetery".
Not to infringe on an awesome comic or BK’s day, but I’m going to lol because I feel very thankful for the comic, and Rich, and the comments. A happy Thanksgiving to the Americans who celebrate, and a wonderful day to everyone!
Thanks, P!enapple, and to everyone else here in the states, happy Thanksgiving.
I’m curious if Wolf’s god-blooded child (as I’m sure he’s the farther to hundreds or thousands) survived Lolth’s death. Should be interesting.
As Rich said, that happened three years ago, the only question has to be: where was the child(ren) during all this?
Naw, that’s not the only question.
Another question — if we want to estimate the number of godlings out there — is "Does Lolth do live birth like a mammal, or egg sacs like a spider?"
That… was going to be the follow up question (forgot at add it on the previous post), did kinda hint at it with the "child(ren)" part though
Thank you, that’s really awesome of you.
Woah, i managed to catch up finally.
With the old gods dead, that means Cap’n fang has 200% chance of becoming a god now, right?
Shhhh…. we don’t want this information going to his head.
I honestly think that he wouldn’t understand it anyway lol
It would be a demotion. A Cap’n is worth at least thirteen gods, right?
To Mucat’s question; as we now know Lolth’s original "true" form was an Elf, & given that her relations with Wolf were also in the form of Elves, my guess would be that her offspring would be born alive in Elven form. As a Goddess, though, Lolth could pretty much do whatever she wanted, so I guess we’ll have to wait & see.
