3436 She Is What She Is
Apologies for the tardiness of this strip. I just had Yet Another Major Tech Overhaul that I could afford thanks to your wonderful generosity, both on and off Patreon. I’ve now got a brand new motherboard, processor, lots of new ram, new 2T harddrive (and two 1T spares installed!) and things are really nice and smooth now. I also just had my first production meeting with the studio I’m working with this morning so employment is good, tech is good, life is good. Now if I can just get it to stop snowing here and letting my kids get back to school….

Commentary to comic shading: Is it twilight already? I mean, when I looked at the page I immediately assumed it’s late in evening, then I remembered you are experimenting and that it may not be deliberate.
Yeah, there’s a whole lot of things I have to think about now that I’m doing some digital shading. Before I had two modes. Day scenes which were raw scans of paper, and night scenes which were Photoshopped grey with blacked out skies. Now the depth of the shadow and the direction sets a time of day along with everything else!
Thanks for the comment, a new thing to think about. 🙂
I assumed the shading was because they entered the castle portico, which is typically under cover and shadowy, even in daylight
Yes, but the angle of the light, especially in the last panel, would indicate a low sun, either very early in the morning, or on towards sunset. The latter being more likely, given the drive there, where the angle was already looking somewhat low.
I also always get the feeling it must be evening. It would make sense as such, given the ligths at the time they were preparing to leave, the traveltime, and the comment from the DM-s that Elegrost castle is not far from Greyfort.
Those eyes… Captain seeing something he likes? HAHA
Every time Lucas appears has growing more and more.
I don’t believe i will be tire of see it.
PD: I don’t understand all the text you put in description but it seemed a lot of a good things and i congratulate you and cheers for the people of your patreon.

For sure! Same here.

To paraphrase an episode of MST3K, "I’ll just stand here and jut."
The new style is coming along nicely.
No racism allowed. & where are his eyes facing?
Well, they are not facing the face, that is for sure.
Off the top of my head, I can only think of two possible objects he can be looking at.
"Hey, my eyes are up here."
"In my defense, your eyes are uncanny featureless white orbs."
‘Yeah, I know. I wasn’t complaining; I was bragging!"
Distraction strategy working! That will take off his mind of his hateful thoughts and focus them on other impure ones.
While i appreciate the way Lucas refused to accept discrimination on the part if the driver- and very much appreciate and respect him all the more- i’m of the opinion that his intelligence was seriously insulted as well.
Rich- major congrats on the upgrades, and employment, and life being good – it’s wonderful to hear!
Hm, always interesting to see approach to racism/speciesm in a fantasy world. Is is matter of culture, skin tone, species/race or just labeling a group of beings as lesser and/or evil? Is this particular case I am more surprised to see Wells not knowing that several Dark Mistresses serve Lucas, that is serious lack of intel by a captain.
Particularly given Lucas must have been called to the castle quite a number of times in the last ten years, his being a Duke and all. Perhaps the captain is a recent transfer from another location in the kingdom? Given the frequent visits of Orc and Goblin royalty to Greyfort though, you would think anyone of significant rank would have had to study Lucas and his household.
I was thinking the same. Also, upon Naroasa’s comment a couple of strips ago, it is definately not the first time she is driving the couch. It could be though, that a) the DMs are more under Flannet’s command and drove her around, b) that she is rather new in this position and weren’t in Elegrost yet, c) the captain is new (he seems to be pretty young as such), or any of these together.
As for the captain’s comment, I would say it is not that surprising otherwise in every other aspect. The majority of DMs fought on Rannas side merely 10 years ago, and even the ones that did not are considered to be evil. Now looking at how certain things were regarded even over 2 decades after WW II (as I heard at least), it is no wonder that some concerns and prejudices are maintained towards them, at least by the vast majority of people. Greyfort still could be one of the most openminded places, due to many circumstances.
I like these theories about the Captain! Building on them, he’s greeting the carriage, but not leading the dignitaries to their destination. Rather, he’s attending to the Help and the horses. Seems like something you assign to the FNG – or to someone who’s on Crap Detail.
My pet theory is he’s in the doghouse (or the horsehouse). And that maybe he’s a Captain because Dadums bought his commission.
t!
t!, what is “FNG?” I thought of “First New Guy,” but that doesn’t exactly fit.
Oh, dude, I KNOW you Googled it.
If you even needed to.
t!
Well, you got the N and the G, but you need to use a different word for the F….
Oh man, am I blushing! I should’ve gotten that, I should have!
Excuse me, folks, I’m going to have to start reeducating myself. First up, listening to George Carlin and Lenny Bruce.

Japanese-American Goro Suzuki served in WW2 – for the United States.
After the war, he wasn’t going to get any work as a Japanese entertainer. So he billed himself as "The Chinese Bing Crosby" – because he figured people wouldn’t be able to tell he was Japanese just by looking at him. (And he was routinely proven right.)
He also changed his name, to Jack Soo.

It’s amazing how little fashions changed in the 100 or so years between the Restoration of the Monarchy in Great Britain and the formal end of the American War of Independence. Since the haut-couture of the YAFGC currently reflects that period (particularly the 18th century part, if the hats are anything to go by) one wonders how near or far they are from that world’s version of the Scientific Revolution at one end of the timescale and the Industrial Revolution at the other.
The shading is coming along nicely, I find. The experiments of the past few episodes are paying off. I like it!

Ah, then I will still treat her like shit because I’m a royal butler and think I’m much better than just a driver.
Just saying XD
Tardiness smardiness! The comic looks so alive with shadows giving it a lovely sultry feeling.
Nice snow!
